Tom Abercrombie departed Auckland airport on Monday afternoon bound for Lyon, France.
He is joining Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne until the end of the French season. The French club is currently 14-11, sitting 5th on the Pro A League ladder, two wins behind the league leaders Le Mans.
Lyon’s regular season concludes early in May. Should they fail to make the post-season play-offs Abercrombie could be back to play the second half of the NBL season in Hamilton. However Lyon, 17 times French National Champions and boasting NBA star Tony Parker as a former player, and now part owner, are expected to go deep into the play-offs, a scenario that would exclude Abercrombie from the Pistons 2014 campaign.
Abercrombie’s arrival in Lyon will coincide with the departure of his former Breakers teammate Will Hudson. Hudson has played 10 games for Lyon-Villeurbanne, on a short-term contract providing injury cover.
The Pistons championship aspirations have been dealt a serious blow but with a solid core group of Casey Frank, Nick Barrow, Jack Salt, Australian/Kiwi Zac Carter and imports Akeem Wright and Corin Henry the Waikato franchise should still be top four material.
