Tai Webster and Isaac Fotu will share a flight back to New Zealand at the weekend as they look to assemble with their Tall Blacks teammates for the World Cup qualifying fixture against Korea.

Before boarding the flight in Frankfurt the pair will be on opposite sides as Webster’s Frankfurt Skyliners entertain Fotu’s Ratiopharm Ulm in a German Bundesliga game.

Last weekend the Skyliners lost their third game of the campaign going down 75-67 at Brose to slip to fifth on the league table with a 6-3 record.

Webster was once again in fine form top scoring in the game with 19 points to go with 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Ulm (4-5) are up to tenth on the ladder after an 88-77 home win against Braunschweig with Fotu scoring 9 points on 4 from 8 shooting.

Good news also from Israel where Corey Webster led all scorers with 22 points as Ironi Nahariya defeated Maccabi Haifa 83-73 with Nahariya improving to 4-2 for the season.

In other news former Tall Blacks swingman Dion Prewster has also headed to Germany, signing with Uni Baskets Paderborn.

Paderborn competes in the Pro-A League, the equivalent of the German second division.

It was also announced recently that Prewster has signed for the Bay Hawks for the 2018 NZNBL season after playing for Nelson Giants in 2017.

Purcell and Cocks shine in WNBL

Micaela cocks

Tall Ferns Micaela Cocks and Kalani Purcell made telling contributions for their respective clubs in the Australian WNBL last weekend.

Melbourne Boomers have bounced back to form with a couple of victories defeating top of the table Sydney University Flames 88-65 and Adelaide Lightning 77-74.

Once again Kalani Purcell was at the heart of the Boomers effort claiming 10 rebounds in each of the Melbourne wins. She added 6 points, 6 assists and 2 steals in Sydney and 4 points and 2 assists against Adelaide.

Incidentally Australian centre Liz Cambage knocked down a career high 44 points for Melbourne against Adelaide

The pair of wins lifts the Boomers to 7-4 for the season and third place on the WNBL ladder.

Sydney remains in top spot but Townsville Fire are second after Micaela Cocks helped the 2016 champions to a comprehensive 94-59 victory against Bendigo Spirit.

Cocks landed 16 points for the Fire including a more than useful four out of six from beyond the three-point arc.

Chevannah Paalvast played 10 minutes – although didn’t trouble the scorers – as Canberra Capitals were defeated 85-67 in Perth.

Jillian Harmon wasn’t in action at the weekend as the Italian League is taking a break whilst the European Championship Qualifying Tournament is taking place.

Kiwis in College – some strong performances as regular season commences

Beck v Davidson

Beck (21) facing Davidson (centre in gold)

The American College basketball regular season swung into action at the weekend with multiple games involving Kiwis taking place. Below is a roundup of the action from Friday and Saturday.

A number of Tall Ferns put in some stirring performances most notably Stella Beck.

Beck knocked down 22 points for St Mary’s Gaels (3/6 3PG) and added 8 rebounds and 4 assists. However it wasn’t enough for the win as Cal Berkeley Golden Bears pipped the Gaels 87-80.

Penina Davidson, making her 100th appearance for the Bears, recorded the second double-double of her college career with 10 points (5/9FG) and a game high 12 rebounds.

In another Mate v Mate clash Brooke Blair emerged with the honours against Jacinta Beckley.

Blair top scored for Idaho State with 16 points (3/5 3PG) as the Bengals beat Seattle Redhawks 74-69. Blair also nabbed a game high 3 steals to accompany 3 rebounds and 4 assists.

Beckley was one of just three Seattle players in double figures scoring 10 points.

Krystal Leger-Walker was also impressive – the combo-guard played 38 minutes and contributed 8 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists as University of Northern Colorado defeated top 25 touted DePaul 94-88 in one of the most significant wins in UNC’s history. It is the Bears first win over a Top 25 rated team since gaining Division 1 status in 2006.

Freshman guard Tiarna Clarke earned the wrath of the referees fouling out in 13 minutes after a mixed bag of 3 points, 4 assists and 3 turnovers.

Tessa Boagni and Cal State Northridge Matadors found the going tough against No 11 ranked Oregon getting whacked 91-43. Boagni finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds and a block.

Kendell Heremaia‪ (2p/5r/4a/2st) and Zara Jillings (4p/5r/1a/1st) played 26mins apiece on their regular season debuts as Fordham University Rams accounted for UMBC 55-46

Dru Toleafoa couldn’t find her scoring touch for Santa Clara finishing with 2 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists as Santa Clara lost 73-69 to Cal state Fullerton.

Katelin Noyer had 4 points, 4 rebounds, a block and a steal as Fresno State Bulldogs beat Eastern Washington 81-56.

News from the Men’s Division 1 scene is that Taki Fahrensohn will redshirt the 2017-18 season. The University of Portland Freshman recently required further surgery on a troublesome knee and although expected back on the training court next month a sensible, cautious approach has been chosen.

On the court Matt Freeman enjoyed a fine opener as the Oklahoma Sooners beat Omaha – that’s the university not the beach – 108-89. Freeman had his perimeter shot going in this one landing all three of his efforts from deep and finishing with 13 points (5/6FG).

Jack Salt played 29 minutes as Virginia beat UNC Greensboro 60-48 in their season opener. Salt finished with 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam – Round three wrap

ABSL-Summer-Jam-2017

Round three of the Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam saw wins for Railsplitters and 68A Nelson Street in the Men’s competition. Storm and Suns prevailed in the Women’s competition.

A fourty point’s second quarter barrage from Railsplitters did the damage against the Breakers Development. The feast of points, served up mainly by Jaylen Gerrand and James Hunter, carried Railsplitters to a commanding 72-44 lead at the interval.

To their credit the young Breakers team, staring down the barrel of a drubbing, responded well in the third quarter as Zack Te Puni and Caleb Langridge spearheaded a strong response. Breakers won the third period 29-18 and continued the good work in the fourth.

Five Breakers players, led by Thabo Manyere’s 19 points, scored in double figures as pride was restored in the second half.

Earlier Daniel Green (4/5 3PG) and Hayden Allen had got Railsplitters off to a fast start, a prelude to a dominant second in which the Breakers transition defence was sadly lacking. An alternative viewpoint was that Hunter and Gerrand were simply unstoppable.

Railsplitters 117 – Hunter 29, Gerrand 25, Green 16, Allen 15, Fesolia 14 Aruwa 11

Breakers Development 107 – Manyere 19, Perrott-Hunt 17, Dance 16, Langridge 14, Te Puni 13

In the second game 68A Nelson Street inflicted a first loss of the season on the Birdmen with a 113-89 victory. The win was achieved on the back of a 31 points scoring effort from Derone Raukawa who shot the ball at a tidy clip – 15 from 21 (71%). Brooke Ruscoe and Ana Haku ably supported him with 20 points and 21 points respectively.

Nick Barrow was the best for the Birdmen, the power forward flirting with a double -double as he finished with 26 points and 9 rebounds.

Birdmen actually led through the opening skirmishes, ahead 24-22 at quarter time before Nelson St eased ahead 51-48 at half-time.

Nelson St made the decisive break at the back end of the third frame extending a ten-point lead (65-55) to a more comfortable 81-67 three-quarter time lead.

Birdmen 89 – Barrow 26, Kelman-Poto 15, Colla 13, Lucas 10, Friday 10

68A Nelson St 113 – Raukawa 31, Haku 21, Ruscoe 20, Boucher 16, Seumanu 13

In a game of significant swings Storm, with major contributions from Deena Franklin (25pts) and Shauna Povey (22pts), proved too good for Sky winning 95-74.

The pair, with help from Sarah Scoular, propelled Storm to a 14-3 lead before Ashleigh Kelman-Poto, Amanda Buck and Riana Rangi-Brown hit back to narrow to 22-17 at the first break.

A couple of triples from Povey countered Rangi-Browns’ efforts to keep Storm ahead 43-40 at half time.

Storm, as they had in the first half, opened the second with a strong run to stretch out to 57-41 before Summer-Jean Motufoua brightened the outlook for Sky. When Hannah Wentworth knocked down an open look the lead had been trimmed to single figures (62-53).

However a 12-2 rumble by Storm with Stevee Theyers and Millie Nathan contributing took the game away from Sky – 73-55 at three-quarter time.

The spoils were shared in the last period with the Storm lead unchallenged.

Sky 74 –Rangi-Brown 23, Kelman-Poto 18, Motufoua 13, Te-Huia 8, Buck 6

Storm 95 – Franklin 25, Povey 22, Scoular 10, Berry 8, Shearer 6

A combined 54 points from guard Luye Murphy and forward Tabitha Jenkins defused the Sparks and took Suns to a second consecutive win.

Murphy landed the first of her four triples in the opening spell as Suns led 21-17 after the first period and 39-33 at half-time despite 15 first half points from Sharne Pupuke-Robati.

Murphy scored 8 points in the third but half a dozen from Sophie Dil kept Sparks alive – down 57-48 with ten minutes to play.

Alyesha Schuster and Mareta Davidson landed a couple of shots apiece for Sparks but Jenkins and Murphy ensured the Suns finished brightly.

Sparks 61 – Pupuke-Robati 21, Davidson 10, Dil 9, Schuster 8

Suns 77 –Murphy 28, A Jenkins 26, Roberts 9

Davidson and Blair beat Beckley and Beck

PeninaIt sounds like the result of a doubles tennis match but it was in fact the first game of the regular season in US college basketball and featured Tall Ferns match-ups. The honours went to the former Rangitoto College duo of Penina Davidson and Brooke Blair.

Davidson, making her 100th appearance for Cal Berkeley Bears recorded the second double double of her college career as the Bears beat St Mary’s Gaels 87-80.

Davidson emerged from a close encounter with 10 points (5/9FG) and a game high 12 rebounds while Stella Beck knocked down 22 points for the Gaels (3/6 3PG) and added 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Blair top scored for Idaho State with 16 points (3/5 3PG) as the Bengals beat Seattle Redhawks 74-69. Blair also nabbed a game high 3 steals to accompany 3 rebounds and 4 assists.

Jacinta Beckley was one of just three Seattle players in double figures scoring 10 points.

All four Kiwis were busy, Beckley’s 24 minutes the least amount of time on court with Blair and Beck required for over 30 minutes apiece.

Kiwi women warming up nicely in USA college pre-season games

It’s only been pre-season games for our Kiwi players in colleges in the USA or as the Americans like to call then – Exhibition Games.

The real thing begins next week but it’s worth highlighting a few notable performances during ‘Exhibition’ time.

Firstly a big shout out to Brooke Blair who scored 17 points for Idaho State Bengals who went down 95-87 against Northwest Nazarine. The 2016 Tall Fern will be mightily relieved as it was her first game back since incurring a season ending ACL injury in the opening game of last season.

In the first game of the regular season this coming weekend Idaho State will visit Seattle which will pitch Blair up against Jacinta Beckley. Seattle warmed up with an easy 104-57 win against Central Washington with Beckley easing to 15 points and 5 rebounds.

Katelin Noyer is striving to nail down the starting centre role at Fresno State and did her chances no harm with 15 points and 6 rebounds as the Bulldogs beat Fresno pacific 93-58.

A couple of more established players Penina Davidson and Tessa Boagni also put in strong performances.

(Raul Martinez /The Sundial)

Boagni claimed 14 points and 7 rebounds as Cal State Northridge Matadors took care of The Masters University 83-65 and Davidson recorded similar numbers (17pts and 7rebs) in Cal Berkeley’s 71-52 against Vanguard.

Vanguard was well served by former Counties Manukau forward Tania Uluheua – who suited for Harbour Breeze in the 2017 WBC. Uluheua scored 13 points on 6 from 9 shooting.

Zara jillings and Kendell Heremaia have both debuted for Fordham University Rams in the last few days. Heremaia was her normal busy self with 6 points, 4 boards, 2 steals and an assist as Fordham cruised past Post University 83-33. Jillings had a game high 5 steals to add to 6 points and a trio of rebounds and assists.

Krystal Leger-Walker contributed five points, as did debutant Tiarna Clarke, in University of Northern Colorado’s 68-51 win against CSU Pueblo.

2014 Tall Fern Dru Toleafoa opened with 10 points and 6 rebounds as Santa Clara easily dispatched Santa Cruz 71-32.

Plenty to look forward to in the upcoming season and we will do our best to keep you updated here on the Laceylowdown

We have a couple of games of special interest this coming week where Kiwi Tall Ferns will go head to head.

Stella Beck and St Mary’s Gaels will go up against Penina Davidson and Cal Berkeley Bears. Also, as mentioned previously, Brooke Blair and the Idaho State Bengals travel to Seattle to take on Jacinta Beckley and the Seattle Redhawks.

Harmon and Purcell shine

J Harmon

The star of the show amongst Tall Ferns overseas this week was Jillian Harmon. The power forward stuffed the stats sheet with 27 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and a block as Napoli gained a much-needed 67-62 win against Battipaglia.

It was just the second win of the season for Napoli as they improved to 2-4 on the Italian League table.

A couple of weeks ago Melbourne Boomers sat top of the Australian WNBL with a 4-1 record but had then slumped losing three games on the bounce.

On Melbourne Cup Day eve the Boomers, in front of a full house of over three thousand spectators, scored a much needed win defeating Victorian rivals Dandenong Rangers 60-57.

It was a setting that brought out the best in Kalani Purcell. She isn’t one to ignite the scoreboard with an avalanche of points but in every other statistical category she is likely to contribute and so it proved on Monday.

Purcell played 34 minutes scoring just two points but snared a game high 10 rebounds and added 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

It was a mixed week for Micaela Cocks and Townsville Fire. The Fire went down 87-68 in Perth against the Lynx but bounced back on Sunday to dismantle Adelaide Fire 84-42.

Cocks totaled 5 points in Perth and with bench minutes spread in the one sided encounter with Adelaide popped up for 3 points and a couple of rebounds.

Chevannah Paalvast scored a couple of points for Canberra Capitals as they went down 81-72 to the top of the table Sydney University Flames.

Tai Webster sinks 31 points for Frankfurt

497db3e44c

Just six weeks into his professional basketball career Tai Webster put up some stunning numbers for Frankfurt Skyliners as they beat Oldenburg 93-82 in the German Bundesliga at the weekend.

Webster put together the best performance to date of his young pro career scoring 31 points, snaring 11 rebounds – including 3 offensive boards – and added 4 assists, a steal and a block in a terrific all court game.

His shooting stats were highly impressive connecting with all three attempts from beyond the arc as he netted 7 from 11 from the field and a tidy 8 from 10 free throws.

The win improves Skyliners to 6-2 for the season and keeps them in second place on the ladder.

Also in Germany Ratiopharm Ulm improved their record to 3-5 with a second successive win downing Tigers Tuebingen 81-74.

Isaac Fotu scored an efficient 8 points to go with 4 rebounds for Ulm. The Tall Blacks forward didn’t miss a shot scoring with all four freebies and both shots from the floor.

Not such good news from Israel where Corey Webster scored just two points as Ironi Nahariya were thumped 97-73 at Gilboa Galil.

Nahariya are 3-2 for the season.

A couple of overtime games in the second round of Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam

ABSL-Summer-Jam-2017

Round two of the Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam featured two overtime games, another comeback of monstrous proportions and a game where one basket separated the teams after 274 points were scored.

In the Men’s competition a much-improved Breakers Development team took 68A Nelson Street into overtime before eventually going down 114-98.

After the scores were tied at 93 points apiece in regulation the SKYCITY Breakers duo of Mitch Newton and Derone Raukawa showed the young apprentices how it’s done in OT.

The pair, having been named in the Tall Blacks extended squad last week, celebrated by scoring all of the 21 points accumulated by Nelson Street in the additional five minutes.

Earlier Anzac Rissetto and Zack Te Puni got the Breakers off to a good start – a balanced attack helping them to a 51-44 half-time advantage.

Seven points in the third frame from Harry Clarke benefitted the Breakers cause but a couple of triples from Newton and inside points from Will Heather and Dillon Boucher closed the gap at three-quarter time – 70-68.

Carl Buck and Brooke Ruscoe propelled Nelson Street on a 10-3 run before Dan Fotu scored five points to tie the game at 78 points apiece with five minutes to play.

It was a one-possession game throughout the closing minutes with a Raukawa three giving Nelson Street a 93-91 lead inside the final thirty seconds. Te Puni calmly converted a pair of freebies to tie the contest and Caleb Langridge ensured additional time was required with an athletic block on Newton’s potential game winning shot.

However Newton and Raukawa had the final say in overtime to give Nelson Street the win.

68A Nelson Street 109 – Newton 31, Raukawa 24, Ruscoe 10, Boucher 10, Haku 10

Breakers Development 98 – Fotu 19, Te Puni 17, Clarke 17, Dance 13, Maxwell-Topia 12

The second game was an offensive onslaught – a shoot-out at the Breakers Corral – as Birdmen beat Railsplitters 138-136. The two major gunslingers were Hayden Allen who set a season best 48 points for Railsplitter and Quinn Clinton who put together a quiet 43 points for Birdmen.

72-69 can often be a fulltime score but that was the half-time tally – edged by Birdmen – as Kevin Braswell, Brandon Lucas and Dominique Kelman-Poto gave Clinton good support.

It was 106-107 at the three-quarter mark and never much in it in the closing stages as the two teams traded blow for blow.

James Hunter, Jaylen Gerrand and the Aruwa brothers gave Allen plenty of support but in the end it was Clinton and the Birdmen that fired the extra bullet to seal the win.

The Birdmen 138 – Clinton 43, Kelman-Poto 27, Braswell 23, Lucas 17, Matambanadzo 12

Railsplitters 136 – Allen 48, Hunter 28, Samson Aruwa 18, Gerrand 18, Samuel Aruwa 15

As last week the Women’s competition provided the comeback of the day although, as on that occasion, it wasn’t quite enough to seal the win.

Team Sky allowed Sparks to build a 26-4 first quarter advantage but fought back admirably before eventually going down 57-52.

Sharne Pupuke-Robati (8pts) and Tayla Dalton (6pts), both back from Asia Cup duty in India, scored fourteen of the first quarter points for Sparks and with Rikki Fiatau adding half a dozen they were in total command at the quarter break.

Hannah Wentworth started something of a revival for Sky but they trailed 45-18 at the interval.

The Sky comeback continued in the second half courtesy of Ashley Kelman-Poto, Amanda Buck and Wentworth. The Orewa College guard knocked down her third triple of the game in the middle of the final stanza but it wasn’t quite enough as Sparks hung on for the win.

Sky 52 – Wentworth 17, Kelman-Poto 15, Buck 7, Tini 6

Sparks 57 – Pupuke-Robati 17, Dalton 15, Fiatau 10

The second overtime game of the day was won 90-86 by the Suns weathering the Storm comeback after the scores were tied 75 each after fourty minutes.

Suns led 36-32 at half-time courtesy of 11 points from hard working forward Jazz Kailahi-Fulu and triples from Tabitha Jenkins and Morgan Ili.

Bella Elgar was the best for Storm at the break scoring 10 points.

Suns stretched their lead to ten points (51-41) in the third but seven points in the period from Stevee-Rose Theyers helped rectify that matter as Sky stole a 56-53 lead at the three-quarter break.

Neither side could forge a telling advantage in the final stanza although Emme Shearer looked to have sealed the win in the final seconds for Sky before a crucial And-1 play from Kailahi-Fulu sent the game into extra time.

Mareta Davidson scored 9 points for Storm in the additional period but back-to-back threes from Anna Lacey in the final 90 seconds proved the difference in the end.

Storm 86 – Theyers 15, Shearer 13, Davidson 12, Nathan 12, Elgar 12

Suns 90 – J Kailahi-Fulu 24, Roberts 17, Lacey 14, T Jenkins 12, A Jenkins 10
