Harmon’s performance the best of Kiwis overseas last week

DSC6140

Jillian Harmon

Jillian Harmon produced the top performance last week by a New Zealand international overseas.

Harmon scored 16 points for Le Mura Lucca (for the second successive game) as they beat Ragusa 62-46 in the Italian League. The Tall Ferns forward secured 5 rebounds for good measure.

Micaela Cocks scored 11 points and added 4 rebounds for Townsville Fire as they went down to Sydney University Flames 69-68. It was a poor weekend for the Fire losing both road games and slipping to 2-2 in the Australian WNBL.

It was a better weekend for Toni Edmondson as she produced a very useful stat line of 8 points (4/6FG), 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal as Perth Lynx improved to 3-2 for the season

Bubbling under last week:

Dion Prewster 9 points (3/7 3PG) in just 12 minutes as Sydney Kings defeat Illawarra Hawks.

Mike Karena had 6 points and 7 rebounds as Sammic ISB were thumped 71-41 by Albacete the Spanish Second Division competition. Sammic were previously unbeaten entering game four of the season but suffered a rude awakening in this one.

Isaac Fotu 7 points and 3 rebounds as Zaragoza return to winning ways defeating UCAM Murcia in Spanish Liga Endesa.

Jess Bygate 6 points and 3 rebounds as Melbourne Boomers beat Bendigo Spirit 71-67 and move to the top of the WNBL ladder

In other News:

Jarrod Kenny played just 3:44 as Perth Wildcats defeated United in Melbourne. The former Westlake standout left the court with a groin strain and could be out of action for 3-4 weeks. To compound Perth’s problems the Wildcats have also lost fellow point guard Damian Martin for a couple of weeks with a jaw fracture.

Krystal Leger-Walker

Pride of place this week goes to the New Zealand Women’s team at the 2016 FIBA 3×3 World Championships in China as we reflect on a busy week for Kiwis overseas.

The New Zealand team comprised of Georgia Agnew (Waikato), Breana Jones (Auckland/Counties) and the Tall Ferns pair of Deena Franklin (North Harbour) and Krystal Leger-Walker (Waikato).

The team boasted a 3-1 record in pool play and normally would expect to advance to play-off action but the Kiwis were denied by points differential as Netherlands (15.5 pts per game average) and Ukraine (14.5) marginally bettered NZ (14.0) as all three teams finished with a 3-1 record in Pool A. Unfortunately New Zealand missed out on quarter-final action.

Overall this was a fine effort by the New Zealand team to perform strongly at a World Championship event. The team was seeded 16th of the 20 participating nations and defeated three higher ranked teams before being squeezed out by a three points differential.

Franklin (26 points) and Agnew (24 points) both featured in the top 20 scorers in the tournament. There was a degree of compensation for Agnew, who has just returned to NZ after four years at Utah Valley University, as she took the bronze medal in the Skills Contest at the tournament.

The second best performance belonged to Isaac Fotu, the power forward scoring a highly efficient 16 points (8/11FG) to go with 8 rebounds. His effort couldn’t prevent Zaragoza slipping to a third Spanish League defeat in four outings as they lost 87-84 to Sevilla.

Coming in at number three was Jillian Harmon. The Tall Ferns forward scored 16 points for Le Mura Lucca who were beaten 69-68 by Napoli in the Italian League.

Mike Karena, on the back of a perfect shooting night, claimed fourth spot. The 2016 Tall Blacks rookie notched 10 points (5/5FG), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block as Sammic ISB made it three from three in the Spanish Second Division competition. Sammic beat Navarro 63-56.

Fifth was Jess Bygate who had a nice double of 8 points and 8 rebounds in a starting role for Melbourne Boomers on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Boomers and Bygate they were outscored 25-17 in the fourth to go down 88-85 to Perth Lynx in a tight WNBL encounter.

Rounding out the top six was Jarrod Kenny. He scored 9 points including the go ahead triple in the fourth quarter for Perth Wildcats as they held off the Breakers in the Perth Arena on Friday night.

Also worthy of mention are the Cook Islands women’s team and the New Zealand Men’s team that also competed at the 3×3 World Champs. Both teams exited after pool play with a 0-4 record but the collective 8 losses were all against higher ranked teams.

Any players attending a FIBA World Championship event should be congratulated on a rare achievement regardless of the results.

The North Harbour pair of Rory Fannon and Karl Noyer plus Nick Fee and Hamish Sheridan represented New Zealand Men from Waikato. Noyer led the NZ scoring with 20 points.

The quartet of Johaana Bates, Adoniah Lewis, Janet Main and Terai Sadler, familiar names in NZ women’s basketball circles, made up the Cook Islands team.

Bubbling under last week:

Micaela Cocks and Chevannah Paalvast each scored 6 points as Townsville Fire thumped Adelaide Lightning 85-56. Jordan Hunter made it a half dozen trifecta for the Kiwis by landing 6 points for Adelaide as they struggled to compete with the WNBL defending champs.

Toni Edmondson had 4 rebounds and a team high 6 assists for Perth Lynx but it wasn’t a shooting performance to remember for the Cantabrian. The Lynx went down 94-74 at Dandenong with Edmondson a cold 1 from 10 from the field managing just 3 points.

Dion Prewster made his first appearance of the season for the Sydney Kings scoring a couple of points as the Kings defeated Illawarra Hawks 88-84 to hand Andrew Gaze his first W as head coach of Sydney.

Fotu shines in mixed bag for Tall Blacks abroad

Issac-Fotu-1200

Over in Europe there are just two players flying the flag for New Zealand and both are playing in Spain. Isaac Fotu is back for a second season at Zaragoza and Mike Karena is suiting up for Sammic ISB in the Spanish second tier competition.

Fotu and Zaragoza had a double header over the weekend. On Sunday, despite a team high 22 points (8/12FG) and 7 rebounds from the Tall Blacks forward Zaragoza suffered a second consecutive home defeat going down 75-69 to Bilbao.

48 hours earlier Fotu had 16 points and 8 rebounds in Zaragoza’s 80-71 victory at Unicaja. He slotted home all 7 of his free throws to go along with 3 from 7 from the field.

Zaragoza are now 1-2 this season

Karena helped his club Sammic to a 2-0 start to the season as they beat Tarragona 63-60 in overtime. Karena secured 6 rebounds to go with 6 points in the W.

In Australia it was partially a round of inactivity for the Kiwi’s in the opening round of the NBL season.

Reuben Te Rangi missed Brisbane Bullets outstanding start to the season due to injury. The Bullets, under former Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis, are 2-0 and top of the table after toppling defending champs Perth Wildcats at home on Thursday and Sydney Kings on Saturday.

Dion Prewster was also confined to bench warming duties by the Kings.

I need to give a shout out to Rosmini College old boy Tohi Smith-Milner. In his second season as a Development Player at Melbourne United Smith-Milne logged 5 minutes on Sunday as Melbourne stuttered to a second successive defeat going down 89-79 at home against Adelaide. The power forward notched a solitary rebound in that time but just getting on court in such a star-studded lineup is a notable achievement.

One man who did see plenty of action was Jarrod Kenny. The Perth Wildcats guard is back to full fitness after a shoulder injury kept him out of the Tall Blacks campaign earlier in the year. Kenny had 5 points and 3 assists in the loss in Brisbane on Thursday and a couple of points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists as Perth escaped from the clutches of a second defeat with an overtime victory against Cairns Taipans 48 hours later in Perth.

Over 12,000 fans packed Perth Arena to see the Wildcats tie the game with 0.8 seconds remaining before dominating the extra period to win 84-74.

2001-2002 Tall Blacks flash back

tallblacks2001-15t1mdf

It certainly doesn’t seem 15 years ago that the Tall Blacks sealed an historic victory against the Australian Boomers to win the FIBA Oceania Championships and book a passage to the 2002 World Championships.

The Tall Blacks won the first fixture of the three game series in Wellington 85-78 but when the second game was lost  81-79 in overtime, the following day, at Mystery Creek many felt the hosts had lost their chanced to progress.

However a third game in as many days went the way of the Kiwis 89-78 in front of a raucous crowd at North Shore Events Centre and history was made. The Tall Blacks led 70-67 at three-quarter time and turned the defensive screws in the final period keeping the Boomers to just 11 points.

Aussie coach Phil Smythe is probably still having nightmares about game three but for all associated with New Zealand basketball the series and that result on September 23rd, 2001 will stay long in the memory.

The Tall Blacks team reads like a who’s who of New Zealand Basketball from the past couple of decades with a good number likely to feature if selecting an All-Time Tall Blacks team (and coaching combo).

Dickel, Jones and Cameron would be guaranteed spots with Boucher and Henare both coming into the reckoning as role players from the 2001 group. Sean Marks from the World Champs squad would compliment Pero nicely in the front court.

The New Zealand team that defeated Australia;

Bygate and Sunbury have title within their grasp

1465259420732

Jess Bygate and the Sunbury Jets have one hand on the Big V Division 1 Championship trophy after a resounding 62-41 victory against Geelong Supercats in game one of a best of three grand final series

The Kennedy Kereama coached Jets took the 90 kilometre trip south to Geelong on Saturday in their stride winning the first quarter 19-9 then reaching the half time break ahead 31-16.

Bygate, after a 21 points haul in the semi-final last week, had a much quieter evening recording 4 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

The two teams meet again in Sunbury next Saturday for game two. Game three, unlikely to be needed, is also scheduled to be in Sunbury the following day.

After being trounced last week Toni Edmondson and the Perry Lakes Hawks had the satisfaction of taking their best of three semi-final series to a deciding game in the Western Australian State League.

The Hawks were walloped 80-50 by Joondalup Wolves in game one but struck back in game two to win 60-56 on their home court on Saturday.

Edmondson contributed a double double of 10 points and a dozen rebounds in the win.

Game three on Sunday, back at Joondalup, was a different story as the Wolves mauled the Hawks 74-49.

Edmondson was terrific at the defensive end snaring a game high 14 rebounds in addition to a couple of steals and a block. Unfortunately the Tall Ferns guard could only score five points on a night when the Perry Lakes offence could not get going.

With State League commitments now over Edmondson can focus on pre season training with Perth Lynx – the Australian WNBL season less than six weeks away.

The season is also over for former Tall Black Duane Bailey.

He and the Brisbane Spartans came unstuck against Nunawading Spectres in the SEABL Eastern Conference Preliminary Final on Saturday losing 80-68.

Bailey was one of three Brisbane players in double figures notching 16 points and 7 rebounds. Brisbane gave up a 30-16 first quarter lead and although they narrowed to within three points (58-55) at three-quarter time could not sustain the revival and can now plan for next season.

Former Breakers guard Shane McDonald scored 13 points for Nunawading who advance to the Conference Final.

Isaac Leto the latest guard off the Westlake production line

image1-2

In the past two years New Zealand basketball has witnessed the emergence of two young point guards on the international stage. Tai Webster shot to prominence at the 2014 FIBA World Championships in Spain and Shea Ili, after making his international debut in 2015 played a significant part in the recent Tall Blacks Olympic Qualifying campaign.

Just bubbling under but definitely on the Tall Blacks radar for the future is Isaac Letoa.

Similar to Webster and Ili, Letoa is extremely athletic, blessed with good foot speed and possesses the ability to attack the basket.

Like Webster, he also hails from the North Shore basketball factory otherwise known as Westlake Boys High School.

Letoa moved to Auckland from Wellington in 2013 and has been a member of the Westlake premier team for the past 3 years.

He has also been a member of the Breakers Academy for the same length of time.

SKYCITY Breakers assistant coach and head coach of the Academy Mike Fitchett is in no doubt what qualities Letoa has that set him apart from most young players in New Zealand.

“Isaac has great defensive ability, plays with intensity and has a terrific work ethic,” says Fitchett.

“He has the capacity to stay in front of quick ball handlers and demonstrates great commitment on defence which you don’t see from a lot of young players. He also has the ability to penetrate at the offensive end and his perimeter shooting is improving,” added Fitchett.

Last month he was one of three Kiwis invited to attend the prestigious adidas Nations tournament in Los Angeles.

Over four days 80 of the top under 18 players from around the world had the opportunity to hone their skills under the guidance of elite coaches. A mix of skill and development drills and scrimmages took place (July 29-Aug 1) culminating in the championship game being broadcast live on ESPNU.

Letoa, along with Sam Waardenburg (Rangitoto College) and Quinn Clinton (Christchurch Boys High School) received invitations from ex NBA player Randy Livingston coach of Team Asia Pacific to attend the camp.

Letoa started every game for the Asia Pacific team and relished the opportunity to test himself against elite young athletes from around the world, particularly the young American players.

“All the players were quick but you expect that and need to adapt your game,” said Letoa.

The Westlake team captain, who turned 18 the day after the camp, loved the experience and was happy with how he performed earning a starting spot in every game.

“I learnt that every possession is vital and every opportunity has to be taken. It was a crazy experience.”

Letoa once again had an opportunity to benchmark his skill set against international opponents last Saturday playing alongside Ili and Tai Wynyard for the SKYCITY Breakers against the visiting American team Athletes in Action.

AIA are made up of players in their early twenties that have recently graduated from American college programmes or are in their senior years.

Letoa produced a composed performance backing up Ili at point guard scoring 11 points in the 97-78 loss but demonstrated the qualities Fitchett talked about.

Fellow Breakers coach Judd Flavell who has helped oversee Letoa’s development for the last three years also believes the 18 year old has a very good basketball career in front of him.

“It is refreshing to see a young guard with good court vision and passing ability. He has a high basketball IQ and reads the game very well.”

“Isaac is a fine person, has good discipline and works hard, these are attributes that his parents (Fata and Paula) can take a lot of credit for.”

In the future Letoa wants to join the long list of ex Westlake High School and Breakers Academy players to have played for the Tall Blacks but right now his goals are clear.

“My ambition is to gain a basketball scholarship to attend university in the USA. I want to study product design but I will have to wait and see what transpires in terms of subject choice,” said Letoa.

He will wait until he finishes this academic year at Westlake before deciding which university to attend. Flavell and Fitchett believe he will have plenty of options.

Kiwis heading for play-off action in Australia

The major news out of Australia last week concerning New Zealand international players was that Chevannah Paalvast has extended her stay with the Townsville Fire for a further year.

Having secured a championship during her maiden season in the WNBL the 24-year-old Tall Fern will return to the Fire looking to establish herself as one of the competition’s premier lock-down defenders.

During limited minutes for the Fire last season, Paalvast showed glimpses of her international form.

“I’m extremely happy to have signed with the Fire once again,” Paalvast said.

“It’s great to be back playing with some amazing teammates and coaches and to be able to stay in this community.

“It’s a great place to play basketball,” added the former Waitakere player.

During the WNBL ‘off season’ Paalvast has remained in Townsville playing in the Queensland Basketball League where she is averaging 15.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists for Townsville Flames.

She didn’t quite match those numbers on Saturday although the Flames did take care of business beating Sunshine Coast Rip 74-68.

Paalvast added 4 assists to 6 points as the Flames head into their final regular season game holding equal second spot on the ladder with two other teams.

Over in Perth both Lisa Wallbutton and Toni Edmondson will be involved in State League quarter-final action next week.

Edmondson came extremely close to a rare triple double recording 16 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists as Perry Lakes Hawks downed Kalamunda Eastern Suns 94-72.

Wallbutton was also in fine form nabbing 14 points and 12 rebounds but Perth Redbacks went down 77-65 to Willetton Tigers.

The quarter-finals will be best of three affairs with Perry Lakes facing Mandurah Magic and the Redbacks up against Rockingham Flames.

In Melbourne the Sunbury Jets have earned themselves a week’s holiday!

The Kennedy Kereama coached Jets finished the Big V First Division regular season with an unblemished 20-0 record after two one sided victories at the weekend.

On Saturday it was top versus bottom and the outcome was predictable as the Jets crushed Craigieburn 101-47. It was a little closer on Sunday but the Jets still rumbled over Keilor Thunder 90-56.

Tall Ferns forward Jess Bygate had 10 points and 5 rebounds against Craigieburn and 5pts/7rebs against the Thunder.

The Jets now get to put their feet up and watch the teams placed 3-6 in the league play-off for semi-final spots at the weekend.

Duane Bailey appears to be finding fitness and form at the right time of the season in Brisbane. The former Tall Black scored 13 points and snared 8 rebounds as the Brisbane Spartans staged a come from behind 93-81 victory against Albury Wodonga Bandits after trailing 45-33 at half-time.

With two rounds to play in the SEABL regular season the Spartans boast a 14-7 record and have secured second place on the Eastern Division table ahead of the play-offs later in August.

Double double for Chevannah Paalvast

Overall it was a good weekend for the New Zealand international players based in Australia.

Duane Bailey, obviously making progress from the calf tear he recently suffered, logged 25 minutes for Brisbane Spartans in his fifth game since joining the club at the conclusion of the Southland Sharks season.

The Spartans won a high scoring affair 112-101 against Ballarat Miners in a SEABL Eastern Division tie. Bailey scored 11 points (5/7FG) and added 4 rebounds as the Spartans consolidated second place with a 12-7 record.

Tall Fern Chevannah Paalvast is also based in Queensland playing for Townsville Flames in the Queensland Basketball League.

The Flames split a double-header road trip beating Gladstone Power 88-78 on Friday but then got blown away by Rockhampton Cyclones, 106-91, on Saturday.

The Flames are fourth on the ladder with a 10-4 record.

Ironically Paalvast was relatively quiet in the win on Friday (4pts, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) but close to her best against the Cyclones breezing to a double double of 23 points (10/16FG) and 10 rebounds.

Former Tall Fern Charmian Mellars (nee Purcell) is still getting it done for Gladstone. She produced a team high 20 points plus 11 rebounds.

Lisa Wallbutton was also in good scoring touch for Perth Redbacks as they hammered South West Slammers 100-59 in the Western Australian State League on Saturday.

Wallbutton accumulated 16 points (6/11FG) and gathered 9 rebounds as the Redbacks squeezed back into the top eight with the win.

Sunbury Jets were without Jess Bygate for their visit to Latrobe City but the Kennedy Kereama coached outfit just rolled out another win to remain top of the Big V First Division. The Jets beat Latrobe 78-53 and have now won 17 straight and are yet to be beaten in the current campaign.

Duane Bailey struggling with a calf injuy

Over in Australia the State Leagues are in full swing and a number of New Zealand internationals are featuring strongly.

Duane Bailey participated in something of a SKYCITY Breakers reunion on Saturday in Melbourne.

The Brisbane Spartans duo of Bailey and coach CJ Bruton visited the Melbourne Tigers in a SEABL Eastern Division tie. Melbourne have former Breakers Rhys Carter and Darryl Corletto in their lineup.

The former Tall Black, playing just his fourth game for the Spartans only played the first 85 seconds as his team disposed of the Tigers 87-69 to remain second on the ladder with an 11-7 record. Bailey, recovering from a calf tear (ouch!), left the court early, only started in order to log enough appearances to be eligible for play-off action later in the season.

For the record Corletto (9 points) and Carter (7 points) shot a collective 6 from 24 from the field as the Tigers continue to struggle.

Tall Fern Chevannah Paalvast is playing in the Queensland Basketball League for Townsville Flames.

The Flames had a successful double header road trip at the weekend beating Gold Coast Rollers 105-80 on Friday and South West Metro Pirates 92-72 on Saturday.

Paalvast was in sparkling form on Saturday scoring a game high 29 points (10/20FG) to add to 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.

On Friday she had scored 16 points as the Flames improved to 9-3 for the season.

Further south the Kennedy Kereama coached Sunbury Jets improved their record to 16-0 at the top of the Victorian Big V First Division.

Sunbury soared away from Chelsea Gulls winning 93-47 with Tall Fern forward Jess Bygate notching a double double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Over in the State League in Western Australia Lisa Wallbutton is suiting for Perth Redbacks. The Redbacks are currently seventh, just inside the top eight play-off bracket but slipped to a disappointing 88-79 loss to eleventh placed Lakeside Lightning on Saturday.

Wallbutton had 5points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 3steals and 2blocks as the Redbacks slip to a 9 win-9 loss record.

After a double header last weekend Toni Edmondson and her Perry Lakes Hawks side were without a fixture at the weekend. Edmonson is averaging 16 points per game for the Hawks who are sitting fourth on the SBL ladder with a 12-7 record.

Fotu’s Zaragoza win in bizarre circumstances

CAI-SPI_Fotu contra

Isaac Fotu

On Sunday Rob Loe, Tom Abercrombie and Isaac Fotu were each involved in European fixtures for there respective clubs . For Fotu and Abercrombie it proved to be their last outing before linking up with the Tall Blacks.

Fotu’s Zaragoza club played its thirty fourth and final regular season game of the Spanish League season, finishing on a positive note by winning 73-72 in Bilbao in unlikely circumstances.

With time almost up Zaragoza’s Joan Sastre launched a desperate heave from inside his own half at the basket with his team two points down. As his shot reached it’s apex the full time hooter sounded, a fraction of a second later the ball entered the hoop via the backboard. Not only had Zaragoza snatched a one point win but they had also denied the hosts a play-off spot.

He will return to his club Zaragoza next season for the third term of his three-year contract but for now he heads back to Auckland for a few days before linking with the Tall Blacks.

Tom Abercrombie is also Auckland bound after he and his club Pinar Karsiyaka were eliminated in the Turkish league play-offs.

It was looking good for Karsiyaka after it won the opening game of the quarter-final series in Istanbul with a 74-67 victory against Galatasaray last Wednesday.

The victory appeared to have set Karsiyaka up for an upset win in the best of three series. Unfortunately they missed a golden opportunity to progress by losing at home 65-62 in game two fourty eight hours later.

Galatasaray won the deciding game on Sunday decisively. They took the opening period 22-17 going on to win every quarter to take the game 77-62 and the tie 2-1.

Tom Abercrombie scored double figures in the first two fixtures (11 points followed by 12) and ended with 7 points in the third and decisive game.

In Belgium Rob Loe is keeping the Kiwi flag flying in Europe but only just.

Following Limburg United’s 78-64 loss against Oostende on Sunday the best of five Scooore League semi- final series stands 2-1 in favour of Oostende.

Limburg took game two 89-83 after being thrashed 91-62 in the opening exchange.

Loe nailed 10 points, 4 rebounds and three blocks in game two after a more subdued 3 points and 3 rebounds in the first game. His contribution in game three was limited to 4 points and 3 rebounds after getting into foul trouble, pinged four times in just 12 minutes.

The fourth game is on Wednesday with a fifth, if required, scheduled for next Saturday.

Fotu has fond memories of his visits to Bilbao as it is the city where he came of age as an international player displaying outstanding form for the Tall Blacks at the 2014 FIBA World Cup averaging 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
