In Round 6 of the Auckland Secondary Schools Boy’s Premier League the only unbeaten team, Rangitoto College, had that record expunged going down 79-77 at St Kentigern College.

Rosmini College defeated Westlake in front of a big crowd at Eventfinda Stadium and there were also wins for Auckland Grammar and Mt Albert Grammar.

St Kentigern College beat Rangitoto College 79-77 as the top two teams in the competition went head to head in east Auckland on Friday.

St Kent’s point guard Alex McNaught (24 points) converted an acrobatic layup to edge his team ahead with 45 seconds to play. Rangitoto created an opportunity for Zach Riley to put up a potential game winner on the buzzer but his three-pointer fell just short – Riley was outstanding compiling a Premier career best 36 points.

The first quarter favoured the visitors as Riley and Harry Payne (20 points) went to work but St Kent’s fought back in the second via McNaught and Levic Kerr (22 points) to close within two points at half-time (45-43).

Heading into the fourth it was just a one point game, 59-58, as the two teams went toe to toe. St Kent’s forward Levic Kerr was proving a handful on the offensive boards and he made 8 of his 22 points in the fourth.

Payne and Riley shared 14 points in the final frame and Tautoko Wynyard chipped in with some handy points but Elliot Watson and Kerr held firm before McNaught’s athletic play sealed the win.

St Kentigern 79– A McNaught 24, L Kerr 22, K Evans 9, M Gan 9, E Watson 8

Rangitoto 77– Z Riley 36, H Payne 20, P Leopolu 10

In front of a vibrant 1,000+ crowd at Eventfinda Stadium Rosmini College edged local neighbours Westlake Boys 86-80.

Josh Kooiman made a couple of early triples but they were cancelled out by similar efforts from Sean Murphy (20 points) and Tyler Martin to help Rosmini to a 19-15 quarter-time lead.

That lead increased to 43-36 at the main break as Jayden Boucher and Marvin Williams-Dunn (22 points) featured strongly in the second.

Westlake fought back in the third as Dylan Wilkie, Sam Mennenga and Kooiman all hit from deep to lock the scores up at three-quarter time (63-63).

Wilkie, Jett Thompson and Mennenga, who scored a game high 25 points, had the Westlake fans roaring as they controlled the early stages of the fourth frame and when Kooiman landed a prayer as the shot clock expired a Lake victory looked a strong possibility.

However after a brace of buckets from both Boucher and Thomas Morgan, Terence Abdon made a crucial long three to put Rosmini in the ascendancy.

Jason Mitef sealed the win in a game that was a fine advertisement for high school basketball.

Westlake 80– S Mennenga 25, D Wilkie 18, J Thompson 14, J Kooiman 14

Rosmini 86– M Williams-Dunn 22, S Murphy 20, T Abdon 15,  J Boucher 13

Daniel Boyd scored a Premier career best 33 points as Auckland Grammar outscored Liston College 54-20 in the second half to canter to a 90-47 victory.

Boyd had 18 points in the opening half and with Jaga Mete (19 points) contributing 9points Grammar were 37-27 ahead at the interval – Kiani Saxon and Preston Karatau helped keep Liston in touch.

Shawn Hickey (13 points) and Victor Ola’aiga posted points for Liston in the third but they were outscored 29-14 in the frame as Connor Ngan, Luka Vea and Boyd took control.

Grammar cruised through the closing ten minutes to ensure a third win of the season.

Liston 47– S Hickey 13, K Saxon 7, P Karatau 6

AGS 91– D Boyd 33, J Mete 19, C Ngan 15, L Vea 8

A dominant display on the boards from Nate Wilson helped Mt Albert Grammar to their first win of the season. Wilson added 20 points to a colossal 27 rebounds as MAGS beat Macleans College 80-56.

It was all MAGS in the opening quarter as they strode to a 19-11 lead. Tyson Kempton had 8 first half points for Macleans but MAGS steadily built there advantage through Josh Leger (a game high 21 points) and Phil Mengistie.

MAGS welcomed back Sataan Tawera after injury and the point guard helped MAGS control proceedings as they won every quarter to kick start their season.

Jesse Manuel top scored for Macleans with 9 points – Macleans head to Rangitoto College on Monday searching for their first win whilst MAGS take on Liston College in a crucial game.

Macleans 56– J Manuel 9, T Kempton 8, H Hanson 8

MAGS 80– J Leger 21, N Wilson 20, P Mengistie 14, S Tawera 9

Rangitoto edge Carmel in high scoring encounter

Rangi Girls 2019

In a fast paced entertaining Auckland Secondary Schools Premier League game played on Wednesday night Rangitoto College defeated Carmel College 89-84.

Tayla Dalton, back from her heroics in Mongolia with the New Zealand team that claimed silver at the FIBA U18 3×3 World Cup, scored 44 points for Carmel.  However a more balanced scoring effort from Rangitoto, with five players in double figures, eased them to their fourth win of the season.

Early on it was Carmel that started the stronger building a 14-9 advantage although that was turned into a 21-17 lead in favour of Rangi by quarter time courtesy of a pair of threes from Hannah Wentworth.

The second quarter belonged to the hosts as Aroha Riley and Ella Moore dropped a bunch of triples to take Rangitoto to a 50-33 lead at the main break.

Whatever Carmel coach Gareth Teahan said to his team in the locker room at half-time worked a treat as they almost wiped out the entire 17-point deficit in the ensuing ten minutes.

Dalton did most the damage but Emily Broomfield, Estelle Davidson and Qaizden Stephano were all significant contributors in a revival that saw them enter the final ten minutes just six points adrift (66-62).

Moore made her third triple of the game to open the fourth quarter but Dalton replied with an And-1 play. Young Rangi guard Kellie Tawhiao reeled off 8 straight points as they led 79-68 with 6 minutes to play.

Broomfield and Davidson scored the next six points before the two leading scorers in the game, Dalton and Aroha Riley, exchanged scores from beyond the three-point arc.

The impressive Moneesha Barrett put Rangi 89-78 to the good with just under two minutes to play and although Carmel scored the last six points of the contest it wasn’t quite enough to steal the win.

Next up for Carmel is a game against Westlake Girls with that fixture to be played at Eventfinda Stadium (North Shore Events Centre) on Friday. Josh Davis and his charges will  take on Massey High on the same evening with the two teams boasting identical 4-1 records.

Rangitoto 89– A Riley 22, K Tawhiao 20, H Wentworth 16, E Moore 13, M Barrett 11

Carmel 84– T Dalton 44, E Broomfield 15, E Davidson 11, Q Stephano 8

Massey High defeat Auckland Girls Grammar

Massey High bench

Westlake Girls High School and Massey High School reinforced their Auckland Secondary Schools Premier League top four spots with emphatic Round 5 wins on Friday.

Massey, led by Ramona Fuaivaa (23 points) and Alyesha Schuster (20 points) proved too strong for Auckland Girls Grammar winning 103-56.

An opening quarter lead of 18-9 in favour of the visitors was extended to 43-21 at the break Imogene Noble and Leah Patuwairua did most of the scoring for AGGS but contributions across the board from Massey were the order of the day.

Noble, the game’s highest scorer with 26 points, scored 11 of those in the third quarter but Kharylle Ruiz scored 8 points in the frame as Massey steadily built their lead.

Maxine Seuravatele and Hina Devery chipped in with points for AGGS but Massey had too many weapons and cruised to a fourth win of the season. Allyah Leusogi-Ape, Yzabelle Tevao and Tahlya Waikiki were the other Massey players in double figures.

AGGS 56– I Noble 26, L Patuwairua 12, H Devery 4, M Seuravatele 4

Massey 103– R Fuaivaa 23, A Schuster 20, A Leusogi-Ape 13, K Ruiz 12, Y Tevao 12, T Waikiki 11

Westlake Girls High beat Mt Albert Grammar103-44 in the only other game played on Friday. Jordyn Maddix was on fire from the three-point line draining eight triples. Unfortunately we don’t have any further details of the game.

Botany Downs forfeited their game for the second time this season handing league leaders St Mary’s the two competition points.

The Rangitoto College versus Carmel College fixture has been postponed until Wednesday June 12th.

In other news Tayla Dalton has been in Mongolia with the New Zealand team that played extremely well to win silver at the FIBA U18 3×3 World Cup. Former MAGS standout Sharne Pupuke-Robati was also in the team alongside Chaerlisse Leger-Walker and Ashlee Strawbridge

Rangitoto beat Rosmini in double OT

Zach riley

Zach Riley

Rangitoto College are the outright leaders of the Auckland Secondary Schools Boy’s Premier League. Rangitoto beat Rosmini College in double overtime and with St Kentigern losing at Auckland Grammar the ‘Boys from the Bays’ are the only unbeaten team after five rounds of competition.

The Rangi versus Rozza clash was a hugely entertaining game punctuated by extreme fluctuations of scoring form that was eventually decided after 49 minutes and 57.4 seconds of action.

With 2.6 seconds of play left in the second extra period young Rangitoto guard Zach Riley stepped to the free throw line with the scores locked at 99 points apiece. He calmly knocked down his first attempt and with so little time left on the clock intentionally missed the second. Dallas Clayton grabbed the offensive rebound for added security enabling him and his teammates to celebrate a fifth straight win.

Earlier Rosmini had made the better start as Marvin Williams-Dunn found his way to basket on multiple occasions to give the visitors a 24-18 first quarter lead. A fairly even second period ensued – Rosmini still ahead 41-32 at the interval.

The relatively sedate first half was followed by carnage in the third! Inspired by Harry Payne, Jared Thornton and Obadaiah Paea Rangitoto unleashed a 24-0 run , yes twenty-four points to zero, before a Terence Abdon three stopped the bleeding. Rangitoto amassed 33 points in the quarter with the afore mentioned trio sharing all but five of those points.

Reeling at the three-quarter mark with a 65-49 deficit Rosmini turned the game on its head at the start of the fourth. Rangi could hardly get the ball out of there own half as the defending champions, inspired by Jayden Boucher’s work, ramped up the defensive effort. They couldn’t quite match the second quarter run of Rangitoto but it was mighty close. 22-2 to be precise as Sean Murphy, Reihana Maxwell-Topia and Abdon capitalised on numerous Rangi turnovers to forge a 71-67 lead.

The regular time drama hadn’t finished. Murphy (32 points) knocked down his third triple of the period to tie the scores (77-77) inside the last two minutes and when Williams-Dunn converted a trademark slashing dive with 10 seconds to play a Rosmini win looked likely. However Payne had the last say – a composed close range finish from the Rangi captain tying the scores. Fouled in the act of shooting, the game’s leading scorer (33 points) saw his potential match winning free throw rim out.

The two teams traded baskets in the first overtime period, a Williams-Dunn triple cancelling out a similar effort from Ethan Skelton –  the raucous crowd given an extra five minutes entertainment with the score locked at 90 points each.

A Thornton tip-in was cancelled out by Maxwell-Topia and despite losing Williams-Dunn, Boucher and Murphy with five fouls apiece Rosmini led 99-97 with 45 seconds to play. However it was the impressive Riley that had the final say, scoring on the next play before landing the all important game winner.

Rangitoto 100– H Payne 33, Z Riley 27, O Paea 17, J Thornton 12, E Skelton 8

Rosmini 99– S Murphy 32, M Williams-Dunn 22, T Abdon 20, R Maxwell-Topia 17, J Boucher 8

Auckland Grammar unleashed a double-barrel assault, in the form of Jaga Mete and Connor Ngan, to inflict a first defeat of the season on St Kentigern College (93-79).

The heaviest shots were fired in the fourth quarter as Ngan released a barrage of threes (he had seven in the game with five landed in the final ten minutes) and Mete took his tally to 45 points with St Kent’s outscored 29-17 in the last period.

St Kent’s, after shading the first half 40-38 were very much in the hunt at the three- quarter mark trailing by a single point (63-62) with Kaslo Evans and Alex McNaught leading their effort.

Josh Child and Kaea Rangiehaeata scored early in the final frame for St Kent’s but once Ngan found his range from beyond the arc there was only one winner.

AGS 93– Jaga Mete 45, C Ngan 28, L Vea 7

St Kentigern 79– K Evans 24, A McNaught 17, M Gan 10, J Child 9, E Watson 7

Despite double-doubles from the forward duo of Josh Leger (23 points and 12 rebounds) and Nate Wilson (20 points and 15 rebounds) Mt Albert Grammar went down 89-63 to Westlake Boys on their home court.

The pair shared 14 first quarter points but 11 in the period from Dylan Wilkie edged Westlake ahead 20-18.

On the back of his MVP performance at the U19 National Championships in Dunedin earlier in the week Sam Mennenga got to work in the second. On his way to a game high 25 points he scored 11 points in the period as Westlake moved out to a 44-32 half-time lead.

Campbell Atkinson was prominent for Westlake after half-time and although Phil Mengistie dropped a triple for MAGS they still had a lot to do at the last break trailing 71-53.

Wilkie landed his fifth trey of the game and Reuben Natusch another for good measure as Westlake eased to a fourth win of the season and equal second on the table.

MAGS 63– J Leger 23/12r, N Wilson 20/15r, P Mengistie 7, M Aiono 6

Westlake 89– S Mennenga 25, D Wilkie 17, C Atkinson 12, J Kooiman 11

Harry Smith and Richard Jiang combined for 53 points for Macleans College but a more balanced scoring effort from Liston College propelled them to a 100-80 victory.

Smith had 11 points in the opening stanza but threes from Logan Hamilton, Ben Grant, Ryan Fabian and Desmond Helu gave Liston a 25-22 lead. The scores were tied by the interval (43-43) as Tyson Kempton had the last say of the half.

Preston Karatau (25 points) made three of his five triples in the third and with Helu making useful points Liston were 68-60 to the good at three-quarter time.

Sefa Prasad scored all his 12 points in the fourth as the hosts put their foot down (winning the period 32-20) to record a valuable second win of the season.

Liston 100– P Karatau 25, K Saxon 16, D Helu 15, S Prasad 12, S Hickey 11

Macleans 80– H Smith 28, R Jiang 25, K Reyes 7, T Kempton 6, R Dio 6

In other news Taine Murray is currently attending the Nike Asia Camp in Shenzen, China.

Who are the new Tall Ferns?

Ella fotu

Tall Ferns coach Guy Molloy has included five debutants in a 14-player squad for the tour to Japan and theWilliam Jones Cup defence inTaiwan in July.

Matangiroa Flavell, Ella Fotu, Esra McGoldrick, Amy West and Charlotte Whittaker have all been selected for the senior national team for the first time.

“This is an intentional strategy to build depth, increase competition for positions, and satisfy the increasing demands of FIBA for international basketball competition,” said Molloy.

“The team selected to tour Japan and Taiwan features a blend of senior players such as Toni Farnworth, emerging new team leaders such as Penina Davidson, and exciting young potentials.”

What do we know about the five debutants? For a start all five have spent time in the American college system after graduating from high school in NZ.

Ella Fotu probably has the most recognisable name amongst the quintet of newbies with brothers Dan and Isaac having already played for the Tall Blacks.

Ella, like her brothers and Tall Fern Penina Davidson, schooled at Rangitoto College before having a three-year career in the States. She attended Boise State initially before moving on to Hawaii Pacific where she won a PacWest Conference title with the Sharks in 2018. Currently she is playing with Harbour Breeze in the Women’s Basketball Championship (WBC).

D75_2677.JPG

Matangiroa Flavell is also a member of the Harbour Breeze. The 21-year old played representative basketball for Rotorua while at Western Heights High School. Post school she played Junior College ball at Midland College, Texas for two years. After graduating from Midland she moved on to Houston Baptist University for a season.

Coach Molloy says that, for the team to compete with the basketball giants in the top 10, New Zealand must develop players with natural height. With this in mind he has selected three teenage forwards for the trip.

Amy west (14)

Amy West (No 14)

Palmerston North Girls High alumna Amy West (195cm) has just completed her freshman year at Liberty University in Virginia playing 20 games for the Flames. She is currently averaging 8.7 points and 6.3 rebounds for North Canterbury Spirit in the WBC.

esra mcGoldrick

Also coming off a college freshman year is former Rangi Ruru standout Esra McGoldrick. The Cantabrian forward played 21 games for North Carolina State University last season where the Wolfpack finished the 2018-19 season ranked ninth on the USA Today Coaches Poll, after making the semi-finals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Tournament.

McGoldrick leads the WBC Division 2 scoring averaging 24 points per game for the North Canterbury Spirit.

charlotte whittaker

The youngest debutant is 18-year old Charlotte Whittaker out of St Andrew’s College, Christchurch. Whittaker, the leading scorer for the Junior Tall Ferns at the Asia Cup in India last year averaging 13.8 points per game, has spent the last six months at the University of Colorado where she was a redshirt freshman. Whittaker created a favourable impression when making her senior international debut for New Zealand Select against China B in 2016 at just 16 years of age.

Molloy says the tour ahead will see the team play possibly two games against Japan in Japan, before defending the William Jones Cup that New Zealand won in 2018.

“Our goal in 2019 is to make it to 2020! What I mean by that is we give ourselves a great shot of qualifying for the Olympics, for which the key event is in February 2020. To do this will be very difficult, but I am expecting our culture and style of play will hold us in good stead.”

Indeed, it will be difficult. Only 12 women’s teams will compete at the 2020 Olympics. To qualify, 16 teams will battle it out in four FIBA qualification tournaments in February 2020. To get there, the Tall Ferns need to go through a pre-qualifying Asia-Oceania tournament in November this year where eight teams will compete for four spots in the 2020 qualifiers. The future is looking bright and Coach Molloy believes great things can happen for New Zealand women’s basketball.

“Everyone can feel the momentum surge in basketball in New Zealand. As I toured the country in May, doing workshops and clinics, I was really impressed with the talent on display. It’s an exciting time to be involved and an exciting time to be a Tall Fern,” said Coach Molloy.

TALL FERNS TEAM:

  1. Stella Beck (Launceston Tornadoes/Townsville Fire)
  2. Tessa Boagni (Alloyfold Canterbury Wildcats)
  3. Micaela Cocks (Townsville Fire)
  4. Penina Davidson (Harbour Breeze/Adelaide Lightning)
  5. Toni Farnworth (Ringwood Hawks/Perth Lynx)
  6. Matanigiroa Flavell (Harbour Breeze)*
  7. Ella Fotu (Harbour Breeze)*

St Mary’s beat Westlake on the buzzer

The game of the round in the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Girl’s competition featured unbeaten teams Westlake Girls and St Mary’s College.

In a terrific game where the lead changed hands several times it looked as if Westlake would protect home court advantage leading 69-68 inside the final seconds. However possession was with St Mary’s and Leata Te-Nana Williams was entrusted with the last shot. Much to the delight of her teammates and the travelling St Mary’s fans she connected with a floater from the elbow on the buzzer to clinch a 70-69 win.

Earlier it was Westlake that established the early advantage (23-21) although St Mary’s had the better of the second stanza to lead 41-37 at the break. Westlake wing Emme Shearer led all scorers with 15 points in the half, Riana Matiseni not far behind with a dozen for St Mary’s.

Izzy Pugh made 10 points in the third as Westlake reclaimed the lead at the end of the frame (55-53).

It remained close in the fourth – Shearer and Makenzee Boucher made buckets, Matiseni and Zaaliyah Kalahi-Fulu replying for the visitors. Jess Moors appeared to have made the winning basket for Westlake but it was Te-Nana Williams that had the final say, the win meaning St Mary’s are the only unbeaten girl’s premier team.

Westlake 69 – E Shearer 23, I Pugh 16, J Maddix 11, J Moors 11

St Mary’s 70 – R Matiseni 17, Zaaliyah Kailahi-Fulu 14, K Leslie 13, S Te-Nana Williams 7

Tayla Dalton was named to the New Zealand team attending the FIBA U18 3×3 World Cup in Mongolia earlier in the week and she warmed up for the 23,000km round trip with 30 points as Carmel inflicted a 78-59 defeat on Mt Albert Grammar.

Carmel opened up with consecutive threes from Dalton and the Izzy’s, Cattermole and MacGregor, as they forged an 18-13 first period lead.

Monica Kelly  and Rikki Fiatau led the MAGS scoring but their chances were dented when Kelly picked up her fourth foul midway through the second quarter.

The hard working Emily Broomfield was providing good support for Dalton, the home team 35-20 to the good at half-time.

Dalton joined Kelly on four fouls early in the fourth and MAGS, sensing an opportunity to eat into the Carmel lead, scored six straight points via Danae Tait, Destiny Leef-Milner and Fiatau. However, led by Broomfield and young guards Marina Lough and MacGregor, Carmel held their ground to lead 57-34 with ten minutes to play.

Both coaching staff’s gave playing opportunity to their bench players in the final period as Carmel eased to a second win of the season.

Carmel 78– T Dalton 30, E Broomfield 16, Qaizden Stephano 9, I Macgregor 8

MAGS 59– M Kelly 15, R Fiatau 15, D Leef-Milner 6, Harmony Brown 6

Rangitoto College put on a 3-point shooting exhibition against Auckland Girls Grammar knocking down 21 shots from beyond the arc. Ella Moore (35 points) and Hannah Wentworth (30 points) landed eight and five threes respectively as a total of seven different players converted from the land of plenty.

Moneesha Barrett began the triple treat and with Wentworth landing four in the opening half the lead was a whopping 62-11 at half-time.

Imogene Noble and Sera Taea both contributed double figures for Grammar but they could do little to stop the Rangi onslaught as Kellie Tawhiao, and sisters Waiaaria and Aroha Riley joined Wentworth and Moore in double digit territory for the hosts.

Rangitoto 125– E Moore 35, H Wentworth 30, A Riley 18, K Tawhiao 12, W Riley 10

AGGS 43– I Noble 15, S Taei 14, L Patuwairua 8

Sophia Herewini scored 8 first quarter points for Botany Downs but Shauna Povey was in double figures at the quarter mark with her team a healthy 30-11 to the good.

The gap widened in the second period as Kharylle Ruiz and Alyesha Schuster carried Massey to a 62-16 lead.

Sophia and Tiana Herewini scored 13 points and 9 points respectively for Botany in the second half but multiple Massey players made double figure contributions – Shazaleah Henry scoring the last six points of the game to round out the win

Top four all win in Boy’s Premier competition.

harry payne

Rangitoto captain Harry Payne

The Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Boy’s competition featured the bottom four teams against the top four in Round 4! The results went exclusively with form as Rangitoto College, St Kentigern College, Rosmini College and Westlake Boys all chalked up wins.

Once again Rangitoto College made a fast start on their home court – Harry Payne scoring nine early points against Auckland Grammar.

Grammar found it difficult to score early on taking almost four minutes to get on the board. Once underway Jaga Mete, named to the Junior Tall Blacks FIBA U19 World Cup bound squad this week, scored 8 straight points but they trailed 24-14 at the first break.

Rangitoto were very efficient in the second, 10 points between Ethan Mandeno and Liam Judd helping them to a 19-point lead by the half (43-22).

Threes from Connor Ngan and Daniel Boyd improved Grammar’s scoring production in the third but they were unable to put much of a dent in the host’s lead, winning the quarter by just one point, as Jared Thornton and Zach Riley regularly found routes to the hoop.

Grammar found it difficult to connect from range but Ngan righted that in the final frame making three of his five triples in the spell. However the more balanced Rangi scoring effort prevailed, the hosts recording a fourth straight win.

Rangitoto 84– J Thornton 14, Z Riley 14, H Payne 13, L Judd 13, E Mandeno 9

AGS 65– J Mete 20, C Ngan 17, Blake Manning 11, Ilasia Tela 9

Also with four consecutive wins are St Kentigern College after a 110-65 home win against Macleans College in the East Auckland derby on Friday.

St Kent’s took a firm grip of the contest in the opening ten minutes charging to a 32-14 lead as threes from Martin Gan, Kaea Rangihaeata, Shalom Broughton and Elliot Watson rained down.

Michael Barbaran had 18 of Macleans first 23 points and although Tyson Kempton dropped a triple the St Kent’s lead was 59-30 at the break.

Harry Smith found his scoring touch for Macleans in the third but St Kent’s were relentless as Levic Kerr, McNaught and Gan, on his way to a game high 24 points that included six made threes, piled on the points for the home side as they led 96-46 with a quarter to play.

Year 9 guard George Turner had the St Kent’s bench on their feet as he dropped three triples to round out the ‘Feast in the East’.

St Kentigern 110– M Gan 24, S Broughton 20, L Kerr 15, A McNaught 15, G Turner 9

Macleans 65– M Barbaran 23, H Smith 15, T Kempton 10

Rosmini College, in a frenetic start, jumped out to an early 11-0 lead at the Tom Gerrard Gymnasium before Dakota Stephens got Mt Albert Grammar on the board.

Sean Murphy scored seven points either side of the quarter time break and Taine Murray six as the hosts extended their lead. Phoenix Sorenson responded for the visitors but a Murray dunk, and threes from Tyler Martin and Jayden Boucher fuelled a 15-0 Rosmini run as they entered half-time with a 43-21 lead

Forwards Josh Leger and Nate Wilson made scores for MAGS in the third but Murphy, Murray and Terence Abdon extended the advantage in front of a third consecutive full house – the biggest ovation of the day accorded Matt Drury when the young forward made his first points in Premier basketball.

MAGS will be hoping point guard Sataan Tawera makes a speedy recovery from a fractured ankle as they look for their first win of the season.

Rosmini 82– T Murray 20, S Murphy 14, J Boucher 11, T Abdon 10,

MAGS 50– N Wilson 12, Dakota Stephens 10, Josh Leger 7

Sam Mennenga celebrated being named in the Junior Tall Blacks team for the upcoming FIBA U19 World Cup in Greece by scoring a game high 26 points as Westlake boys protected home territory with an 80-63 victory against Liston College.

Westlake were out to a 19-10 first quarter lead thanks to a brace of buckets apiece from Mennenga, Joe Wuthrich and Caton Silbiger.

An early second quarter three from Victor Ola’aiga and additional scores from Troy Baker and Shawn Hickey kept Macleans in the hunt although points late in the half from Liam Spencer kept Lake ahead 38-25 at the break.

Kiani Saxon and Ola’aiga led a strong Liston effort in the third as the visitors closed to within single figures (51-43) at the three-quarter mark.

Desmond Helu scored all of his 11 points in the final period as Liston fought desperately for a second win of the season but Mennenga matched that number and with Josh Kooiman, Silbiger and Dylan Wilkie making threes it was the hosts that emerged with the W.

St Mary’s come from behind to beat Carmel and remain unbeaten

Tayla Dalton

A quality game of Auckland Secondary Schools Girl’s Premier basketball at St Mary’s College on Monday night saw the hosts prevail 66-63 against Carmel College – a win that takes St Mary’s to equal top of the league standings alongside Westlake.

Carmel will rue a missed opportunity as, paced by 37 points from Tayla Dalton, they led for all but the last two minutes of the game.

Eight points from Emily Broomfield helped Carmel shade the opening period (16-14) and a similar number from Kataleena Leslie meant it was still a one possession game at half-time in favour of the visitors (31-28).

Zaaliyah Kailahi-Fulu, Alex Moore and Leata Te-Nana Williams kept the score moving for St Mary’s in the third quarter which was just as well as Dalton helped herself to 16 points in the frame to keep her team ahead 50-48 at the three-quarter mark.

Katie Linstrom, Isobel MacGregor and Broomfield aided Dalton with the scoring in the final period but Leslie, Kailahi-Fulu and Safena Te-Nana Williams scored the important points in the closing couple of minutes to secure a St Mary’s victory.

Carmel will look to bounce back to winning ways against Mt Albert Grammar on Friday whilst St Mary’s will travel to Westlake where the two unbeaten teams will go head to head.

St Mary’s 66– Z Kailahi-Fulu 15, K Leslie 12, A Moore 10, T Atiga 8, L Te-Nana Williams 8

AGGS get first win plus success for Rangitoto and Westlake

AGGS 2019

There were wins last Friday in the Auckland Secondary Schools Girls Premier Grade for Rangitoto College, Auckland Girls Grammar and Westlake Girls High.

Auckland Girls Grammar chalked up their first win of the season defeating Botany Downs 74-43.

Nine first quarter points from Sophia Herewini was countered by Leah Patuwairua – the AAGS lead was a slender 16-14 at the first break.

Grammar put their foot down in the second, three consecutive scores from Imogene Noble helping them to a 34-22 half-time lead.

Tiana Herewini and Jolie Tawhara picked up the Botany scoring effort in the third but six points apiece from Hina Devery and Patuwairua ensured Grammar had a game winning 57-39 lead at the three-quarter mark.

Fittingly Sera Taei, the game’s leading scorer with 19 points, scored the final basket of the game.

Botany Downs 43– T Herewini 14, S Herewini 10, J Tawhara 9

Auckland Girls Grammar 74– S Taei 19, L Patuwairua 18, I Noble 16, H Devery 8

Despite 22 points apiece from Rikki Fiatau and Monica Kelly, Mt Albert Grammar slipped to a third straight loss going down 112-69 at Rangitoto College.

Rangitoto were quick out the blocks racking up 30 first quarter points to establish a 14 points margin as Hannah Wentworth, Moneesha Barrett and Emily Blythe dropped triples.

Monica Kelly and Rikki Fiatau had ten points apiece in the first half for the visitors but there was carnage at the defensive end as Rangitoto had amassed 75 points at the interval, 36 points coming from beyond the arc – Ella Moore and Aroha Rogers contributing to the three-point barrage.

Not surprisingly the scoring pace eased in the second half, Rangi coach Josh Davis able to give his bench players a good run.

Kaiya Tonana scored 8 fourth quarter points for MAGS but it was Blythe who had the last say nailing her fourth three of the game and the team’s fifteenth!

Rangitoto College 112– E Blythe 23, H Wentworth 19, A Rogers 18, M Barrett 20

MAGS 69– R Fiatau 22, M Kelly 22, Kaiya Tonana 8

Both Westlake Girls High and Massey High had a front line player missing from their lineup due to WBC commitments but it was Massey that felt the impact the most. Shauna Povey was on Auckland Dream duty and her loss was significant as the Emme Shearer (Harbour Breeze) less Westlake cantered to a 98-37 win.

Westlake were quickly into their stride forging a 26-11 lead in the opening ten minutes – forward Emma Pugh with 8 points.

Alyesha Schuster and Ramona Fuiavaa were prominent for Massey but could do little to halt the Westlake onslaught – the hosts 52-19 ahead at half-time with Jess Moors on 12 points.

The advantage extended further in the second half as Makenzee Boucher and Maia McBirney knocked down threes. Boucher was one of seven Westlake players with 9 points or more as they chalked up their third straight win.

Westlake 90– J Moors 15, H Williams 11, E Pugh 10, M Boucher 10, T Leyson 10, I Pugh 9, C Leyson 9

Massey 37– A Schuster 11, R Fuiavaa 10, K Ruiz 8

St Kent’s edge Westlake as Rangitoto also remain unbeaten

Nate Wilson MAGS v Rozza

35 points scored by Nate Wilson (21)

Just two teams remain unbeaten after three rounds of the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Boys League. Both St Kentigern College and Rangitoto College made it three wins from three outings with victories against Westlake Boys and Mt Albert Grammar respectively.

It was an emotional occasion up in the Bays on Friday as Rangitoto played out a 76-69 win against Mt Albert Grammar, the victory dedicated to Mark Mandeno who sadly passed away late last week.

A pretty even first quarter ended with Rangitoto 21-18 in the ascendancy. Nate Wilson was in good form for Mt Albert, the power forward accumulating 16 points by half time. However Rangi guard Harry Payne went one better and his 17 points helped the home team to a 47-30 interval lead.

Wilson continued with the hot hands in the third as MAGS closed to ten points (59-49).

Josh Leger and Morgan Aiona helped ease the scoring burden being carried by Wilson as MAGS ate further into the deficit but nine final quarter points from Phoenix Leupolu, boards and points from Jared Thornton, plus a captains knock from Payne ensured a Rangitoto victory on a night when the occasion was more important than the result.

Rangitoto 76– H Payne 24, J Thornton 12, P Leupolu 9, Z Riley 7

MAGS 69– Nate Wilson 35p/14r, M Aiono 11, J Leger 9

The game of the round was the Westlake Boys high versus St Kentigern College encounter with the result not decided until the last possession of the game.

Inside the last two minutes St Kentigern forward Levic Kerr tied proceedings with a lay-up out of a broken play. Westlake failed to score on the next possession but from the ensuing play Martin Gan knocked down a crucial three to give St Kent’s a 74-71 lead. Sam Mennenga trimmed the Westlake deficit to a single point before Alex McNaught kept his nerve at the foul line to nail a pair of free throws.

Westlake coach Zac Fitzgerald drew up an out of bounds play with 4 seconds left on the shot clock but the potential game levelling shot wouldn’t drop and St Kent’s prevailed 76-73.

An even first quarter was punctuated by threes from Josh Kooiman and Dylan Wilkie for the hosts and Kazlo Evans and Gan for St Kent’s.

The visitors had marginally the better of the second to lead 38-32 at half-time.

St Kent’s appeared to be running away with the game in the third as they established an eighteen points advantage courtesy of Evans, McNaught and Kerr.

10 points in the final quarter from Mennenga plus triples from Antonio Luetich, Willkie and Kooiman had the home support on its feet as a Westlake come-back win looked on the cards. However it was St Kent’s who would have the final say in a pulsating finish.

Westlake 73– J Kooiman 23, S Mennenga 19, D Wilkie 11, C Atkinson 6, A Luetich 6

St Kentigern 76– A McNaught 20, K Evans 19, L Kerr 12, J Childs 8, S Broughton 8

A dominant second half performance carried Rosmini College to an 88-55 victory against Liston College after the scores were tied 36 all at half-time.

Kiani Saxon and Shawn Hickey were prominent for Liston as they went toe to toe with the defending champions in the opening period – 9 points from Sean Murphy the highest individual tally.

The scoring virtually ground to a halt in the second spell – just four points scored by each team in the quarter.

Saxon scored half a dozen points in the third but it was a period dominated by Rosmini as Taine Murray and Reimar Cruz found their scoring touch. Terence Abdon and Thomas Morgan knocked down threes and with ten minutes to play Rozza had stretched out to a 62- 48 lead.

Ten points in the last period from Murphy preceded four points for Jett Marshall on his premier debut as Rosmini returned to winning ways after the loss to St Kentigern last week.

Liston 55– K Saxon 13, S Hickey 11, S Prasad 7, D Helu 7

Rosmini 88– S Murphy 21, T Murray 21, R Cruz 10, R Maxwell-Topia 6, J Boucher 6

A couple of threes from Connor Ngan and additional scores from beyond the arc from Stefan Bigio and Jaga Mete took Auckland Grammar out to an early 23-11 lead against Macleans College.

Harry Smith scored a dozen first half points for Macleans but further scoring damage from Ngan, Blake Manning and Daniel Boyd stretched the Grammar lead to 73-46 at the last break.

MacLean’s’ Shawn Hickey took his tally into double figures but Ngan took his personal three-point tally to seven, collectively Grammar made 18 triples, as they eased away in the fourth for a comfortable win – Josh Muggleston helping himself to 11 late points.

Macleans 56– H Smith 19, M Babaran 18, R Dio 6

Auckland Grammar 101– C Ngan 22, J Mete 20, S Bigio 11, J Muggleston 11
