Adams, Abercrombie, Fotu and Penney all in the News

images-1There were three major pieces of news concerning Kiwi players overseas last week.

Firstly Steven Adams and the Oklahoma City Thunder failed to make the NBA play-offs.

Secondly Kirk Penney, Isaac Fotu and their respective teams faced off for bragging rights in the Spanish League and thirdly Tom Abercrombie decided to take up a short-term overseas contract for the remainder of the European season.

Despite defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 138-113 in their final regular season game OKC missed the NBA play-offs for the first time in six seasons. Steven Adams scored 7 points and accumulated 4 rebounds against the Timberwolves.

It is hoped that the early finish to the season may result in Adams making a highly anticipated appearance for the Tall Blacks.

In his second season in the NBA Adams averaged 7.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. These numbers compare very favourably with his rookie season when he averaged 3.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 0.7 blocks per game.

La Bruixa d’Or Manresa entertained Sevilla in the Spanish League or put another way Kirk Penney visited Isaac Fotu’s house.

Both teams entered the contest with identical 8-20 records but it was KP and Sevilla who came away with the win, 78-72.

Fotu did have the consolation of being the game’s highest scorer. His season high 22 points haul was achieved at a very efficient 7 from 11 shooting from the floor including 3 from 5 triples.

Despite playing 21 minutes Penney was a little more subdued, contributing 5pts/1reb/2assists.

The win lifts Sevilla a place above Manresa on the Liga Endesa table.

Sitting one place above Sevilla are the Gipuzkoa team who slipped to their fifth straight loss at home to bottom of the table Fuenlabrada.

Tom Abercrombie has signed for Gipuzkoa but only played for three minutes as he had barely been in the club’s San Sebastian base for a week and only attended a handful of training sessions.

Gipukoa were defeated 86-74 in overtime after the scores had been locked at 70 apiece after regulation time.

Serbian club Mega Leks is currently touring Greece and Bulgaria for friendly fixtures as the Serbian League takes a break. Unfortunately Corey Webster was unable to play at the weekend due to illness.
