New Zealand U18’s record two wins on day two of Australian Champs

The New Zealand teams enjoyed a successful second day at the Australian State Championships in Canberra on Friday.

The Under 18 Women (2-0) backed up their first day victory with a solid 75-62 win against Western Australia Metro. The Kiwis raced out to a 22-13 first quarter advantage and were never headed thereafter. WA mounted a comeback to close within four points late in the third quarter but a 22-13 closing stanza sealed the win.

New Plymouth’s Connie Poletti was terrific contributing 22 points and 16 rebounds. She was helped greatly by Taranaki colleague Kayla Manuirirangi (20pts), Wellingtonian Tegan Graham (17pts) and Tauranga’s Kelcy Ballantyne (9pts).

The Under 18 Men (2-1) had lost their opening game on Thursday by just two points. They bounced back late on day one predictably crushing ACT 100-59 and followed that up with a convincing 84-66 win over Queensland South on Friday.

Once again Harbour’s Matt Freeman (11pts/16 rebound) and Counties centre Sioeli Valangina (17pts/8 rebounds) were dominant. All ten players made scoring contributions for the second game running, Nikau McCullough (Waikato), 14 points and Joe Cook-Green (Otago,) 10 points the other double digit contributors.
