The Fotu’s have something special going on

image

At some stage in mid 2018 Daniel Fotu will head to San Francisco to link up with the players and coaching staff at St Mary’s College.

The St Mary’s play in the NCAA Division 1 West Coast Conference and the Rangitoto College senior this week signed a letter of intent to suit up for the Randy Bennett coached Gaels for the 2018-19 season and beyond.

There is nothing new of course about Kiwi’s heading to college in the States, after all over thirty young New Zealand players are at Division 1 universities heading into the new season that begins at the end of October.

However what may be unique is that three siblings from the same family have gained basketball scholarships to the USA.

The first Fotu to dip his toes in the US was Isaac who headed to the University of Hawaii in 2012 playing two seasons with the Warriors before turning pro.

The 23-year-old Tall Black regular has recently signed with leading German club Ratiopharm Ulm for the 2017-18 European season. The power forward has spent the last three seasons playing in Spain firstly for La Bruixa d’Or Manresa and for the past two seasons CAI Zaragoza.

Sister Gabriella (Ella) had a less than happy time at Boise State in 2015-16 but enjoyed a successful 2016-17 campaign at Hawaii Pacific. The 21-year-old guard averaged 7.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists last season for the Sharks earning an honourable mention in the All-PacWest Conference. Ella scored a season high 19 points at Notre Dame de Namur in January.

ella fotu

18 year-old Daniel, was a member of the Junior Tall Blacks team that recorded an historic win against Australia at the 2016 Oceania Championships in Fiji last December. Dan averaged 7.5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists in the tournament but injury ruled him out of the subsequent 2017 U19 World Cup in Cairo last July

All three Fotu’s have attended Rangitoto College on Auckland’s north shore. A school that has produced, in addition to Isaac, full internationals Penina Davidson, Brooke Blair, Tai Wynyard and most famously Sean Marks.

Dan already has two Schick New Zealand Secondary Schools National Championships winner’s medals to his name and heads to Palmerston North next week hoping to make it a trifecta.

Neither Ella nor Isaac enjoyed the thrill of winning a Secondary Schools championship but both picked up national titles playing for North Harbour. In fact the pair received the unusual distinction of claiming the MVP title at the same tournament – the Under 23 National Championships in Tauranga in 2013. Ella led Harbour to the Women’s title against Waikato and Isaac the men’s as they defeated Counties Manukau to claim gold.

All three have turned out for Harbour whenever possible, with Ella giving up part of her recent summer break from Hawaii to play for Harbour Breeze in the Women’s Basketball Championship. She made an immediate impact on her return averaging a team high 18 points per game as the Breeze clinched the Plate title in Christchurch back in July.

Perhaps basketball in New Zealand can bottle the genetics of the Fotu seniors Manu and Jenny because whatever they have seems to be a potent potion.

Oh, and the Fotu’s may not be finished yet – 13 year old Jacob, a budding hoopster, is in year 9 at Rangitoto – watch this space.

Mike Karena Remains in Spain

mike-karena2

Canterbury Rams centre Mike Karena has become the third New Zealand player to join a new club in Europe for the 2017-18 season.

Karena has signed on with Actel Forca Lleida in the Spanish LEB Gold Division. This is a step up for Karena who last season averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds per game for ISB Sammic in the LEB Silver Division.

The LEB Gold Division is the Spanish second tier competition nestling under Liga Endesa the competition Isaac Fotu played in for the past three seasons. Liga Endesa is widely regarded as the strongest club competition outside the NBA.

Fotu has of course moved to Germany and signed for Ratiopharm Ulm and Corey Webster, after initially signing for Perth Wildcats, has joined Israeli club Ironi Nahariya.

It is anticipated that Tai Webster, recently graduated from the University of Nebraska, will become the fourth Tall Black to play in Europe during the upcoming season.

Fotu won’t be seen in Zaragoza colours next season

As expected Isaac Fotu has parted ways with Spanish club Zaragoza and signed with Ratiopharm Ulm in the German Bundesliga for the next two seasons.

Currently enjoying a reasonable break from the game, after being excused Tall Blacks duty during the current international campaign, Fotu will link up with Ulm after spending the past three seasons in Spain.

After leaving the University of Hawaii in November 2014 Fotu was snapped up by Zaragoza but initially loaned out to La Bruixa d’Or Manresa for the remainder of the 2014-15 Liga Endesa season.

Returning to Zaragoza the following season the former Rangitoto College standout averaged 7.7 points and 4.4 rebounds in League action across 34 games. In addition he played 18 Eurocup games averaging 9.1 points per outing.

Last season the power forward averaged 9.1 points per game in 32 games for Zaragoza.

His three seasons in Spain have largely involved fighting relegation battles but the prospects are brighter in Germany as Ratiopharm went 30-2 last season to take out the Bundesliga regular season title before being eliminated in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

Ngatai again leads the NZ Select scoring

Abercrombie finally gets a run and is it adiós Zaragoza for Fotu?

thomas-abercrombie-370x277

Tom Abercrombie was given an overdue opportunity by Demir IBB as they went down 86-79 to Galatasaray at the weekend. Relishing just a second appearance in the last seven weeks the Breakers swingman responded with 13 points and 6 rebounds for the Turkish club.

Abercrombie landed all three of his three point attempts and shot 5 from 8 overall in just his seventh appearance for Demir.

Meanwhile in Spain could Isaac Fotu have played his last game for Zaragoza?

Zaragoza went down 90-85 at home to Estudiantes to conclude a disappointing season in the Spanish League. The club finished last but one on the 17 team ladder winning just nine of 32 games.

Fotu played in all 32 games averaging 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

With his three year contract with Zaragoza now expired it will be interesting to see if Fotu attracts offers from some of the bigger named Liga Endesa clubs.

Harmon a champion in Italy plus other fine performances from Tall Ferns overseas

Jillian Harmon led all scorers with 19 points as Le Mura Lucca beat arch rivals Familia Schio 65-50 on Sunday in front of their home fans to clinch the Italian Championship.

Lucca won the Grand Final series 3-1 clinching the title with a game to spare.

Having split the opening two games at Schio, Lucca capitalised on home court advantage at the weekend winning 74-68 on Friday (Harmon also scored 19 points in that game) before clinching a first championship on Sunday.

The win was sweet revenge for Lucca having lost the 2016 grand final series to the same opponents 3-0.

The Tall Ferns forward has had an outstanding season for Lucca, her second with the club and seventh overall in Italy, averaging 17.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

Her 17.2 points per game placed her third on the Italian League scoring list thi seasob.

Also enjoying great success are Sunbury Jets in the Big V League. The Melbourne club, pioted by Tall Ferns coach Kennedy Kereama, has made a perfect start to the season winning nine straight games. Tall Ferns centre Josie Stockill had a huge double double of 25 points (10/18FG, 4/4FT) and 11 rebounds as the Jets soared past second on the table Knox Raiders 63-48.

After recently getting married Toni Edmondson returned to the court for Perry Lakes Hawks against South West Slammers in the Western Australia State League (SBL). The Hawks were far too good for the Slammers winning 62-37 with Edmondson notching 6 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Like the Sunbury Jets the Hawks are unbeaten in the opening weeks of the season.

Also in WA the Perth Redbacks beat Rockingham Flames 62-37 with forward Lisa Wallbutton producing 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals as the Flames improved to 5-3 in sixth place on the ladder.

Back in Melbourne and Jess Bygate had 10 points and 7 rebounds, including 4 of the offensive variety, as Sandringham Sabres beat Melbourne Tigers 81-59 in the SEABL competition.

Micaela Cocks and Chevannah Paalvast made successful debuts in the Queensland Basketball League (QBL) for Mackay Meteorettes. The Meteorettes beat Rockhampton 80-61 and Gladstone 87-49 in a double-header weekend. Cocks averaged 17.5 points and Paalvast 11 points across the two games

It was not such good news for the Tall Blacks in Europe.

Isaac Fotu produced 7 points and 4 rebounds as Zaragoza went down 98-78 to Real Madrid in the Spanish Liga Endesa.

In Turkey Tom Abercrombie has played just one game for Demir IBB in the last six weeks. Signed as injury cover for an American import in March the Breakers swingman has played just six games for Demir who sit 12th on the sixteen team Turkish League ladder.

Fotu and Karena shine in Spain

CAI-SPI_Fotu contra

There was a double dose of Spanish delight at the weekend as both Isaac Fotu and Mike Karena landed wins.

Fotu came up with 11 points (3/3FG, 5/8FT) and 6 rebounds as Zaragoza beat fellow strugglers Joventut 71-69 to break a four game losing streak. The win pushed Zaragoza up to 14th on the 17-team Spanish League ladder – a timely win ahead of a bye this coming weekend.

Sammic ISB, the Spanish LEB Silver League leaders jumped back into the winners circle after slipping to a rare loss last week.

Karena led all scorers with 18 points (7/12FG) as Sammic improved to 22-7 with a low scoring 60-45 victory at fifth placed Avila. Sammic will wrap up the regular season title if they beat 10th placed Alcazar on Saturday.

Henare hunting for new Tall Blacks talent

Unknown

Basketball New Zealand is embarking on an exciting new era as the game embraces a move into Asia, with the Oceania region now part of a pathway to FIBA events via the Asian region.

Effective from 2017, all New Zealand teams will now be pitched into battle with the best in Asia as they strive to qualify for the likes of a FIBA World Cup or Olympic Games.
While that move brings many financial challenges for a sport, the national body and indeed the teams themselves are embracing the opportunity and in typical fashion, rolling up their sleeves at the thought of the challenges ahead.

Tall Blacks Head Coach Paul Henare loves the new challenge facing him and his team, which will include a first participation at the Asian Cup (Beirut in August) and then the new system of FIBA World Cup Qualifying Windows, with the team being brought together on four separate occasions each calendar year, five next year when you include the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

“Things that are quite exciting about the change include the chance to play guaranteed games at home throughout the year. We will play more internationals and gain that exposure through Asia. We will also get the opportunity to expand our overall Tall Blacks group because at different stages throughout the year we are going to call upon players who might not have played for us before. We will have players unavailable at different times, meaning we will go deeper into our playing group for some windows.”

Henare enjoyed a decorated career as a player and now as a coach, and knows what it means to play at home in the black singlet.

“It is such a rare thing to play for your country and pull the black jersey on in front of family at such close proximity, that is special. Look at someone like Mika Vukona who has probably played over 200 games for his country, but very few of them would have been at home, with his family having the chance to watch him play. This new system creates those opportunities and makes a playing career that much more special. And with those games being World Cup qualifiers, it makes them all the more significant.”

Mika Vukona

Henare is also in no doubt that the exposure of the famous black uniform and Tall Blacks culture at home will have benefits for the wider game.

“The Breakers have had an impact through sheer exposure and popularity, through having Kiwis playing in front of Kiwis on a regular basis they have been able to grow the game. To be able to do that with the national team is only going to help that growth, hopefully the spinoff is having more and more kids wanting to wear the black singlet and be a part of that. In that way, the increased exposure has to be good for our game.”

Henare is quick however to dismiss any thoughts that this will be an ‘easier’ pathway through to FIBA World Cup and Olympic Games tournaments. In fact the new Asia Zone means the Tall Blacks must be within the top seven teams in Asia to qualify for the FIBA World Cup. Before the change, the team needed to be in the top two within Oceania to qualify.

For the Olympics, New Zealand has been required to beat Australia. Now, under the new system, the best performing Oceania-team in the World Cup will directly qualify for the Olympics.
“Playing against Australia was a big challenge and a mountain to climb but by no means is this any less significant of a challenge, largely because of a different set of circumstances that we will face throughout that period.”

There are clear implications on player depth with the new Asian based system, with the Tall Blacks due to play in multiple FIBA qualifying windows throughout the year, meaning greater depth in the player pool will be required.
That places even greater importance on the NZ Select programme, following on from the successful tour to China in 2016, Henare will lead what is essentially a development team back to China and Taiwan in mid-June this year. Many players will be chosen from the NZ NBL, with Henare stressing more than ever before, the importance of that competition.

bj-anthony-r4-v-kings_1he1sar3tpswr128wdulwkga1y-300x350

BJ Anthony captained NZ Select in 2016

“The NBL is important for those players if they want to be part of the Tall Blacks programme, the NBL is in effect their place to trial and show their best form, even then we have to make selections based on what is best for the Tall Blacks programme in both the short and long term future, but the NBL is a significant part of the selection process.

“The effects of the Select Tours may take a while to come through, the purpose of that programme is to build a base so once the new Asian qualifying format kicks in, we have a wider group of players who have experience in our culture and on the international stage, it won’t be until then that we see the benefits.”
With that in mind, Henare is engaging on a busy NBL tour attending games and talking with teams.

“I have a schedule to get to as many games as I can. The introduction of live streaming and Maori TV coverage is fantastic, but it is important for me to get out and meet with coaches and watch players first hand to get a better feel for how they are going, and let them know I am watching closely.”
