2013 Age Group National Championships Reviewed

With the 2013 National age group championships now complete it’s worth reflecting on who the Championship winners were.

North Harbour collected four trophies, Waitakere West Auckland two and four other associations collected one piece of silverware each including Hibiscus Coast, winners of their first ever national championship.

Waikato were the ‘almost association’ finishing runners-up in no less than 5 of the 10 championships. They along with North Harbour were the only two associations to record top ten finishes in all five tournaments, male and female.

National Championship Winners;

4 North Harbour (U23 Men and Women, U15 Boys, U13 Women)
2 Waitakere West Auckland (Under 19 Women and Under 17 Girls)
1 Hibiscus Coast (U13 Boys)
1 Rotorua (Under 15 Girls)
1 Otago (Under 17 Boys)
1 Hutt Valley (Under 19 Men)

Clearly the strength of age group basketball lies in the Auckland region – not surprising given the population base – seven of the ten winners came from the greater Auckland region.

I have put together a rudimentary points table below reflecting the overall success of the associations.

The scoring system is based on rewarding the top ten finishers in each age group (1st = 10pts, 2nd = 9pts down to 10th = 1 point).

74 North Harbour
70 Waikato
64 Waitakere West Auckland
