Penina Davidson and Family clock up the air miles

The Davidson family has certainly been clocking up the air miles of late.

I spoke to Greg Davidson at the Harbour Basketball Easter Tournament on Friday, he had just finished coaching his youngest daughter Mareta’s U15 Harbour rep game.

Greg and older daughter Penina have just returned from a flying visit to San Francisco where the young Tall Fern has signed a letter of intent to play for the prestigious University of California, Berkley.

UC Berkley was of course the home of New Zealand’s first NBA player Sean Marks, a fitting link as both are former Rangitoto College students. Penina completed her school studies at the end of 2013.

At UC Berkley Penina will come under the tutorage of Lindsay Gottlieb who has established a UCB record by gathering 79 wins in her first three seasons as head coach of the Golden Bears. Gottlieb was Pac 12 Coach of the year in 2013. This year the Golden Bears were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA tournament by Baylor. In the first round they squeezed past Erin Rooney’s Fordham University by a ingle point.

Meanwhile Greg’s son Isaac has just spent a week in Canberra at the Australian Under 18 State championships where the NZ Under 18 Mens tean finished a very creditable 5th, winning six of their nine games. Issac had a game to remember against South Australia Metro connecting with 6 of 7 threes as he collected 19 points in the game.

Fifth member of the family, wife/mother Bronwen is currently in China managing the Junior Tall Ferns. You can read how they are progressing on the BBNZ website as Bronwen is not only overseeing the logistics of moving the team between three cities in China but is also acting as media manager.

They are certainly not idling their time these Davidson’s!

Oh, in case you are wondering where young Mareta got to go. She’s currently visiting exotic locations like the YMCA and North Shore Events Centre as an Easter treat!
