Capital Flyers edge Bartercard Taranaki Thunder in WBC

1429160515994The Capital Flyers moved alongside Waikato Wizards at the top of the New Zealand Women’s Basketball Championship on Friday.

The Flyers entertained the Bartercard Taranaki Thunder at the TSB Bank Arena and came away with a hard fought 80-73 victory.

The Thunder made the slightly better start edging out to an early 11-8 lead although that advantage had been erased by quarter time as the Flyers finished the first period just ahead 17-16.

The margin was still a single point in favour of the hosts at half time, 40-39.

Taranaki had the better of the third quarter and led by Zoe Kensington and Rebekah Trethewey were still ahead, 67-66, entering the final five minutes of the game.

However, powered by a dominant performance from Beks van Kuyk (24ts/19rebs), the hosts dominated the closing moments to record their fifth win of the season in an exciting encounter that saw the lead change hands 14 times.

Capital Flyers 80 – Van Kuyk 24/19, Shanee Kiriau 11, Te Amo Amaru-Tibble 10, Jessica Slade 6/10.

Taranaki Thunder 73 – Kensington 20, Toni Schrader 15, Trethewey 12/15, Vanessa McCarthy 12.
