Bygate and Kereama clinch title in style

The Sunbury Jets, with Tall Fern Jess Bygate to the fore, have gone 24-0 this season and in the process claimed the Big V Division 1 title.

On Saturday the Jets, leading the best of three grand final series 1-0, comfortably disposed of Geelong Supercats 79-54 to clinch the title – Bygate contributed 12 points in the win. The starting power forward shot 5 from 8 from the field and added a couple of free throws in 23 minutes of action.

Having won 62-41 in Geelong the previous weekend the Jets were pushed, until half-time at least, on their own court.

Sunbury trailed 7-2 early in the game but recovered to lead 18-16 at quarter time extended to 37-27 at half-time.

The Kennedy Kereama coached Jets secured the title in the third with a blistering 27-10 period in front of an enthusiastic crowd packed into the Hangar.

Kereama, also head coach of the Tall Ferns of course, was naturally extremely satisfied with his team’s achievements.

“I am really proud of my team going undefeated, the only State League team in Australia to do it. To win a championship after putting in so much hard work is a nice reward for the players, staff and club. It was even better to do it on our home floor where we could share it with our home supporters and members.

“We have built a programme that prides itself on defence and that plays unselfish offence on the other end of the floor. Statistically we have led the league at both ends.

“I have been lucky enough to be able to bring in a few players I have coached in state leagues around Victoria from my SEABL days and to bring in an incredible import in Courtney Duever plus a national team member in Jess Bygate. Then I had a great blend of local talent. All these players have completely brought into my style of play and worked their butts off!

“So it’s great to be rewarded with a championship on our home court,” Kereama added.

The success of Kereama and Bygate brings the curtain down on 11 months of continuous action by out Tall Ferns and Tall Blacks overseas.

There will only be a short lull before the action begins again in the Australian NBL and WNBL in October. The European season also begins in early October with the American College season tipping off in November.

Season Best for Duane Bailey plus play-off news involving Tall Ferns

It was a weekend of mixed results for the Australian based New Zealand internationals.

In the Queensland Basketball League Chevannah Paalvast and the Townsville Flames travelled down to Mackay to face the Meteorettes in a quarter-final tie.

The Meteorettes had beaten the Flames twice in regular season action and once again they rose to the occasion winning 82-67 after leading 50-33 at half-time.

Paalvast made 16 points and added 7 rebounds for Townsville but it wasn’t enough to upset Mackay.

The Tall Ferns guard will now focus on preparing for her second season with Townsville Fire in the Australian WNBL. The defending champions open their season in early October.

The season also came to an end at the quarter-final stage for Lisa Wallbutton in the Western Australian State League.

The Perth Redbacks had been defeated 90-66 by Rockingham Flames in game one of the series last weekend. It was tough going again for the Redbacks on Friday going down 77-56 to be eliminated in two straight games.

Wallbutton came up with her customary double figure rebounding Haul, a nice round 10 on this occasion. She also scored 6 points but the Redbacks were beaten comfortably.

Also in the State League it was better news for Toni Edmondson as Perry Lakes Hawks outlasted Mundurah Magic although it took a third game to separate the two teams.

The Hawks were defeated 73-65 at Mundurah on Friday but they protected their home floor on Saturday with a 71-59 win to progress to the semi-finals.

Edmondson contributed 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the decisive game after being restricted to 9 points in the second encounter.

In Melbourne the Sunbury Jets were too hot for Mildura Heat. The Kennedy Kereama coached Jets powered to a 21-9 first quarter lead before easing to an 82-59 victory.

The Jets, for whom Jess Bygate supplied 15 points and 6 rebounds, look likely to progress to the the Big V Division 1 grand final in two straight games when the best of three semi-final series resumes next weekend.

Duane Bailey was in good form for Brisbane Spartans as they rounded out their SEABL regular season with a 93-86 victory against Frankston Blues

Bailey, in just his tenth game for the Spartans, produced a season best 22 points and also snared 8 rebounds.

The CJ Bruton coached Spartans will now face top placed Bendigo Braves in the major semi-final next weekend. The winners advance to the Eastern Conference Final, the losers face the minor semi-final winners.

Edmondson and Paalvast shine in Australia

Toni Edmondson

There were mixed fortunes for our two Tall Ferns involved in play-off action in the State League in Western Australia at the weekend.

Both Lisa Wallbutton and Toni Edmondson were involved in the first game of the best of three quarter-final series for their respective clubs.

Wallbutton and the Perth Redbacks look as if they will have their work cut out to progress against Rockingham Flames after going down 90-66 in game one on Friday night.

Wallbutton produced a solid 7 points and 10 rebounds for the Redbacks but the Flames, aiming for a championship three-peat, were never threatened after establishing a 25-13 opening quarter lead.

There was a more positive outcome for Edmondson and Perry Lakes Hawks.

The Hawks won a thriller coming from behind to defeat Mundurah Magic 71-69 with Edmondson contributing 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

The Hawks put a defensive spell on the Magic in the fourth quarter keeping them to just 8 points after trailing 61-57 at three-quarter time.

The second (and third if required) games in the series will be played this coming weekend.

Chevannah Paalvast and the Townsville Flames rounded out their regular season fixtures in the Queensland Basketball League with a 71-60 home win against Bundaberg.

Paalvast scored a game high 27 points and added 8 rebounds for Townsville.

The result means that Townsville finished fourth on the QBL ladder and will now have to travel to Mackay for a quarter-final tie next weekend.

Brisbane Spartans came unstuck in the penultimate round of the SEABL regular season programme losing both games on their away trip south.

On Saturday the Spartans were defeated 89-74 at top of the table Bendigo Braves then lost 87-76 at Albury Wodonga Bandits the following day.

Duane Bailey put together a handy 13 points and 7 rebounds performance against the Bandits but was ice cold at the Braves converting just one of 12 shots for 2 points and 2 rebounds.

Kiwis heading for play-off action in Australia

The major news out of Australia last week concerning New Zealand international players was that Chevannah Paalvast has extended her stay with the Townsville Fire for a further year.

Having secured a championship during her maiden season in the WNBL the 24-year-old Tall Fern will return to the Fire looking to establish herself as one of the competition’s premier lock-down defenders.

During limited minutes for the Fire last season, Paalvast showed glimpses of her international form.

“I’m extremely happy to have signed with the Fire once again,” Paalvast said.

“It’s great to be back playing with some amazing teammates and coaches and to be able to stay in this community.

“It’s a great place to play basketball,” added the former Waitakere player.

During the WNBL ‘off season’ Paalvast has remained in Townsville playing in the Queensland Basketball League where she is averaging 15.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists for Townsville Flames.

She didn’t quite match those numbers on Saturday although the Flames did take care of business beating Sunshine Coast Rip 74-68.

Paalvast added 4 assists to 6 points as the Flames head into their final regular season game holding equal second spot on the ladder with two other teams.

Over in Perth both Lisa Wallbutton and Toni Edmondson will be involved in State League quarter-final action next week.

Edmondson came extremely close to a rare triple double recording 16 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists as Perry Lakes Hawks downed Kalamunda Eastern Suns 94-72.

Wallbutton was also in fine form nabbing 14 points and 12 rebounds but Perth Redbacks went down 77-65 to Willetton Tigers.

The quarter-finals will be best of three affairs with Perry Lakes facing Mandurah Magic and the Redbacks up against Rockingham Flames.

In Melbourne the Sunbury Jets have earned themselves a week’s holiday!

The Kennedy Kereama coached Jets finished the Big V First Division regular season with an unblemished 20-0 record after two one sided victories at the weekend.

On Saturday it was top versus bottom and the outcome was predictable as the Jets crushed Craigieburn 101-47. It was a little closer on Sunday but the Jets still rumbled over Keilor Thunder 90-56.

Tall Ferns forward Jess Bygate had 10 points and 5 rebounds against Craigieburn and 5pts/7rebs against the Thunder.

The Jets now get to put their feet up and watch the teams placed 3-6 in the league play-off for semi-final spots at the weekend.

Duane Bailey appears to be finding fitness and form at the right time of the season in Brisbane. The former Tall Black scored 13 points and snared 8 rebounds as the Brisbane Spartans staged a come from behind 93-81 victory against Albury Wodonga Bandits after trailing 45-33 at half-time.

With two rounds to play in the SEABL regular season the Spartans boast a 14-7 record and have secured second place on the Eastern Division table ahead of the play-offs later in August.

New Zealand international Chevannah Paalvast will return to the JCU Townsville Fire after signing a new one-year deal.

Having secured a championship during her maiden season in the WNBL, the 24-year-old, who has spent the off-season with the Tall Ferns attempting to qualify for the Rio Olympics, will return to the Fire looking to establish herself as one of the competition’s premier lock-down defenders.

During limited minutes for the Fire last season, Paalvast showed glimpses of her international form that has seen her secure a place in the starting line-up for New Zealand and has carried that through to the QBL where she is averaging 15.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists for Townsville Flames.

“I’m extremely happy to have signed with the Fire once again,” Paalvast said.

“It’s great to be back playing with some amazing teammates and coaches and to be able to stay in this community.

“It’s a great place to play basketball,” added the former Waitakere player.

Having proven herself in the international arena in recent months – and last year’s Oceania Championships – head coach Claudia Brassard said she was hopeful of Paalvast taken on a greater role for the Fire in her sophomore season.

“Chevy is a very hard working player who commits herself to our team and our culture by giving 100 per cent,” Brassard said.

“She is an aggressive and athletic defender that can provide immediate impact in the game.

“She had a solid off-season with the New Zealand team and hopefully she keeps building on from there.”

Fellow Tall Fern Micaela Cocks has also committed to a further year with the AWNBL champions.

The Fire have one remaining contracted position for 2016/17 with an announcement expected in the near future.

JCU Townsville Fire Squad: Haylee Andrews (development player), Suzy Batkovic, Micaela Cocks, Darcee Garbin, Mia Murray, Chevannah Paalvast, Mia Murray, Kayla Standish, Ainsley Walsh (development player), Kelly Wilson and Jacqui Zelenka.

Wallbutton and Edmondson rebound in style

Basketball - Tall Ferns v Japan, 27 August 2009

Toni Edmondson

Tall Ferns Lisa Wallbutton and Toni Edmondson demonstrated their rebounding capabilities by collecting a combined 38 boards at the weekend in State League action in Perth.

Edmondson combined 13 rebounds with 12 points as Perry Lakes Hawks secured an impressive 75-62 victory against highflying Rockingham Flames 75-62.

The Hawks moved to 14-7 and 4th place on the ladder with the win, the Flames dropping from first to second.

Lisa Wallbutton had a double figure rebounding count in both Perth Redbacks games. On Friday the Redbacks were well beaten 80-53 by the highly rated Joondalup Wolves with Wallbutton snaring a game high 13 rebounds.

There was better news for the Redbacks on Saturday as they eased to a 69-42 win against Lakeside Lightning to maintain seventh spot and a likely spot place in play-off action with just one game in the regular season remaining.

Wallbutton had 4 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals in the win.

Townsville Flames moved up to third on the Queensland Basketball League table with a 77-60 victory at Cairns Dolphins on Saturday.

Chevannah Paalvast posted 11 points and 5 rebounds as the Flames recovered from a 39-37 half-time deficit. A 25-9 third quarter did the trick and carried Townsville to their 11th win of the campaign.

The Kennedy Kereama coached Sunbury Jets moved to 18-0 in the Big V First Division with a 97-41 demolition of Werribee Devils.

Forward Jess Bygate returned to the Jets lineup and posted an efficient 13 points.

The former Nelson forward made all four shots from the field as well as 5 from 7 free throws.

Duane Bailey scored 12 points and collected 8 rebounds as Brisbane Spartans protected home court advantage as they accounted for the Australian Centre of Excellence 101-92 in the SEABL Eastern Division.

The C of E is largely made up of the Australian Under 17 team that finished fifth at the recent FIBA Under 17 World Championships.

In other news from Australia former Breakers guard Rhys Carter has signed with Plymouth Raiders for the 2016-2017 British Basketball League season. The Raiders are coached by another former Breaker Daryl Corletto and had Duane Bailey on their books last season.

Double double for Chevannah Paalvast

Overall it was a good weekend for the New Zealand international players based in Australia.

Duane Bailey, obviously making progress from the calf tear he recently suffered, logged 25 minutes for Brisbane Spartans in his fifth game since joining the club at the conclusion of the Southland Sharks season.

The Spartans won a high scoring affair 112-101 against Ballarat Miners in a SEABL Eastern Division tie. Bailey scored 11 points (5/7FG) and added 4 rebounds as the Spartans consolidated second place with a 12-7 record.

Tall Fern Chevannah Paalvast is also based in Queensland playing for Townsville Flames in the Queensland Basketball League.

The Flames split a double-header road trip beating Gladstone Power 88-78 on Friday but then got blown away by Rockhampton Cyclones, 106-91, on Saturday.

The Flames are fourth on the ladder with a 10-4 record.

Ironically Paalvast was relatively quiet in the win on Friday (4pts, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) but close to her best against the Cyclones breezing to a double double of 23 points (10/16FG) and 10 rebounds.

Former Tall Fern Charmian Mellars (nee Purcell) is still getting it done for Gladstone. She produced a team high 20 points plus 11 rebounds.

Lisa Wallbutton was also in good scoring touch for Perth Redbacks as they hammered South West Slammers 100-59 in the Western Australian State League on Saturday.

Wallbutton accumulated 16 points (6/11FG) and gathered 9 rebounds as the Redbacks squeezed back into the top eight with the win.

Sunbury Jets were without Jess Bygate for their visit to Latrobe City but the Kennedy Kereama coached outfit just rolled out another win to remain top of the Big V First Division. The Jets beat Latrobe 78-53 and have now won 17 straight and are yet to be beaten in the current campaign.

Duane Bailey struggling with a calf injuy

Over in Australia the State Leagues are in full swing and a number of New Zealand internationals are featuring strongly.

Duane Bailey participated in something of a SKYCITY Breakers reunion on Saturday in Melbourne.

The Brisbane Spartans duo of Bailey and coach CJ Bruton visited the Melbourne Tigers in a SEABL Eastern Division tie. Melbourne have former Breakers Rhys Carter and Darryl Corletto in their lineup.

The former Tall Black, playing just his fourth game for the Spartans only played the first 85 seconds as his team disposed of the Tigers 87-69 to remain second on the ladder with an 11-7 record. Bailey, recovering from a calf tear (ouch!), left the court early, only started in order to log enough appearances to be eligible for play-off action later in the season.

For the record Corletto (9 points) and Carter (7 points) shot a collective 6 from 24 from the field as the Tigers continue to struggle.

Tall Fern Chevannah Paalvast is playing in the Queensland Basketball League for Townsville Flames.

The Flames had a successful double header road trip at the weekend beating Gold Coast Rollers 105-80 on Friday and South West Metro Pirates 92-72 on Saturday.

Paalvast was in sparkling form on Saturday scoring a game high 29 points (10/20FG) to add to 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.

On Friday she had scored 16 points as the Flames improved to 9-3 for the season.

Further south the Kennedy Kereama coached Sunbury Jets improved their record to 16-0 at the top of the Victorian Big V First Division.

Sunbury soared away from Chelsea Gulls winning 93-47 with Tall Fern forward Jess Bygate notching a double double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Over in the State League in Western Australia Lisa Wallbutton is suiting for Perth Redbacks. The Redbacks are currently seventh, just inside the top eight play-off bracket but slipped to a disappointing 88-79 loss to eleventh placed Lakeside Lightning on Saturday.

Wallbutton had 5points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 3steals and 2blocks as the Redbacks slip to a 9 win-9 loss record.

After a double header last weekend Toni Edmondson and her Perry Lakes Hawks side were without a fixture at the weekend. Edmonson is averaging 16 points per game for the Hawks who are sitting fourth on the SBL ladder with a 12-7 record.

Tall Ferns Back in Action

QBQ8NiEkQk6JuXfWDDptfQ.jpg

The Olympic Qualifying Tournament only ended ten days ago but a trio of players that were in action for the Tall Ferns in France suited for their club sides in Australia at the weekend.

Chevannah Paalvast showed good form for Townsville Flames in the Queensland Basketball League. The Kiwi guard scored 20 points for the Flames but they were doused 94-67 by Mackay Meteorettes (not sure about that name). Townsville were just ten down at three-quarter time but were dominated 28-5 in the final period as they slip to a 5-3 record.

The Perth based pair of Lisa Wallbutton and Toni Edmondson had contrasting fortunes. Edmondson put up an impressive stats line of 23 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals as Perry Lakes Hawks (12-6) cemented a place in the top four of the State League with a 91-57 mauling of Cockburn Cougars. The Hawks set up the win with a dominant 29-9 second quarter.

Lisa Wallbutton found points hard to come by making just one of ten shots from the field as the Perth Redbacks were bitten 70-55 by Willeton Tigers. Wallbutton only managed three points but she did top the Redbacks rebounding count with 10 boards.

Samara Gallaher withdrew from Tall Ferns consideration due to injury but she has made a comeback recently for Hume City Broncos in the Victorian Big V League.

On Saturday the Broncos (13/1) had a top of the table clash with Ringwood Hawks (14/2) and in a possible Grand final preview Hume came out on top 78-63. Gallaher didn’t score any points but did contribute 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in the win.

The Sunbury Jets have continued to dominate Division One of the Big V League. Whilst Kennedy Kereama was away on Tall Ferns duty assistant Lisa Townsend took up the coaching reins and she ensured the Jets unbeaten run was maintained.

Kereama was back on board on Sunday as the Jets soared away from Western Port winning 89-41 and now boast a 13-0 record. Tall Fern forward Jess Bygate followed contributed 12 points to Sunbury’s latest success.

Tall Black forward Duane Bailey has recently joined the CJ Bruton coached Brisbane Spartans. The Spartans sit second on the SEABL Eastern Conference table with a 10-6 record after defeating Dandenong Rangers 98-73 on Saturday.

Bailey, playing his second game for the Spartans, had 10 points (4/8FG) and 6 rebounds in 22 minutes of action.

Tall Ferns: 10 Things We Learnt

dxpaVCDLNEm86JCtxwrUOw.jpgAs the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament drew to a close with France, Spain, Turkey, China and Belarus all booking their seats for Rio, the Tall Ferns will reflect on what might have been. But for a tough schedule and a cruel late refereeing call in the final two seconds of the game against Cuba they could have gone deeper into the tournament.

Progress to the quarter-finals would have meant a tough match up against Turkey but in a two horse race anything could have happened. It would also have thrown the Kiwis a second lifeline – playing off for fifth spot if defeated by Turkey.

The 12 game build up and the OQT have confirmed a few facts we already knew about the Tall Ferns and thrown up some additional considerations.

1 When they can call on their strongest players they are good. In fact they can be very good as the win against Spain, ranked No3 in the world, demonstrated. There were other good victories against Czech Republic, Latvia and Montenegro.

The first half effort against France in front of a parochial home crowd in Nantes was also high class. Finding consistency is the key.

2 Coach Kennedy knows what that key looks like and how to unlock the door to that consistency, “You can see how competitive our team is we simply don’t have enough games – more games are crucial,” he said.

3 The merging of the Oceania and Asia zones is a big plus with regular competition assured and having to beat those dam Aussies for an automatic spot at the Olympics or World Champs now no longer our major route for entry. The downside is that the likes of Japan, China and Korea are very well resourced, have massive playing numbers and with professional domestic leagues can call on players for extensive preparation camps at any time.

4 Our best players are scattered across three continents making preparation a major challenge.

MqyMbaspYEOToDpLLCh8hw.jpg

5 Talking of best players Jillian Harmon is world class. Against Cuba she was exceptional playing all but a minute twenty five seconds and producing 25 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists a block and a steal.

6 Pulling together a largely New Zealand domiciled team to take on China B last month in Auckland was a terrific initiative by Basketball New Zealand. Exposing more players to international basketball can only help the Tall Ferns programme.

7 Sports governing bodies are often under fire but it’s appropriate to hand out another bouquet to Iain Potter and his starting five – that’s about all there are in his Wellington kiln. The build up afforded the Tall Ferns – 12 warm up games – was exceptional. Usually coaches are bemoaning lack of preparation time but not coach Kennedy this time.

“Our build up for the Olympic Qualifiers is great. We are playing a number of good teams – in fact nine of the ten are ranked above us, so we will be pushed during every game,” he said at the start of the campaign.

p4eYI7kD-Em1MXCRbiswZA.jpg

8 The quality games brought out the best in the players with Toni Edmondson, Micaela Cocks, Kalani Purcell, Chevannah Paalvast, Jillian Harmon, Penina Davidson and Deena Franklin all starring in winning performances at one stage or another during the six weeks campaign.

9 The old adage that you can’t coach height rings so true with this team. We have a bundle of undersized forwards including Kalani Purcell, Lisa Wallbutton, Jess Bygate and Deena Franklin who at international level box above their weight in the four spot. The centres Josie Stockill and Penina Davidson have performed heroically. Like welterweights taking on heavyweights they have been unwavering in the face of giant opponents such as Isabelle Yacoubou (France) and Clenia Noblet (Cuba).

Can Canterbury Wildcats centre Ashley Gayle find a New Zealand passport on GrabOne next week or Opals centre Liz Cambage suddenly discover she has grandparents from Gore and change allegiance?

10 Finally with a couple of senior players now likely to retire from international basketball opportunities abound for some of our younger players. If I were in the shoes of Krystal Leger-Walker, Brooke Blair, Shalae Salmon, Katelyn Noyer and the rest of the junior brigade I would be heading for the practice court right now. After all the 2017 Oceania-Asia Championships are only 15 months away and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast seven months after that.

The Tall Ferns have a lot to look forward to.
