Four Tall Ferns in College – Four Fine Performances

pcafxfhzexzjbwv-20141122193608

US College action in the last 48 hours has seen four of our Tall Ferns in action, all making major contributions for their respective teams.

Stella Beck nabbed 17 points as St Mary’s Gaels went down 85-69 to Washington State. The Hutt Valley guard shot 6 from 12 and also added three rebounds and two assists but the Gaels have started the season with two losses.

Waikato’s Krystal Leger-Walker and Northern Colorado Bears have begun the campaign 1-1 after losing at Denver 83-62. The shooting guard, obviously given the green light by the Bears coaching staff, put up 21 shots for NCB connecting with 5 as she produced 11 points to go with 5 assists and 3 boards.

California State Northridge Matadors are also 1-1 after going down to San Diego 76-67. Tessa Boagni was terrific with a double double of 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Matadors. The Cantabrian centre also produced 3 blocks and a steal.

Penina Davidson was the only winner of the four. The Rangitoto College alumni contributed 12 points (6/10 FG) and 6 rebounds as the Golden Bears mauled Santa Clara 73-58. Davidson also snared 3 steals for good measure.

Plenty to like as Tai Webster and Jillian Harmon headline overseas efforts

Jillian Harmon receives the plaudits this week, her 25 points haul for Le Mura Lucca earning the Tall Ferns forward the player of the week gong for performances by our international ballers overseas. Lucca thumped La Spezia 93-47 in Italian League action.

Overall second and best of the Tall Blacks overseas was Tai Webster. The combo guard scored 20 points at a pretty efficient 7 from 12 shooting as Nebraska opened its season with an 83-61 victory against Sacramento State.

Mike Karena earns third spot after scoring 16 points (8/9FG) as Sammic ISB beat the unfortunately named Moron 62-49 in the Spanish LEB Silver comp.

Freshman Krystal Leger-Walker made a nice start for Northern Colorado Bears making 14 points in a 79-73 victory against Colorado.

The more experienced Stella Beck, two years under her belt at St Mary’s, had a nice stat line of 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals but the Gaels went down to Penina Davidson’s (5 points, 2 rebounds) California Berkley 74-67.

Tall Ferns team mate Tessa Boagni conjured up 10 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists as Cal State Northridge Matadors accounted for Portland State 99-72.

Bubbling under last week:

Jack Salt played 27 minutes as a starter as Virginia Cavaliers accounted for UNC Greenboro 76-51. The former Westlake centre produced 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a block.

Senior Kalani Purcell put together a sedate performance by her lofty standards as BYU Provo Cougars opened the season with a comfortable 68-50 victory against Utah Valley. Purcell snared a team high 9 rebounds to compliment 6 points, 5 assists and a pair of steals.

Mate v Mate

A couple of Australian WNBL games matched Tall Fern against Tall Fern. Micaela Cocks and Jess Bygate both got in foul trouble as Townsville Fire just beat Melbourne Boomers 74-72 on Sunday in Melbourne. Cocks fouled out in 30 minutes for the Fire after contributing 5 points, 2 rebounds and a couple of steals. Bygate only disturbed the foul column on the stats sheet and perhaps came close to setting a Boomers record as she collected 4 personals in 3:57.

Jordan Hunter (3 points, 3 assists) and Adelaide Lightning are still winless after 6 rounds going down 75-63 to the table topping Perth Lynx at home on Saturday. Toni Edmondson contributed 4 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists to the Perth effort.

In other News

Shout out to Matt Freeman. He is not a Tall Black yet but 15 points on his regular season debut for Oklahoma University in the 97-61 win against Northwestern State will have been noted. The swingman scored with 6 of his 7 scoring attempts including 3 from 4 threes.

Sad to report that Brooke Blair suffered a serious injury just 5 minutes into Idaho State’s first game of the season. The Tall Ferns guard has a suspected ACL injury and awaits the outcome of an MRI scan.

Junior Tall Fern Tera Reed has committed to playing for Virginia Commonwealth University in the 2017-18 collegiate season. The Rams play in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10).

Emondson takes the honours this week and College season tops off

Unknown

There was plenty of action overseas last week as the college season in the USA gears up for a start and Kiwis continue to shine in Australia and Spain.

Toni Edmondson continued her good early season form and claimed top spot amongst Kiwi internationals overseas this week. The Cantabrian scored a season high 16 points as Perth Lynx secured a second consecutive one sided home win beating Melbourne Boomers 90-59. Edmondson shot a highly efficient 7 from 10 from the field and 2 of three at the foul line.

In second spot Mike Karena logged a game high 35 minutes as Sammic ISB won 80-76 at Agustinos in the Spanish LEB Silver comp. A nice 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 blocks for the Canterbury Rams forward.

Isaac Fotu claimed third place with 9 points, 6 rebounds and three assists but Zaragoza surprisingly went down 80-63 at Obradoiro in Spanish League action.

 Bubbling under last week:

Micaela Cocks scored 9 points (3/5 3PG) as Townsville Fire broke a three game losing streak defeating Sydney University Flames 85-83 in overtime.

Reuben Te Rangi had his best outing of the season for Brisbane Bullets at Vector on Sunday – 7 points, 2 rebounds, a couple of steals and a block for the swingman.

 In other News

The American college teams, or most of them, have been busy playing exhibition games (an attractive term for pre season fixtures) during the last week.

I’m not considering any of these encounters for player of the week status as it’s hard to get a handle on the competitiveness of some of the fixtures. For example Kentucky beat Aspury 156-65! Tai Wynyard was the beneficiary of 11 minutes court time as all the Wildcats got on the scoresheet – Tai had 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks in that time.

Nebraska had a blow out win as well – Tai Webster scored 10 points as the Cornhuskers blew away Chadron State 98-45.

Brooke Blair was also involved in a one sided affair. The Tall Ferns guard opened the season with 20 points as Idaho State Bengals beat Alaska-Fairbanks 88-46.

Kalani Purcell resumed where she left off last season with a stat line of 11pts/10rebs/4a/4stls/1block for BYU Provo Cougars as they disposed of Westminster 77-59. She followed that with 5 points and 10 rebounds against Colorado Mesa University later in the week.

Fellow Kiwi Shalae Salmon scored 7 points in each of the above games for BYU – her first two outings for the Cougars.

Jacinta Beckley notched 12 points and 5 rebounds as Seattle University beat Evergreen.

Penina Davidson landed 9 points and 4 rebounds as University of California, Berkley thumped Westmont 87-48.

Tessa Boagni snared 10 rebounds including 5 off the offensive glass as Cal State Northridge beat Masters Uni 74-53. Boagni added 7 points and 2 blocks for good measure.

Krystal Leger-Walker, in her first outing for Northern Colorado University, scored 8 points to go with 3 rebounds and 4 assists as the Bears beat Regis 71-56 in a pre season game. She followed this with 14 points as Black Hills State was beaten 79-73.

Other debutants included Izayah Le’afa at Sacramento State and Katelin Noyer (2 points/3 rebounds) for Fresno State.

Fotu pips Harmon and Karena for POW gong

Issac-Fotu-1200

It’s hard to overlook a couple of 20+ points haul when handing out the overseas player of the week gong. Jillian Harmon and Mike Karena were outstanding for their respective clubs but the performance of Isaac Fotu, in the strongest league in the world outside of the NBA, is too compelling to ignore.

It was a contentious decision amongst the voting panel of one but Fotu earns this week’s gong.

The Tall Blacks forward came up with a double double of 14 points and 10 rebounds against Real Madrid, one of the major club sides in the world, shooting the ball at a highly efficient 7 from 11 shots. Unfortunately Zaragoza was caned 57-31 in the second half to go down 94-68 to top of the table Madrid. Real remain unbeaten with a 5-0 record whilst Zaragoza (2-4) sits in the bottom half on the Liga Endesa table.

Despite scoring 25 points Jillian Harmon is relegated to second spot. Harmon led all scorers as Le Mura Lucca won a third straight game in the Italian League beating Broni 71-63. For good measure the power forward added 9 rebounds and 6 assists.

Third place went to Mike Karena as he helped propel Sammic ISB to a tight 91-88 success against Cambados. Karena was impressive with 23 points (11/16FG), 7 rebounds and a brace of assists. Sammic are tied for top spot, with a 4-1 record, in the Silver section of the Spanish second division.

Fourth spot went the way of Perth Lynx swingman Toni Edmondson. She scored 13 points and added 5 rebounds and 6 assists as the Lynx protected home court with an emphatic 93-60 win against Jordan Hunter’s Adelaide Lightning

Bubbling under last week:

Micaela Cocks scored 10 points but defending Australian WNBL champions Townsville Fire slipped to a third straight loss this time going down 74-62 on their own court to Bendigo Spirit

Tai Wynyard recovered from a left cheek fracture to take his place in the Kentucky University lineup on Monday (NZ time). Wynyard played 9 minutes for the Wildcats and scored 6 points (2/2FG, 2/2FT) as well as grabbing 3 rebounds – all off the offensive glass.

In other News:

This weekly roundup is largely reserved for reviewing the performances of overseas-based Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns.

However this week I feel the urge to give a mention to former Junior Tall Black Alex Talma.

Talma signed for Texas A&M for the 2014-15 season but was ruled ineligible after playing the 2014 NBL season with the Waikato Pistons.

The Westlake Boys High alumnus had an unhappy time at A&M and transferred to Biola University but was forced to sit out another season, this time red shirting due to the complex collegiate transfer rules in US college basketball.

Finally last Friday Talma’s patience and perseverance was rewarded. The ‘6 8” power forward produced a strong 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals performance as Biola Eagles, the defending NAIA Golden State Conference Champions, thumped Sierra 85-53 in their opening game of the 2016-17 season.

Harmon’s performance the best of Kiwis overseas last week

DSC6140

Jillian Harmon

Jillian Harmon produced the top performance last week by a New Zealand international overseas.

Harmon scored 16 points for Le Mura Lucca (for the second successive game) as they beat Ragusa 62-46 in the Italian League. The Tall Ferns forward secured 5 rebounds for good measure.

Micaela Cocks scored 11 points and added 4 rebounds for Townsville Fire as they went down to Sydney University Flames 69-68. It was a poor weekend for the Fire losing both road games and slipping to 2-2 in the Australian WNBL.

It was a better weekend for Toni Edmondson as she produced a very useful stat line of 8 points (4/6FG), 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal as Perth Lynx improved to 3-2 for the season

Bubbling under last week:

Dion Prewster 9 points (3/7 3PG) in just 12 minutes as Sydney Kings defeat Illawarra Hawks.

Mike Karena had 6 points and 7 rebounds as Sammic ISB were thumped 71-41 by Albacete the Spanish Second Division competition. Sammic were previously unbeaten entering game four of the season but suffered a rude awakening in this one.

Isaac Fotu 7 points and 3 rebounds as Zaragoza return to winning ways defeating UCAM Murcia in Spanish Liga Endesa.

Jess Bygate 6 points and 3 rebounds as Melbourne Boomers beat Bendigo Spirit 71-67 and move to the top of the WNBL ladder

In other News:

Jarrod Kenny played just 3:44 as Perth Wildcats defeated United in Melbourne. The former Westlake standout left the court with a groin strain and could be out of action for 3-4 weeks. To compound Perth’s problems the Wildcats have also lost fellow point guard Damian Martin for a couple of weeks with a jaw fracture.

Top six Kiwi performances overseas last week

Krystal Leger-Walker

Pride of place this week goes to the New Zealand Women’s team at the 2016 FIBA 3×3 World Championships in China as we reflect on a busy week for Kiwis overseas.

The New Zealand team comprised of Georgia Agnew (Waikato), Breana Jones (Auckland/Counties) and the Tall Ferns pair of Deena Franklin (North Harbour) and Krystal Leger-Walker (Waikato).

The team boasted a 3-1 record in pool play and normally would expect to advance to play-off action but the Kiwis were denied by points differential as Netherlands (15.5 pts per game average) and Ukraine (14.5) marginally bettered NZ (14.0) as all three teams finished with a 3-1 record in Pool A. Unfortunately New Zealand missed out on quarter-final action.

Overall this was a fine effort by the New Zealand team to perform strongly at a World Championship event. The team was seeded 16th of the 20 participating nations and defeated three higher ranked teams before being squeezed out by a three points differential.

Franklin (26 points) and Agnew (24 points) both featured in the top 20 scorers in the tournament. There was a degree of compensation for Agnew, who has just returned to NZ after four years at Utah Valley University, as she took the bronze medal in the Skills Contest at the tournament.

The second best performance belonged to Isaac Fotu, the power forward scoring a highly efficient 16 points (8/11FG) to go with 8 rebounds. His effort couldn’t prevent Zaragoza slipping to a third Spanish League defeat in four outings as they lost 87-84 to Sevilla.

Coming in at number three was Jillian Harmon. The Tall Ferns forward scored 16 points for Le Mura Lucca who were beaten 69-68 by Napoli in the Italian League.

Mike Karena, on the back of a perfect shooting night, claimed fourth spot. The 2016 Tall Blacks rookie notched 10 points (5/5FG), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block as Sammic ISB made it three from three in the Spanish Second Division competition. Sammic beat Navarro 63-56.

Fifth was Jess Bygate who had a nice double of 8 points and 8 rebounds in a starting role for Melbourne Boomers on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Boomers and Bygate they were outscored 25-17 in the fourth to go down 88-85 to Perth Lynx in a tight WNBL encounter.

Rounding out the top six was Jarrod Kenny. He scored 9 points including the go ahead triple in the fourth quarter for Perth Wildcats as they held off the Breakers in the Perth Arena on Friday night.

Also worthy of mention are the Cook Islands women’s team and the New Zealand Men’s team that also competed at the 3×3 World Champs. Both teams exited after pool play with a 0-4 record but the collective 8 losses were all against higher ranked teams.

Any players attending a FIBA World Championship event should be congratulated on a rare achievement regardless of the results.

The North Harbour pair of Rory Fannon and Karl Noyer plus Nick Fee and Hamish Sheridan represented New Zealand Men from Waikato. Noyer led the NZ scoring with 20 points.

The quartet of Johaana Bates, Adoniah Lewis, Janet Main and Terai Sadler, familiar names in NZ women’s basketball circles, made up the Cook Islands team.

Bubbling under last week:

Micaela Cocks and Chevannah Paalvast each scored 6 points as Townsville Fire thumped Adelaide Lightning 85-56. Jordan Hunter made it a half dozen trifecta for the Kiwis by landing 6 points for Adelaide as they struggled to compete with the WNBL defending champs.

Toni Edmondson had 4 rebounds and a team high 6 assists for Perth Lynx but it wasn’t a shooting performance to remember for the Cantabrian. The Lynx went down 94-74 at Dandenong with Edmondson a cold 1 from 10 from the field managing just 3 points.

Dion Prewster made his first appearance of the season for the Sydney Kings scoring a couple of points as the Kings defeated Illawarra Hawks 88-84 to hand Andrew Gaze his first W as head coach of Sydney.

NZ Women just edged out at 3×3 World Champs – Cook Islands also exit

14681920_1339501639407852_4820718389238491722_o

The New Zealand Women’s team only lost once at the FIBA 3×3 World Championships in Guangzhou, China but fell agonisingly short of a quarter final berth.

Any team boasting a 3-1 record in pool play could normally expect to advance to play-off action but the Kiwis were denied by points differential as Netherlands (15.5 pts per game average) and Ukraine (14.5) marginally bettered NZ (14.0) as all three teams finished with a 3-1 record in Pool A .

The New Zealand team comprised of Georgia Agnew (Waikato), Breana Jones (Auckland/Counties) and the Tall Ferns pair of Deena Franklin (North Harbour) and Krystal Leger-Walker (Waikato).

Leger-Walker took time out from her pre-season commitments at the University of Northern Colorado where she is about to embark on her freshman season to compete.

Agnew has just returned to New Zealand having completed four years at Utah Valley University where she played 72 games for the Wolverines.

Deena Franklin was an integral member of the Tall Ferns squad during the 2016 international season playing in all 15 games of their international programme.

Breana Jones was a key member of the Auckland Counties Manukau Lady Hawks team this year.

NZ made a good start on Day one defeating Poland (seeded 9th) 13-10 and Ukraine (8th) 14-12. On Day 2 they were well beaten by top seeds Netherlands 20-9 but bounced back to beat Indonesia (15th) 20-18.

Overall this was a fine effort by the New Zealand team to perform strongly at a World Championship event. The team was seeded 16th of the 20 participating nations and defeated three higher ranked teams before being squeezed out by three points on differential.

There was a degree of compensation for Agnew who took the bronze medal in the Skills Contest.

The Cook Islands team, with players that were or are domiciled in New Zealand, were also competing at the World Champs.

The quartet of Johaana Bates, Adoniah Lewis, Janet Main and Terai Sadler were the 19th seeded team but almost upset both China (12th), going down 11-9, and 5th seed Czech Republic (lost 15-13) on Day one.

Unfortunately ‘The Cooks’ ran out of gas on Day 2 going down heavily to France (4th) 21-6 and Romania (13th) 14-5 to also exit the competition after pool play.

The Cook Islands foursome is well known in New Zealand basketball circles. Sadler was a member of the Canterbury Wildcats WBC title winning team in 2016 and Main won the title with Oceana Gold Rush Otago in 2015.

Lewis, a former Waitakere Lady Rangers guard played most recently for Werribee Devils in Melbourne whilst Bates, a former Rotorua age group rep, is now living in Japan.

NZ Women 2-0 at FIBA 3×3 World Champs

3071174_1_s

Deena Franklin

The New Zealand women’s 3×3 team has won two from two in their hard fought opening matches at the FIBA 3×3 World Championships, and are looking hopeful for the playoffs with the top two teams of each pool proceeding. This is a big effort given the New Zealand women are the lowest ranked team in their pool at 16th.

Game one: NEW ZEALAND WOMEN V UKRAINE

Their first game against the eighth ranked Ukraine was an impressive scalp for the Kiwis. New Zealand started slowly and was down in the first half, but slowly reeled in Ukraine to lead for the last minute of the game. Head Coach Anthony Corban said all players contributed and the win should be notched up to a well-synced team effort.

“Krystal Leger-Walker captained the team well. Her tactical ability to read the game and change things up were crucial down the business end of the game. Georgia Agnew was a nightmare for their guards to handle and made some crucial baskets. And Deena Franklin was a mountain of strength on the boards and scoring in the low post.”

The cherry on top was Krystal slot-pass being named the fourth best play of the day.

Final Score New Zealand 14, Ukraine 12.

Game two: NEW ZEALAND WOMEN V POLAND

Again New Zealand came backed up their dark-horse status by rolling ninth ranked Poland in their second game of the day. Corban said both teams were feeling the effects of tough opening games, with the hot humid conditions taking their toll on many athletes at the event. Yet the Kiwis stuck to their game-one plan, proving it to be equally successful in game two.

“Again our double guard punch of Georgia and Krystal were too quick for their opponents. And Deena Franklin was again outstanding, monstering her opponents in the low post and rebounding.”

Final Score New Zealand 13, Ukraine 10.

Next up for the New Zealand women’s team is the number one ranked Netherlands, followed by 15th rank Indonesia, which rounds out the Pool A matches. Both matches will be played on Friday.

 INDIVIDUAL SKILLS CONTEST

Georgia Agnew has made the final of the individual skills contest and will compete for the title on Day 4 at 11.30pm NZ time

NZ MEN

The New Zealand Men’s team has been struggling against stronger opposition, out-ranked and out-played against seasoned and mostly professional teams.

Game one: NZ MEN V RUSSIA

New Zealand went basket for basket with the big Russian team for most of the game, until Russia had a strong run towards the end. Head Coach Anthony Corban says the game changer for the Kiwis was a disputed technical foul on New Zealand.

“We were down one with three minutes to go and got a deflection, and one referee awarded us the possession. The other referee then technicalled one of our players for taunting – when he was clapping his team mate for working hard. It changed the momentum of the game, and Russia were then up two, then hit a two off the next play. Our boys just ran out of steam and melted in the hot and humid conditions.”

 Final Score: NZ 12 –  RUSSIA 22

Game two: NZ MEN V ITALY

New Zealand encountered a tight unit in their loss to Italy. Coach Corban says it was a fairly dominant performance by the team more suited to the conditions.

“As a group we lacked defensive energy and that showed early on when Italy feasted off our poor box outs and racked up five offensive rebounds in a row. The short turn around in games left us struggling to stay in the game over the last minute. The Italians were thriving in the hot and humid conditions while we struggled.”

Final Score: NZ 11 –  RUSSIA 21

New Zealand has two more tough assignments when they round out pool play on Thursday. They face No 1 seeds Serbia after facing No 15 Qatar.

 TEAM ROSTERS

New Zealand 3×3 Women’s Team: Georgia Agnew (Waikato Basketball), Deena Franklin (Harbour Basketball), Breana Jones (Counties Manukau Basketball Association), Krystal Leger-Walker (Waikato Basketball Council).

New Zealand 3×3 Men’s Team: Rory Fannon (Harbour Basketball), Nicholas Fee (Waikato Basketball), Karl Noyer (Harbour Basketball), Hamish Sheridan (Waikato Basketball).

Harmon, Cocks, Palvaast, Hunter, Edmondson and Bygate all back in action overseas

jordan-hunter-1200

Jordan Hunter debuted in the Australian WNBL

The 2016-17 Australian WNBL season began at the weekend with five Tall Ferns in action whilst in Europe Jillian Harmon is currently the lone Kiwi flag bearer.

In the WNBL guard Jordan Hunter is the only New Zealand newcomer to the competition and her debut for Adelaide Lightning was almost one to remember. The Lightning overcame a three point three-quarter time deficit to force the tie into overtime but were eventually outscored 16-2 in the extra period going down 77-63 to Bendigo Spirit on Saturday night.

Hunter logged 24 minutes and snared a game high 3 steals in her typical high-energy fashion. Alas her shooting touch deserted her on the night failing to connect with any of her five attempts.

Last season Jess Bygate was in Adelaide colours but this season she has signed with Melbourne Boomers. The former Nelson Flyers forward will be heartened by Sundays result – her Boomers were too strong for Adelaide winning 75-69 although Bygate only contributed a solitary free throw and a steal.

Hunter, in her second game of the weekend, scored a couple of points and claimed 3 rebounds for Adelaide.

Incidentally Tall Ferns assistant coach and Adelaide head coach Chris Lucas missed the double header having a prior commitment to attend the overseas wedding of his son.

The big game of the round was a match up between last season’s Grand Final protagonists Perth Lynx and Townsville Fire in Townsville.

Townsville, winners of the WNBL for the past two seasons showed that they are still the team to beat. After an even opening quarter they dominated the middle proceedings forging a 68-48 three-quarter time lead before closing out an 84-62 win.

Returning Fire combo guard Micaela Cocks, last season’s Grand Final MVP, scored 13 points for the reigning champions – Chevannah Paalvast chipped in with 2 points and 3 rebounds.

Toni Edmondson scored 7 points and added 4 rebounds and a steal for Perth. It wasn’t all bad news for Perth as they had opened their campaign with a 93-90 victory at Sydney University Flames on Friday night. In that one the Cantabrian swingman had 4pts/4rebs/5assists/1steal.

Jillian Harmon has returned to Le Mura Lucca in the Italian League for a second season. Last week she continued where she had left off at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in France – who could forget her herculean performance back in June when she recorded 25 points (9/17FG) and 14 rebounds as the Tall Ferns went down to Cuba.

In the opening game of the season Lucca proved too strong for Vigarano winning 65-48 with the Tall Fern forward scoring a game high 19 points and adding a pair of steals and 3 rebounds.

Jordan Hunter signs for Adelaide

Jordan-Hunter-1200

Adelaide Lightning have announced that Tall Ferns point guard Jordan Hunter has signed on for the 2016-17 Australian Women’s National Basketball League season.

Hunter will provide the Lightning with added depth in their guard line up.

The 26 year old has been a regular in the New Zealand team since debuting against Japan in 2010 and played all fifteen games during this year’s international programme.

After completing her studies at St Kentigern College in Auckland Hunter headed to Crowder Community College in the States. She later transferred to Southeast Missouri State University, graduating in 2014. She averaged 8.8 points and a team-leading 3.7 assists for the Redhawks in her senior year.

Since then Hunter has been a stand out in the New Zealand Women’s Basketball Championships (WBC) helping her team, Auckland Counties Manukau Lady Hawks, finish runners-up in 2015. Hunter led the competition in points (20.3ppg) and assists (4.5apg) that season.

Tall Ferns assistant Chris Lucas is at the helm of the Lightning where the Kiwi international playmaker has been training for the past few weeks. During her stay she has made a strong impression on Lucas.

“Jordan brings international experience and has worked for her chance to play in the WNBL,” Lucas told the Adelaide Advertiser.

Hunter is delighted to have been afforded the opportunity to join the Lightning.

“I am extremely privileged to get the chance to play. Chris offered me an opportunity to come over and earn my spot on the team, so I was very relieved to know I had secured a contract for the Lightning.

“Chris has gathered a great bunch of girls, the chemistry between us off court is definitely helping us out on court as we have a mixture of young girls and then some awesome veterans both in the squad and on our coaching staff.

“We’re excited and we’re all working hard for this upcoming season,” she added.

Hunter’s signing brings to five the number of Kiwi internationals that will feature in the WNBL this season.

Micaela Cocks and Chevannah Paalvast have re-signed with 2016 champions Townsville Fire, Toni Edmondson has remained with Perth Lynx and Jess Bygate has joined Melbourne Boomers.
