Anzac Rissetto scores 40 points as Auckland Premier Grade resumes

Anzac Rissetto

The Auckland Secondary School’s Premier competition got underway again with a full round of games on Friday. The top three teams all recorded victories as St Kentigern College joined them in semi-final contention.

Anzac Rissetto was wearing singlet number thirteen and scored Auckland Grammar’s first thirteen points – it proved to be an unlucky omen for Rangitoto College. The New Zealand international centre powered his way to 40 points as Grammar won 95-69.

Grammar took a firm grasp of proceeding in the opening period to lead 26-8 and effectively sealed the deal in the second frame to lead 50-21 at half-time.

Ilaisa Tela complimented Rissetto with 17 points and Caleb Landon chipped in with nine.

Led by 31 points from Harry Payne and double figure contribution from Ethan Skelton and Ethan Mandeno, Rangi made a better showing in the second half but Rissetto had already done lasting damage.

Rangitoto 69 – H Payne 31, E Mandeno 12, E Skelton 11

AGS 95 – A Rissetto 40, I Tela 17, C Landon 9, I Nua 6, T McCarthy 6

Although both teams were deprived of a couple of starters the Rosmini College versus Westlake local derby was still a full-blooded affair played in front of the biggest crowd of the season at the Tom Gerrard Gym.

Taine Murray opened the scoring with a pair of baskets, Joe Wuthrich replied with a brace for the visitors.

Mitch Dance scored off a delightful pass from Kainoa Lepou, Rosmini out to a 15-4 lead and Westlake coach Zac Fitzgerald require a timeout.

Kooiman landed a three on the resumption but Sean Murphy answered with the same number. Kooiman landed another trey prior to further triples from Marvin Williams-Dunn and Lepou – Rosmini ahead 29-14 at quarter time.

Transition baskets from Murray and Lepou followed a Paora Winitana score – 38-20 the lead for the hosts.

Kooiman was having an outstanding first half – 15 points to lead all scorers at the break – his back-to back threes repaired some of the damage inflicted by Lepou and Reimar Cruz but Rozza were in control at half-time leading 53-35.

Rosmini maintained their 20+ points buffer ahead 65-43 six minutes into the third. Jackson Port and Kooiman dropped threes and Campbell Atkinson a spinning inside move to trigger a Westlake mini-revival but they still trailed 72-55 at the end of the frame.

Lepou and Williams-Dunn pounced on a couple of sloppy Westlake turnovers – 81-59 three minutes into the fourth period – the result never in doubt despite late scores from Dylan Wilkie and Winitana.

Rosmini 88 – M Dance 18, T Murray 16, M Williams-Dunn 14, K Lepou 12

Westlake 70 – J Kooiman 18, J Wuthrich 13, P Winitana 13, D Wilkie 9

The battle of the Saints was won by St Kentigern College, Max Shorter (32 points) going past the thirty points mark for the fifth time to pace his team to an 80-63 win at St Peter’s College after they had trailed early on.

Boston Schuster made ten first quarter points for St Peter’s who made a promising start to lead 19-15 after ten minutes.

Tom Chester made a triple late in the first half for St Kent’s but Schuster and Whititera Parata gave the hosts a 35-28 half-time lead.

St Kent’s made a move after the interval as Shorter reeled off 13 points to take his team into the lead (49-48).

Another move, this one of greater significance, came in the final ten minutes as St Kent’s outscored the home team 31-15. Jacob Errey and Max Halpin did their best to stem the tide but St Kent’s forwards Shalom Broughton and Levic Kerr shared 23 points to dominated the closing minutes.

The victory moves St Kentigern into equal fourth place on the ladder with Westlake – the two teams with five wins apiece.

St Peter’s 63 – J Errey 18, B Schuster 18, M Halpin 7, L Buckingham 7, W Parata 7

St Kent’s 80 – M Shorter 32, S Broughton 19, L Kerr 11, Z Chan 8

A balanced scoring effort highlighted Mt Albert Grammar’s 86-70 win at Avondale College as seven players contributed six points or more.

Preston Karatau, on his way to a game high 23 points, knocked down a couple of early triples for Avondale but 10 points from Sataan Tawera gave MAGS a 22-13 lead at quarter time.

Armand Donaldson scored eight second quarter points for the hosts but Ryan Laumatia and Manu Dorcil helped MAGS stretch out to a 49-31 lead at half-time.

Avondale were kept to 11 points in the third quarter, Clarke Aiono adding to their troubles as the MAGS lead reached 67-42 at the last break.

Karatau made his fifth three of the game and Javhir Toyer contributed handy points as Avondale finished strongly although never threatening the lead of the Premier table toppers.

Avondale 70 – P Karatau 23, A Donaldson 16, T Toyer 16

MAGS 86 – R Laumatia 17, S Tawera 17, M Dorcil 14, C Aiono 12

Tall Ferns two from two at William Jones Cup

The Tall Ferns are two from two at the William Jones Cup in Taiwan after beating a feisty South Korea 93-74.

New Zealand started well winning the opening period 28-19 but had to work hard to see off the 16th ranked team in the world – a 14-4 run over the closing minutes seeing them home.

“The Tall Ferns played excellent basketball at both ends of the court’, enthused Head Coach Guy Molloy.

Tall Ferns thump India in William Jones Cup opener

TF v India

Only three places separate New Zealand and India on the Fiba World Rankings but on the court the gap appears a lot wider.

According to those rankings India are placed 45th in the world and New Zealand 42nd but after last night’s 114-39 victory in favour of the Kiwis those rankings look decidedly skewed.

After some tough losses in Japan New Zealand, led by 38 points from Melbourne based guard Ashleigh Karaitiana, were far too strong for India and romped to a very easy win.

Next up on Thursday night are South Korea who will be a far tougher proposition.

NZ U17's

A third period scoring drought, when they scored just six points, and another dry spell down the stretch coat New Zealand a win at the U17 World Cup in Belarus.

The Kiwis trailed by 50-49 with just under two minutes to play but failed to execute in the last 90 seconds and lost a game they could so easily have won.

Unsure if it’s a career best but Tall Ferns guard Chevannah Paalvast scored a monster 35 points (14/24FG) at the weekend as Diamond Valley beat Ballarat Miners 99-62 in South East Basketball League (SEABL) action.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medalist added 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals in a complete all round performance – Diamond Valley to meet Geelong Supercats in the first round of SEABL play-off action on Saturday.

Also in Melbourne Sunbury Jets (12-5) solidified third spot on the Big V ladder with an 83-56 victory over Bulleen Boomers.

Josie Stockill scored 11 points for the Jets and former Tall Ferns trialist Bex Van Kuyk posted 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Queensland Basketball League leaders Townsville Flames (14-2) had a win and a loss on their road trip at the weekend.

Oh so close for U17 Women at World’s

NZ U17 team

The New Zealand team couldn’t quite cap off a fantastic comeback against European heavyweights Hungary at the U17 World Cup in Belarus last night.

Down 22 points and without three injured players the Kiwis staged a remarkable comeback to almost steal the win before going down 68-60.

Queensland based guard Tara Manumaleuga paced the Kiwis with a game high 23 points as she, Sharne Pupuke-Robati (13 rebounds), Charlisse Leger-Walker (10 points & 10 rebounds), Helen Mathews (7 points & 3 steals) and Tayla Dalton played massive minutes in the second half to lead the fight back.

Not all pain as NZ loses to Spain at U17 World cup

NZ U17 Team & Officials

The scoreline of 83-48 in favour of Spain suggests the Kiwis were hammered in their first ever Fiba U17 World Cup game.

In fact New Zealand went toe for toe with their illustrious opponents until midway through the third quarter. Trailing 43-36 they were well in the contest but from there things went downhill as the Ferns were outscored 40-12 in the last 15 minutes, committing far too many turnovers.

Plenty to be encouraged about with strong contributions from Jazz Kailahi-Fulu, Tayla Dalton, Tara Manumaleuga, Charlisse Leger-Walker and Sharne Pupuke-Robati.

Tom Higgins latest Kiwi to commit to an NCAA Div II college

It’s difficult to keep tabs on all the Kiwis attending college in the States and those we pay closest attention to are invariably the NCAA Division I players.

However with the ever-growing number of New Zealand players heading to Division Two schools interest in that level of the college game is bound to increase.

The announcement this week that Tom Higgins, who has been training with the Mainland Eagles Academy since leaving Auckland Grammar School last year, is headed to Texas A&M International next month the interest in the Heartland Conference which will feature four Kiwis next college season has been heightened.

In addition to Higgins two other freshmen, Will Heather and Oscar Oswald, will be playing in the Heartland Conference as will Nikau McCullough.

Higgins will head to Texas to play for the Dustdevils following the Fiba U18 Asia Cup in Thailand early next month. Also on international duty is former Palmerston North Boys High standout Oscar Oswald who will head to St Edwards University, Austin in August.

The third freshman is William Heather – the former Rosmini College forward will suit up for Dallas Baptist University Patriots the reigning Heartland Conference regular season champions. Heather and Higgins will come face to face early in the conference season, the Patriots entertaining the Dustdevils at the Burg Centre in their conference home opener on December 1st.

Waikato guard McCullough is about to embark on his third year at St Mary’s University, Texas. McCullough was a member of the New Zealand 3×3 team that won gold at the 2015 Fiba U18 World Cup in Hungary. In addition to the former St John’s College star that team comprised of Tai Wynyard, Sam Timmins and Matt Freeman.

The Tall Ferns team heads to Japan on Tuesday morning with a number of the young, inexperienced squad displaying good club form of late.

On Friday Stella Beck scored 16 points and added 8 rebounds and 4 assists as league leaders Townsville Flames proved too hot for USC Rip City in the Queensland Basketball League (QBL) winning 82-66.

Also in the QBL Brooke Blair scored 9 points for Rockhampton Cyclones as they blew away Toowoomba Mountaineers 103-60. Blair is averaging 16 points per outing for the Cyclones.

Kalani Purcell, who will captain the Tall Ferns on the trip, was in double-double form as South West Metro Pirates enjoyed twin successes at the weekend with an 81-72 win against North Gold Coast Seahawks and a 79-70 victory at Brisbane Capitals. Against the Seahawks she racked up 11 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals and was even more dominating against the Capitals(20points, 12 rebounds, 8assists and 5 steals).

Newcomer Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 15 points for Bendigo Lady Braves as they remain unbeaten in SEABL action with a 91-83 win at Geelong Supercats.

Tessa Boagni, Penina Davidson, Alyssa Hirawani, Nicole Ruske and Tera-Akiene Reed have enjoyed a week off since the New Zealand Women’s Basketball Championship (WBC) concluded in Dunedin.

Both Ruske and Davidson were named to the WBC All-Star Five. Ruske played a key role for the Gold Rush as they claimed the 2018 WBC title averaging 16.2 points per game.

Davidson, recently graduated from Cal Berkeley, averaged 16.8 points and 14 rebounds per game for Harbour Breeze. Reed, also paying for the Breeze, averaged 23 points per outing.
