The SKY CITY Breakers hosted their first media conference of the new season today, so whatdid we learn? Judging by the number of press in attendance, interest in the SKY CITY Breakers certainly hasn’t diminished in the off season. New point guard Kerron ‘KJ’ Johnson is listed as 6’ 1” and 170lbs in his bio. He looks every bit as small as that. The diminutive 22 year old from Florida with his soft voice and warm smile was an instant hit with the media. If he debuts on court as well as he did on the sideline he will be a big hit. Darnell Lazare showed off his oral skills as well, trotting out the usual clichés about doing everything he can to help the team win. He sounds and looks like a seasoned pro. New head coach Dean Vickerman looked and sounded like a seasoned pro! It’s what he is, having served six years as assistant to Lemanis. He still looks and sounds like a kid with a new toy – eager give it a go. Everyone wishes him well. Daryl Corletto has been given a two year extension to his contract. The move guarantees stability in the senior leadership within the team especially with CJ Bruton stepping aside at the end of this season. It’s possible that 2014-15 could be the first season the Breakers only have one Australian on the team. Jarrod Kenny has joined the club for the season as a non contracted player. As in 2011-12, Jarrod will train full time with the team but only be eligible to play if a contracted player is sidelined with a long term injury. The Brian Goorjian coached, Chinese club side Dongguan Leopards will be taking on the SKY CITY Breakers in three pre season games during late September and early October. A reporter and photographer from the most visited Chinese website in NZ, skykiwi.com was present at the press conference indicating the Leopards may have sizeable support at Vector Arena on October 3rd. Another exciting SKY CITY Breakers season is almost upon us – can’t wait.
