Agony for Tall Ferns in Nantes

Unknown

A double double from Jillian Harmon not enough for Tall Ferns

The Tall Ferns lost their decisive Olympic Qualifying tie against Cuba in agonising and slightly controversial fashion overnight in Nantes going down 64-62. The Ferns exit the tournament having also lost their other pool game 70-52 to France the night before.

The scores were tied 62 apiece when a rebounding foul was called on Micaela Cocks sending Cuban captain Cepeda to the foul line to make the winning free throws with just 1.2 seconds left on the clock.

New Zealand coach Kennedy Kereama felt it was a harsh way to lose, “It’s not a nice way to lose a game on a foul shooting situation when both teams are in the bonus. For us it’s a tough way to go. At the end of the day there had to be a winner and a loser and unfortunately we were on the wrong end of the result.”

Forward Jillian Harmon gave a herculean performance recording 25 points (9/17FG) and 14 rebounds. She scored 21 points in the second half as the Tall Ferns fought back from a 48-39 three-quarter time deficit.

Kalani Purcell and Micaela Cocks scored 9 points each, Toni Edmondson had 8 but collectively the three only shot 7 from 24 on the night.

Just 18 hours after going down to France Chevannah Paalvast opened the Tall Ferns scoring but a sluggish first quarter ended with Cuba ahead 14-10.

New Zealand began the second quarter equally slowly prompting coach Kereama to call an early timeout with his team trailing 18-10. Penina Davidson and Harmon responded with baskets but Cuba moved ahead 26-16 at the mid point of the period. Purcell and Davidson made a couple of valuable baskets but the Tall Ferns headed to the locker room 32-24 behind reflecting on a 32% (10/31) shooting effort and ice cold 0 from 9 three point shooting.

The Tall Ferns playing with much more urgency had a 5-0 run courtesy of Cocks and a Purcell triple. When Harmon made an and 1 play the Cuban lead was cut to just three points, 37-34. The momentum then swung to Cuba who reeled off a 6-0 run of their own and it took a buzzer beating three from Edmondson to keep the Kiwis in the hunt at the final break, 48-39 down.

Points from Purcell and Cocks reduced the lead to 48-43 but a harsh unsportsman like foul called on Davidson handed Cuba their first points of the quarter.

Harmon was carrying the offensive load for the Kiwis with 7 consecutive points and Purcell helped reduce the lead to 58-53 with less than 4 minutes to play.

Harmon made another four points from the foul line but the Kiwis still trailed 62-59 inside the last 30 seconds only for Micaela Cocks to knock down a three with thirteen seconds to play.

The foul call and winning Cuban free throws ensued, the Tall Ferns without time to get off a shot in the 1.2 seconds that followed.

Kereama lamented his team’s slow start to the game.

“It is totally disappointing not to come away with a win. It’s pretty obvious to those that watched the game we were severely flat to start the game, we lacked energy. We invested a lot of emotional energy in the game the night before (against France) and had a very short turn around and recovery. We did everything we could to be ready to play but unfortunately it took us some time to get going. Once we managed to get going I feel like we ran out of time.”

Jillian Harmon was equally disappointed, “I agree with coach I thought we were pretty flat at the start as I think we had about 15 hours to turn around from last night’s game. We did really well to stay in it but we just ran out of time.”

Final Score:

Cuba 64 – Gelis 16, Casanova 11, Cepada 11

Tall Ferns 62 – Harmon 25pts/14rebs, Purcell 9pts/8rebs, Cocks 9pts/6assists, Davidson 8, Edmondson 7pts/6rebs/6assists, Paalvast 2, Beck 2Agony for Tall

Auckland Grammar beat Westlake Girls

123824-7944-14

First played second on the table in round 7 of the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier competition played on Monday. Westlake Girls High School hosted top of the table Auckland Girls Grammar School in the game of the round. And it was the visitors that took the honours winning 60-43.

Westlake was dealt a blow in the opening minute with Zara Jillings forced to the sideline with a badly sprained ankle.

Grammar profited from her departure leading by half a dozen points, at the mid point of the quarter but Westlake scored the last seven points of the period to lead 15-12 at the first break. Mele Latu logged 10 points for AGGS in the opening period.

AGGS began the second with a 6-0 start highlighted by a nice baseline drive from Tyla Tuala.

AGGS forward Elianna Tuaiti picked up her third foul as Rosie Davison made a difficult basket in traffic but AGS were 26-23 to the good.

A long two from Tuala stretched the visitors lead to 28-23 at half-time

AGGS began the third period with another run, this time 9-1 to lead 37-24 and force Lake coach Jody Cameron to call a timeout. Her team was struggling to manufacture many open scoring opportunities against an active AGGS zone.

A Davison basket plus a Tiarna Clarke three helped the Westlake cause but

Grammar was winning the rebounding battle and this was emphasised by an offensive rebound and put back by from Rionne Papa to give the visitors a 43-31 three-quarter time advantage.

A Clarke steal and layup followed by a Davison block and coast to coast basket reduced the deficit to 37-45 at the 6:57 mark prompting John Subritzky the Auckland coach to use a timeout.

Papa immediately restored the double-digit advantage despite Emme Shearer scoring in transition for the home side.

Back to back drives from Papa almost sealed the deal at 53-39 with 3:20 to play but and 1 play from Karma Skilton-Roberts with 90 seconds left certainly did.

A combination of strong rebounding and high percentage shooting, particularly from the foul line secured a seventh straight win from Auckland Girls Grammar.

Subritzky is delighted with the AGGS start to the season but admitted, “I’m very surprised with how we are doing. The girls are playing well as a team but I didn’t expect us to be unbeaten at this stage.”

Final Score; Westlake – 43 Davison 11, Shearer 11, Brodeur-Muir 8, Clarke 7. AGGS – 60 – Latu 16, Skilton-Robertr 13, Papa 12, Tuala 10, Elianna Tuaiti 9

Orewa College gained its second win of the season travelling to St Kentigern College and winning a tight one 74-69.

Crossing the Harbour Bridge must have taken its toll on the Orewa team as they found themselves 19-9 down at quarter time.

They recovered to trail by just two points at half-time and kept their composure in the second half after hitting the front. Katie Diakhaby – 37 points –had a monster game recording the highest individual score this season in the Girls competition.

Final Score: St Kent’s 69 Orewa 74 – Diakhaby 37, Hannah Wentworth 14 Arianna Henare 12,

Massey High School found it tough going at Mt Albert Grammar trailing 16-5 early on and 31-15 at half-time. Things improved a little in the second period but not enough to threaten a dominant MAGS performance.

Final Score: MAGS 64 Massey 37 – Shauna Povey 9, Sylvia Wieczorek 8pts/16rebs, Laticia Jost 6, Edynn Doreen 6

Rangitoto College defeated Avondale College 73-40 in an error ridden game.

The Rangitoto performance didn’t impress stand-in head coach Morgan Maskell who was unhappy with the performance of his charges.

“Right now we are playing the most casual basketball I have ever seen from a team on this level, we lack any sort of urgency.

“I’m confident we are capable of playing better and doing well at Nationals. However the game is played on the court not on paper so we have to up our game.”

Sounds like there is plenty to work on for Maskell and head coach Angela Perrott-Hunt.

Tall Ferns Scare France but Eventually Fall

Toni Edmondson h800.jpg

Toni Edmondson top scored against France

The Tall Ferns began its 2016 Olympic Qualifying Tournament campaign with a 70-52 loss against France in Nantes on Tuesday and now face a must win game against Cuba on Wednesday. (1.00am Thursday NZ time).

The Ferns put together a terrific opening half leading 29-27 against the world number four ranked French. Only down 52-46 at the three-quarter time mark, the Tall Ferns eventually ran out of steam losing the final stanza 18-6 in front of a raucous home crowd.

Penina Davidson made a statement on behalf of the Tall Ferns – blocking the first French scoring effort.

She could do nothing about a couple of shots that followed but Micaela Cocks tied the scores at five apiece with a triple and a brace of free throws.

Kalani Purcell scored off an in bounds play to edge the Kiwis ahead 9-8 and when Penina Davidson and Jillian Harmon made back to back baskets to give their team a 13-10 lead France called a timeout.

The Tall Ferns ended an impressive opening quarter with Josie Stockill nailing a pair of free throws to lead 17-16. The commentary team noted, “New Zealand looked impressive.”

France came out with more intent at the start of the second with big centre Isabelle Yacoubou making baskets and garnering offensive rebounds. Edmondson countered with a baseline triple to keep the Kiwis in touch, as did Chevannah Paalvast with a neat basket.

The defensive efforts of the Tall Ferns, both individually and collectively, was impressive and at the other end Stella Beck landed a long three to give the team in black a 29-27 half-time lead.

Davidson with a nice finger roll inside play opened the second half Tall Ferns scoring and Edmondson moved into double figures with a triple and pair of free throws as the scores were tied 40 points each at the mid point of the third.

Back to back baskets from France gave them the biggest lead since the opening moments of the game and coach Kennedy Kereama called a timeout to stall home team momentum.

Paalvast scored a nice back door basket off a Cocks pass and although trailing 52-46 at three-quarter time the Tall Ferns were well in the contest.

Yacoubou (19pts/11rebs) was proving the difference between the teams, her inside presence causing the Tall Ferns major problems and her back to back baskets extended the home advantage to double figures, 56-46.
From there the Tall Ferns offensive effort ground almost to a halt and, it was six minutes into the period before Stockill scored the Kiwi’s first points of the period as a brave challenge fell away, the Ferns going down 70-52.

Tall Ferns coach Kereama congratulated France on an excellent second half but felt his team went away from what was working in the first half.

“France were a lot bigger than us, they pounded it inside, we expected it, we prepared for it but we didn’t execute for 15 minutes of that game which was disappointing. Our focus now turns to Cuba who we believe, if we play as well as we did for 25 minutes and some of this game, we give ourselves a chance.

“We know if we play 40 minutes of basketball we give ourselves a chance against anybody. We know if we carry out our game plan and execute we can compete.”

Toni Edmondson felt French centre Yacoubou was the difference, “She was unstoppable, her offensive rebounding and her presence in there tonight was probably what decided the match.”

“I was really proud of our group for probably two thirds of that game. It was disappointing that we lapsed for about the last couple of minutes of the third quarter and they really stepped on us,” she said.

The Tall Ferns now have a short turn around having to face Cuba in a must win game just 18 hours later.

Final Score:

Westlake suffer first loss of the season

A number of teams were short handed in round 6 of the Auckland Secondary Schools Boys Prem competition due to New Zealand teams attending the Medibank Classic in Melbourne. In contrast Westlake Boys High School welcomed back Isaac Letoa from his trip to Kazakhstan with the NZ 3×3 Under 18 team.

Letoa showed no ill effects from the long trip scoring his team’s first three baskets as they opened up an early 8-2 lead at Rosmini College.

Rosmini replied with baskets from Nathan Curran and Taine Wattie to pull back to 8-6 five minutes in. Turnovers blighted the efforts of both teams in the period shaded by Westlake 16-15.

Reuben Fitzgerald scored three baskets in quick succession for Lake in the opening two minutes of the second period and when a third foul was called on Nathan Curran midway through the period things didn’t look so rosy for the hosts.

However Peter Jenkins stepped up admirably and with Mitchell Dance and Will Heather making triples Rosmini squeezed ahead 29-28

The lead didn’t last long as Letoa made a tough and one play in traffic, he led all scorers at the break with 17 points, Mitchell Dance the beast for Rosmini with a dozen.

Heather and Wattie were the first scores of second half before Letoa made yet another tough play.

The lead changed hands repeatedly in the third before a bench technical called on Westlake allowed Marvin Williams-Dunn a trip to the foul line to put Rozza ahead 48-44 at three-quarter time.

A Wattie triple early in the final period encouraged the raucous Faithful, the volume of support increasing for the home team with every Westlake error.

A neat Curran banked hook pushed the Rozza lead out to 56-49 prompting a Westlake time out with 4:49 left.

The breather worked as Thabo Manyere made back to back baskets; 60-53 to Rozza with 3:30 on the clock.

A Westlake press created a James Moors steal and basket but a Wattie layup kept the hosts ahead 64-56 with less than 2 minutes to play.

Ethan Martin made a neat basket but a Heather put back kept Rosmini ahead 67-58 with 1:15 to play.

Westlake were forced to foul to stop the clock availing Jordan Wilson the opportunity to calmly convert four consecutive free throws to ice the game and inflict on Westlake its first defeat of the season.

Final Score: Rosmini 71 (Dance 17, Wattie 10, Heather 10, Jenkins 8pts/9rebs, Wilson 8) Westlake 63 (Letoa 25pts/9rebs/6assists, Manyere 13/10, Fitzgerald 7)

Dan Fotu Rangitoto

Dan Fotu top scored for Rangitoto

Mt Albert Grammar School and Rangitoto College, both affected by unavailability of players fought out a close encounter on the north shore.

Michael Gardner scored 12 first quarter points for MAGS in an even first period that finished with Rangitoto 19-18 to the good. Rangi put the defensive clamps on the visitors in the second period and with Dan Fotu making 10 points in the half extended to a 35-26 lead at the main break.

MAGS outscored their hosts 16-13 in the third but couldn’t repeat the dose in the final quarter. Harrison Clarke nailed a three to open the Rangi effort in the fourth and Zac Te Puni made three consecutive baskets as they got the better of the final stanza, but only just, to record a 68-61 victory.

Final Score: Rangitoto 68 (Fotu 20, Zac Te Puni 11, Kaycee Anibueze 10, Harry Clarke 10) MAGS 61 (Gardner 22, John-Afi Stowers 12, Trent Kimiangatau 8, Jonty Vink 7pts/13rebs)

In round 6 of the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Girls competition Westlake Girls High School welcomed back Zara Jillings from her exploits at the FIBA 3 on 3 U18 World Championships where the NZ Women finished a highly creditable 5th losing just one game in the tournament.

Jillings and her team made a far from auspicious start in this one as a combination of missed shots and active Orewa College defence caused them some early problems.

Hannah Wentworth opened the scoring with a pair of free throws for Orewa with Rosie Davison opening the Westlake account followed by a Jillings three to help put Westlake ahead 16-6 at quarter time.

Wentworth also opened the scoring for the second period, a banked three followed by a Megan Hoore basket trimmed the Westlake advantage to single figures, 19-11, cut further after another Wentworth three.

Katie Diakhaby was contained well by the Westlake forwards but she scored the last two buckets of the half as Orewa trailed by just three points, 23-20, after a low scoring first half.

Both sides continued to struggle offensively at the outset of the second half before Jillings scored a pair of baskets answered by Diakhaby.

Hoore cancelled out a Tiarna Clarke basket as Orewa trailed just 31-26 with 5:06 left in the third.

Things then began to turn sour for Orewa as Emme Shearer scored back to back baskets following Chanel Broder-Muir steals.

Remarkably Orewa was called for just its second foul of the game late in the third to send Jordan Maddix to the charity stripe for a pair of freebies to increase the margin in favour of Westlake to 47-26 at threequarter time.

Westlake’s extended pressure, with Brodeur-Muir in dominant form, created a barrage of points in the fourth and they entirely dominated the remainder of the game going on to win 82-26 as Lake coach Jody Cameron gave extended court time to her young brigade.

Final Score: Westlake 82 (Brodeur-Muir 21 Davison 14, Jillings 11, Clarke 10, Piper Manolas 6) Orewa 26 (Wentworth 8, Diakhaby 8)

Mt Albert Grammar also recorded an away win travelling to Rangitoto College and leaving with a 73-63 victory. MAGS won the first quarter 23-21 as Sharne Robati and Trinity Paeu went to work.

Robyn Blackstock and Riana Rangi-Brown, who had 12 points in the second period, took Rangi to a 43-40 interval lead.

NZ Under 16 forward Robati continued to inflict damage on the home defence in the third as MAGS stole a 57-51 lead.

Rangi were kept to just 20 points in the second half as MAGS earned a notable road win.

Final Score: Rangitoto 63 (Rangi-Brown 19, Blackstock 14, Tabitha Jenkins 7, Annaline Crosbie 7) MAGS 73 (Robati 23, Paeu 20, Abigail Roache 9, Rhyannon Potu 8)

St Kentigern College secured its first win of the season defeating Massey High School 61-52.

St Kent’s was quick out the gate racing to a 16-4 quarter time lead and 28-17 at the break. Massey did there utmost to get back in the contest but it wouldn’t be enough despite a collective 35 points from Harmony Rangi-Brown and Shauna Povey.

St Kent’s Vilisi (sorry I don’t have full names for St Kent’s players) led all scorers with 23 points.

Final score: St Kent’s 61 (Vilisi 23, Summer 12, Courtney 7) Massey 52 (Rangi-Brown 18, Povey 17/8rebs, Sylvia Wieczorek 4/10rebs)

Spanish “Beast Awoken”.

2011 FIBA Oceania Championship

Micaela Cocks led the Tall Ferns scoring

In the words of New Zealand coach Kennedy Kereama, “The beast was awoken”, as Spain avenged yesterday’s defeat at the hands of the Tall Ferns to win 80-60 in Oviedo on Thursday.

The Tall Ferns started well landing five triples in the opening quarter courtesy of Micaela Cocks (twice), Penina Davidson, Jordan Hunter and Stella Beck to trail by just three points at quarter time, 20-17.

Smarting from their 54-52 defeat at the hands of the Tal Ferns the previous day, world number three ranked Spain made a telling run in the second period to lead 45-29 at half-time.

The third quarter was an even affair, a late Hunter triple keeping the Kiwis in touch, down 66-49 at the last break.

Any thought of another upset were snuffed out in the final period as the Ferns were kept to just 11 points, Spain easing to a twenty points win although Kereama felt the scoreline didn’t do justice to his team’s effort.

“Tonight’s margin was not a true reflection of how close the game was at different stages. I think Spain shot the ball tremendously, making tough contested shots; I don’t know if they will shoot that well again.

“I thought the game was pretty similar to yesterday in terms of our scores, they just made more trips to the foul line and shot a better percentage than we did.

“I am confident that we are performing well and in tune for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, the excitement is building for the most important part of our campaign.”

Micaela Cocks led the Kiwi scoring with 18 points and there were good contributions off the bench from Beck and Hunter but the usually reliable Toni Edmondson only managed two points although the Cantabrian did dish a game high 6 assists.

Davidson and Jillian Harmon, the only other Kiwi to score double figures, helped ensure the rebounding count was even and there was good production off the bench from Beck and Hunter as the Tall Ferns gave another good account of themselves in there final game ahead of the Olympic Qualifying tournament next week.

Final Score;

Spain 80

Tall Ferns 60 – Cocks 18, Harmon 10pts/5rebs, Davidson 7/7rebs, Paalvast 6, Hunter 6, Beck 5, Purcell 4, Edmondson 2 + 6 assists, Wallbutton 2

Tall Ferns beat Spain and eye further success

DSC6140

14pts and 10rebs from Jillian Harmon helped Tall Ferns overcome Spain

The Tall Ferns tore up the form book on Wednesday in Gijon beating Spain, the number three ranked team in the world, 54-52.

This was a significant result for the Kiwis just days out from the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in France next week. It was the type of game, a defensive arm wrestle, that the Ferns need to lock into if they are to enjoy success next week and beyond.

Not blessed with outstanding scorers low scoring contests, keeping teams to 60 points or below is the route to success for this group, a team that possesses a number of lock-down defenders.

France on their home court in Nantes next week will be tough, maybe too tough, but Cuba the next day is now looking more intriguing. The fixture has taken on a completely different picture with not only the success against Spain but also the fact that Cuba were hammered 83-40 by the Spaniards three days ago.

Spain scored the first 5 points of the game but then the Tall Ferns, courtesy of scores from Jillian Harmon, Micaela Cocks, Penina Davidson and Toni Edmondson reeled off 10 straight points to lead 15-9 at quarter time.

Threes from Cocks and Chevannah Paalvast in the second period helped keep the Ferns in the ascendancy at half time leading 27-22.

The forward trio of Davidson, Paalvast and Harmon accumulated 25 rebounds to give the Kiwis parity on the boards and with Paalvast, promoted to the starting five, nailing 6 points in the third period the lead was extended to 43-32 at three-quarter time.

As expected Spain came surging back in the final quarter but a brace of triples from Cocks and Edmondson kept the Ferns in front and although Edmondson fouled out the Tall Ferns held on to take a notable scalp ahead of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in France next week.

The two teams meet again tomorrow, the last game for each team ahead of the OQT.

Naturally Tall Ferns head coach Kennedy Kereama was very satisfied with the performance of his team.

“I am really proud of our efforts today to beat third ranked Spain. It was a true defensive job and all players were locked in and focused for fourty minutes.

“ These moments are pretty special but it only lasts a short time because we have to back up and play them again tomorrow. We need to show that this was no fluke and we can also improve on this game. We need to grind teams down with our defence and keep teams to low scores if we want to compete with the best.

“All the players were great today and its hard to single anyone out, it was a true team effort.”

Final Score;

Spain 52

Tall Ferns 54 – Harmon 14pts/10rebs, Cocks 12, Davidson 9/8, Paalvast 9/8, Edmondson 7, Beck 1, Rooney 1, Purcell 1

Spirited performance by NZ Select v China

Charlotte

Charlotte Whittaker showed composure beyond her years

The second of two games featuring New Zealand Select and China B was played at AUT Sports Centre on Monday night. Once again the Chinese proved too strong for the Select team running out comfortable winners 84-51.

New Zealand added 17 year old Junior Tall Fern Tiarna Clarke to the team that played the first game but used the same starting five of Janet Main, Brooke Blair and the Canterbury Wildcats trio of Ashley Gayle, Shea Crotty and Charlotte Whittaker.

15 year old Whittaker scored the first couple of baskets for NZ Select but they quickly found themselves 15-4 down, coach Jody Cameron calling a timeout after 4 minutes.

Things didn’t improve greatly as the Chinese displayed excellent shooting efficiency converting 12 from 15 shots in the first quarter to lead 29-10.

Gayle made four points at the outset of the second period and Mary Goulding helped the defensive intensity of the Kiwis. Clarke knocked down a jump shot immediately after her introduction but the Kiwis were finding points hard to come by and trailed 50-22 at half-time, Whittaker the best of the Kiwis with 6 points.

In the half China had been damaging from beyond the three point arc connecting with 4 from 5 attempts and shooting an impressive 66% overall.

An attempted dunk from Ashley Gail failed to find the net whilst at the other end China continued to hit from long range extending its lead to 62-26 at the mid point of the third stanza.

Clarke showed a glimpse of her potential with a shimmy to open the lane for a banked floater but getting good looks at the basket remained an issue for the home team trailing 73-36 at three-quarter time.

10381010

Shea Crotty sunk three from four three point attempts

Shea Crotty drew applause from the crowd with a pair of long triples and a Fran Edmondson put back gave the Select team some scoring momentum. Edmondson then followed up her own block for a break away layup and Crotty nailed her third three as the Kiwis finished a tough night on a positive note by winning the final period 15-11.

NZ Select coach Jody Cameron was pleased with the effort of her team.

“Our experienced guards really set the tone by playing with great heart and competing on every play. Also our youngsters, we had four teenagers in the team, showed glimpses of their potential.

“I like the concept of the Select team as it gives a wider group of players the experience of playing international basketball and I hope this can be repeated in the future.

“The result has to be put into perspective. We had a group of amateur players playing with two practices before the first game and China had a professional team that had been together for three months. Despite that our team played with a lot of spirit in both games.”

Final Score:

China 84

NZ Select 51 – Gayle 10pts/4rebs/4 steals, Crotty 9, Edmondson 8, Whittaker 8pts/4rebs, Clarke 6, Jodi Hikuroa-Jeffrey 4, Goulding 3pts/6rebs, Main 2pts/4rebs, Terai Sadler 1pt/5rebs

Important W’s for MAGS and Rosmini

Michael Gardner (No 10) has been in fine form for MAGS this season

There were a couple of one sided affairs in the fifth round of the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Boys competition on Friday as winless Liston College and Onehunga slipped to 0-5. In other games Mt Albert Grammar won the battle of the two promoted teams and Rosmini College got its season back on track with a win at Auckland Grammar.

A Thabo Manyere transition dunk and penetration from livewire guards Marc Malingin and Josh Hildago helped open up a 12-5 Westlake Boys High School lead before an eye catching drive through traffic from Blessing Matambanadzo (surely the coolest name in Prem basketball) dragged Liston back into the contest.

Baskets either side of the quarter time break from Scott Telfer extended the Westlake lead to 29-12 before a transition basket from Emmanuel Maagdenberg encouraged Liston.

Maagdenberg and Lev Prokefyeu worked tirelessly under the hoop for the visitors but they endured a heavy workload as Westlake continually attacked the offensive boards. Reuben Fitzgerald (10pts) led all scorers at the interval, Westlake in the ascendency 56-24.

Liston opened the second half with a 14-7 run causing Westlake coach Phil Campbell enough concern to call a timeout. Matambanadzo kept the momentum going for Liston with a couple of fast break baskets and when Kim Estonactor converted a high arching jump shot the visitors had logged 20 points in 6 minutes. James Moors restored a semblance of order with a couple of quick baskets, his team 79-46 to the good with 10 minutes to play.

The final quarter was a formality as Westlake, with seven players in double figures, ran out 101-60 winners. Despite the scoreline Liston, to their credit, continued to compete up to the final whistle.

Final Score:

Westlake 101 – Moors 16, Greg Vukets 15, Telfer 12/11rebs, Ethan Martin 12

Mt Albert Grammar won the battle of the two promoted teams beating Kelston Boys 88-66. Michael Gardner paced the MAGS effort with 28 points (11/21FG) to take his team to their third win of the campaign.

Kelston had the better of the third period cutting the deficit to 10 points, 66-56, before MAGS moved clear in the fourth.

Rosmini College visited Auckland Grammar with the formbook pointing towards a home team victory but the Rozza boys had other thoughts and came away with a 97-79 win.

Rosmini got on top early with some full court defence that forced numerous turnovers from the home side, to lead 28-20 at the first break with Will Heather claiming 9 points.

AGS bounced back in the second quarter as Tuki Fahrensohn and Rua Winitana became more involved but they still trailed 51-43 at half-time.

Rosmini continued to prosper after the break as a double dose of double doubles from Kruz Perrott-Hunt (11pts/10rebs) and Nathan Curran (13pts/11rebs) extended the advantage.

A spot of chair throwing from frustrated AGS coach Manu Hoque, resulting in a technical foul, didn’t help the home cause. Rosmini guard Mitchell Dance helped himself to 15 points in the last quarter as his team eased to the win.

Final Score:

AGS 79 – Fahrensohn 29, Winitana 26, Connor Flannagan 10

Rosmini 97 – Dance 27, Taine Wattie 17, Heather 15, Curran 13/11, Perrott-Hunt 11/10

Unfortunately Onehunga High School arrived at Rangitoto with just five players and although Rangi rested a number of front line players the score still blew out to a lopsided 129-35 in favour of the home side. J Tufuga managed 24 of Onehunga’s points but it is to be hoped he finds a little more support in future games.

For Rangitoto Harrison Clarke scored 22 points with Logan Anderson (20pts), Zac Te Puni (19pts) and Kaycee Anibueze (18pts) the other main contributors.

Tiarna Clarke gets a jump shot off for the Junior Tall Ferns against USA Select

Westlake Girls High School entertained Massey High School in round 5 of the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier encounter on Friday. Both sides struggled to find the basket in the early stages and it took over 4 minutes before Terina Aratangi slotted home a pair of free throws to give Massey the lead. Chanel Brodeur-Muir opened the Westlake account, her team just ahead 9-5 at quarter time.

A classy drive from Tiarna Clarke opened the second quarter scoring for the home side but a couple of transition baskets from Shauna Povey plus a freebie tied the scores 13-13 at the 4 minute mark in the period. Rosie Davidson and Sia Talafoa led a 10-3 run as Westlake closed the half 23-16 to the good.

Back to back baskets from Davison stretched the Westlake advantage to 29-16 and when Clarke added another bucket Massey coach Sheryl Paalvast called a timeout. Sylvia Wieczorek responded with a basket and a block but three’s from Clarke and Brodeur-Muir helped stretch the Lake advantage to 45-23 at three-quarter time.

A succession of turnovers and errors from both sides marred the start of the final quarter before Jordyn Maddix and Clarke, off a nice Keeley Tini assist, got the scoreboard ticking again.

Emme Shearer went coast to coast as the Westlake lead stretched beyond 40 points before Aratangi and Povey scored consolation points for Massey as they eventually fell 75-27.

Westlake coach Jody Cameron, on international duty preparing the New Zealand Select team for their two games against China over Queens Birthday weekend, will be delighted her team bounced back to winning ways after the loss to Rangitoto College last week.

Final Score;

Westlake 75 – Clarke 21, Davison 13, Brodeur-Muir 11, Piper Manolas 6

Massey 27 – Povey 12, Aratangi 6 Wieczorek 2/10rebs

The only other game played last week resulted in a comprehensive win for Mt Albert Grammar School over Avondale College but unfortunately I don’t know the actual score
