Rangitoto College win without Tai Wynyard

Rangitoto College made light work of Saint Kentigern College in their Secondary Schools Premier Basketball fixture on Friday night.

Played in the Rangi gym the home side was totally dominant in the opening exchanges racing to a 14-0 lead inside

the first 3 minutes.

Rangitoto coach Kenny Stone enjoyed the luxury of resting his starters just five minutes into the game – their fluency did desert them a little with the changes but they still held a 36-12 advantage at quarter time.

Whatever St Kent’s Coach Colin Driscoll said during the break worked a treat as they looked a much more confident side in the second period. Led by guard Aidan Phizackerley – 4 triples in the period – St Kent’s reduced the arrears to 11 points at half time, 56-45.

Phizackerley, on his way to a game high 36 points, kept blazing away in the third period but Rangitoto regained their composure to stretch the lead to 85-62 at three-quarter time.

Rangi’s inside presence led by Yuat Alok (34pts) was too much for the visitors who ran out of steam in the final stanza. A big win for Rangitoto, achieved without Tai Wynyard, injured and sat on the bench!

Final Score: Rangitoto 119 – Alok 34, Denhym Brooke 15, Josiah Williams 13, Joseph Nunag 11, Sam Waardenburg 11 St Kentigern 79 – Phizackerley 36, James Barrett 16, Yicheng Shi 15.

St Kentigern 54-53 won the Premier Girls game. They trailed Rangitoto by 5 points with 30 seconds remaining but conjured up a victory – M Watene scoring the last six points of the game including 4 from 4 free throws.
