Baradene College recorded a deserved 72-66 win against Westlake Girls High, in an entertaining encounter played on Saturday afternoon.

Having won the first encounter by 12 points Westlake remain top of the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier League table on points differential and will meet Epsom Girls Grammar in one semi-final next Friday. The other matchup will be between St Mary’s College and Baradene. 

Ritorya Tamilo (24 points) produced an outstanding performance for Baradene. Her 8 first quarter points were a signal of what was to come as she dominated the paint, and demonstrated a variety of scoring moves to compliment her rebounding prowess.

Westlake had made a sluggish start but when Mackenzie Chatfield gave them their first lead of the game (20-18), early in the second half, they were gaining the upper hand.

Simone Barnard’s three gave Lake a 10-point advantage but Deyna Topia’s timely triple meant Baradene were only down 47-40 at half-time.

Baradene started the second half strongly and when Lily Parke found nothing but nylon the scores were level at 53 points apiece. Tamilo’s inside work propelled Baradene to a 58-55 three-quarter time lead.

Barnard’s three and a two from Amy Pateman made it a 4-point game heading into the final minutes.

A couple of buckets from Chatfield kept Westlake in the hunt but Topia settled the contest with a game clinching pair of threes and Amelia Nathan iced the contest with a neat jump shot.

In the tussle between the third and fourth placed teams St Mary’s College edged Epsom Girls 74-71.

Flo Dallow, Sarah-Joy Aruwa and Draun Forbes propelled Epsom to a 53-50 three-quarter time lead.

However the hosts were outscored 24-18 in the fourth as Kodee Sefo scored 10 points and Kat Leslie made key free throws to see St Mary’s home ahead of their semi-final clash with Baradene. Alex Moore and and Danika Moore were also prominent for St Mary’s.

Massey High won a high scoring encounter with Carmel College 91-90.

Carmel enjoyed the better start leading 25-22 at the quarter break and 48-47 at half-time.

 Despite Allyah Leusogi-Ape scoring 16 points in the third the Massey lead was only 71-69 with ten minutes to play.

Skipper Katie Linstrom, playing her final game for Carmel, went out on a high. She amassed  a career high 38 points and with Ruby Railton, Jemma Cammell and Hannah Bellett producing strong hands Carmel remained in the contest until the finish. 

In the end 35 points from Leusogi-Ape and 17 apiece from Tahlya Waikiki and Maya Taingahue saw Massey across the line for the win.

Mt Albert Grammar proved too good for Rangitoto College winning 95-62 with Waimanu Clarken and Tiger-Lily Cocker-Lemalie combining for almost 50 points.

Valana Pupuke-Robati, Jersey Nukunuku and Breanna Waku also made handy contributions as MAGS recorded their fifth win of the season. 

Aroha Riley scored a game high 31 points with Tamsin McAsey and Emily Blyth both in double figures for Rangitoto.

The lineup for next week’s Auckland Secondary Schools Boy’s Premier League semi-finals has been finalised following the completion of the final round of the regular season.

With Westlake Boys crushing St Kentigern College (94-55) and Auckland Grammar completing a comfortable win against Rosmini (93-60) there was a three-way tie for second spot on the ladder behind clear leaders Rangitoto College. 

Westlake, AGS and St Kent’s all finished with a 10-4 record but after the big loss on Friday night St Kent’s points differential took a hammering and they will now meet Rangi in one semi-final with Lake and AGS meeting in the other.

When St Kentigern coach Aaron Young took a timeout two minutes into the contest at Westlake you sensed it could be a long night for the East Auckland outfit. They managed just 6 points in the opening quarter as Westlake rattled up a 19 point lead.

Caleb Mattison and Kazlo Evans provided St Kent’s with the ideal start to the second quarter but hopes of a revival were quickly snuffed out by Christian Martin and Rocco Chang as the hosts surged to a 52-22 half-time lead.

St Kent’s agony was prolonged in the middle of the third by a fire alarm evacuation and things didn’t get any easier on the resumption as Boston Caldwell and Hamza Zahran added to St Kent’s woes.

Auckland Grammar rode an outstanding first half display from Caleb Landon to set up the win against Rosmini College.

The rangy forward, relentless on the offensive boards, piled on 25 points and a succession of rebounds as Grammar eased to a 44-30 interval lead.

Tom Beattie scored 16 of his 27 points in the third but Toby Caldwell and Luka Vea kept Grammar in the ascendancy – the hosts ahead 68-48 at the last break.

The lead blew out in the third with Liam Ward, to the delight of the home supporters, nailing a couple of long threes to cap a commanding display from Lindsay Tait’s boys.

Rangitoto College, the regular season champions, didn’t find it easy going at Mt Albert Grammar but did eventually prevail 67-63.

MAGS led 14-12 at quarter time but were outscored 22-12 in the second period.

Rangi extended their advantage to 52-39 at three-quarter time before MAGS mounted a spirited comeback in the fourth.

Harri Coker-Grey began the revival, Phoenix Sorensen added a triple with Dante Matakatea adding further momentum.

Zach Riley and Zeke Priest steadied the ship for Rangi, the pair scoring 13 of their combined 40 points in the closing minutes.

Rangi were bolstered by the appearance of Tautoko Wynyard after a long absence through injury. Playing his first game in almost two years he got through almost 13 minutes of action scoring 6 points and snaring 8 rebounds in a welcome return to action.

Jack Donnelly scored 38 points for St Peter’s supported by Scott Errey and Jacob Nola.

Rasheed Ieremia’s (22 points) topped the Liston effort with Dhon Lao chipping in with 10.

Shout out to coaches Mikey Graham and Benny Anthony Jnr, and their players, for competing throughout a challenging season for both teams.

The Auckland Secondary Schools Girl’s Premier League regular season title will be decided in the final round when Westlake entertain Baradene College on Saturday afternoon.

Baradene College dominated Massey High School to win 85-47. A 17-10 quarter time lead became 47-19 by the break.

Allyah Leusogi-Ape topped the Massey scoring with 17 points.

Ritorya Tamilo (21 points) led the Baradene scoring as her team warmed up nicely for the Westlake encounter on Saturday.

Massey will face Carmel College in the relegation game on Friday.

Carmel College were defeated 95-48 by St Mary’s College in their penultimate game of the season.

Jemma Cammell was again outstanding scoring half of Carmel’s points but St Mary’s had too much firepower and didn’t look back after securing a 29-10 quarter time lead.

Kodee Sefu (27 points) and Alex Moore (20 points) led the way for St Mary’s that wrapped up third spot on the ladder with the victory.

Epsom Girls, having already wrapped up the fourth semi-final berth were given a tough time at Mt Albert Grammar before prevailing 65-60.

Draun Forbes, on her way to a game high 23 points, scored a dozen in the opening spell as Epsom forged a 23-13 lead.

A couple of threes from Danae Tait plus buckets from Waimanu Clarken helped MAGS reverse the momentum to lead 33-30 at the half.

The third was a close battle with Forbes and Flo Dallow edging Epsom back into the lead, albeit by the narrowest of margins (46-45).

Tiger-Lily Cocker-Lemalie and Ana-Rachel Enari scored 5 points apiece for MAGS in the final period but that was bettered Sarah-Joy Aruwa’s 7 points and Dallow’s 6 as Epsom prevailed.

MAGS will entertain Rangitoto on Friday, with the winners claiming fifth spot on the League table.

In the penultimate round of the season Rangitoto College wrapped up the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier League regular season title with a 96-80 home win against Westlake Boys on Monday night.

A high scoring opening period saw Rangi establish a 29-21 lead before breaking the game open with a 27-15 second term to lead by 20 at the break.

The Z-attack of Zeke Priest and Zach Riley did most the damage accumulating a collective 57 points.

Riley is in a rich run of form at the moment, his 37 points in this game following on from 30 against Rosmini on Friday.

Boston Caldwell , Rocco Chang and Christian Martin were the leading scorers for Westlake on a night when they were second best.

St Kentigern College broke clear of the three-way tie for second spot with a hard fought 79-76 home win against Auckland Grammar.

If Zach Riley is in great scoring form for Rangitoto the same can be said for St Kentigern guard Kazlo Evans. Playing his final game on his home court the Year 13 guard scored 34 against Grammar after nailing 41 three days earlier against St Peter’s.

With Jamal Todd and Caleb Landon scoring freely Grammar opened up a 16 points lead and were still well placed at half-time with a 44-32 advantage.

That lead evaporated in the third as St Kent’s piled on 25 points – Kaea Rangihaeata scored 6 but it was Evans with 17 in the frame that inflicted most of the damage.

Ahead 57-55 with 10 minutes to play Toby Caldwell, Landon and Todd did their best to wrestle back the initiative for AGS.  However, in a tight final period, St Kent’s held firm with George Turner and Merrick Rillstone making some key plays. 

St Kent’s will travel to Westlake on Friday knowing a win will keep them in second spot on the Premier ladder.

Rosmini College, with 27 points from Tom Beattie, some high jinx from Matt Drury and first Premier League field goals from Julius Halaifonua saw off Liston College 95-59.

In one of the highest individual scoring efforts in recent times St Peter’s College guard Jack Donnelly scored 51 points in a 97-89 loss to Mt Albert Grammar.

A balanced scoring effort led by Aki Luamanuvae-Sua and Morgan Aiono had MAGS ahead 58-46 at half-time. However Donnelly was relentless, his 18 third quarter points narrowed the deficit to 74-68 at the three-quarter mark.

It was end-to-end in the fourth but 6 points each from Will Leger and Phoenix Sorensen got MAGS home.

St Peter’s face Liston in the relegation game on Friday – having won the round 7 clash 102-64 they do have that +38 points differential to fall back on should they lose.

In Boy’s Secondary Schools Senior A League results Sacred Heart gained a valuable 59-45 home win against Aorere College. 

Northcote were convincing 108-61 winners against Massey High – Dontaye Sowman-Faaee and Aaron Sievert amassing 61 points between them.

The results mean Sacred Heart are in a two-way tussle with Northcote for the regular season runners-up spot.

At the other end of the table Macleans College moved out of the bottom two with a narrow 78-72 home win against Long Bay College.

The Auckland Secondary Schools Girl’s Premier League regular season title looks as if it will be decided in the final round when Westlake will entertain Baradene College after both teams secured wins on Friday.

Mackenzie Chatfield (17 points) top scored as Westlake cruised to the win at Mt Albert Grammar, dominating proceedings throughout to record an 87-40 victory.

Baradene had a more challenging fixture but eventually proved too good for Epsom Girls Grammar winning 77-62.

Baradene were paced by a career high 31 points from forward Ritorya Tamilo and an equally important 25 points from Deyna Topia.

The pair scored all of Baradene’s first 22 points as they forged a 32-25 half-time lead.

Epsom responded well in the third courtesy of Flo Dallow and Sarah Joy Aruwa but facing a 51-42 three-quarter time deficit they were unable to exert further pressure on the home defence.

Outscored 23-9 in the opening quarter Massey High more than held their own in the remaining 30 minutes but that initial deficit was too great to overcome against St Mary’s.

A decisive third quarter carried Rangitoto to a 68-47 home win against Carmel College.

Leading by six points at half-time (33-27), Rangitoto dominated the third period. 10 points from Aroha Riley, on her way to a team high 27, took the hosts out to an unassailable 54-35 advantage.

Carmel guard Jemma Cammell, with 28 points, was outstanding in a losing cause.

St Peter’s College looked as if they would cause a major upset when, coming from behind, Jack Donnelly tied proceedings at 82 points apiece with under two minutes to play against St Kentigern.

Donnelly (23 points) and Andrei Manio scored again for St Peter’s but Merrick Rillstone made a crucial bucket and Kazlo Evans held his nerve at the free throw line – St Kent’s escaping with a narrow 92-88 win.

Evans, on his way to a game winning 41 points, made six free throws down the stretch as Russo-Nance less St Kent’s breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Rangitoto College all but wrapped up the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier League regular season title with a comfortable 97-77 home win against Rosmini College.

Rosmini’s defeat also confirms Westlake, Auckland Grammar and St Kentigern as the other semi-finalists in the upcoming Premier League play-offs.

An 8-0 opening burst from Rangitoto set the tone in a game where the hosts held a comfortable margin throughout.

Ethan Skelton (22 points) and Zach Riley (30 points) were the star turns as Rangi recorded win number 11.

Rosmini trailed 19-11 at quarter time but were undone by a Riley masterclass in the second.

The Sal’s NBL Young Player of the Year knocked down four triples on his way to 17 second quarter points. With Zoran Sladoja landing a corner three on the stroke of half-time Rangi were well placed at 55-30.

Tom Beattie and Matt Drury led the Rosmini resistance in the second half although a serious assault on the Rangi advantage never looked likely.

A second quarter onslaught by Westlake Boys set up a decisive 94-70 victory at Mt Albert Grammar School, the visitors winning the period 30-15 after edging the first 20-18.

Boston Caldwell and Christian Martin were the chief destroyers for Lake. Caldwell scored 12 of his 27 points (5/9 3PG) in the second, with Martin making 15 of his 26 in the third.

MAGS made a bright start through Morgan Aiono and Aki Luamanuvae-Sua but struggled for parity thereafter.

Westlake travel to Rangitoto College on Monday hoping to avenge a narrow 98-92 loss suffered earlier in the season.

Both the Mt Roskill Girls and Boys teams secured important victories on Friday.

In Round 11 of the Auckland Secondary Schools Girl’s Senior A competition Mount Roskill Girls caused a surprise by beating previously unbeaten St Kentigern College 56-51

St Kent’s led 37-36 at three-quarter time but 7 points from Tikara Jallow, on her way to a game high 20 points, plus triples from Petra Chanchui and Melinda Sauaga tilted a tight game in favour of Mt Roskill.

Boy’s Senior A Results

In the top of the table clash Mt Roskill Grammar took a giant step towards sealing the regular season title with a 64-53 win against nearest rivals Sacred Heart College.

After a tight first half it was a decisive third quarter that separated the teams with Sacred Heart outscored 26-11 in the period.

Race Greig and Kennedy Matenga, with a combined 36 points, secured the win for Roskill.

On the back of 24 points from Slade Bronkhorst-Nalder and 21 from Aaron Sievert, with 7 made threes, Northcote comfortably defeated Macleans College 102-64. The win moves Northcote to equal second on the ladder alongside Sacred Heart.

Baradene College confirmed a semi-final berth in Round 11 of the Auckland Secondary Schools Girl’s Premier League on Friday with an 87-58 win at Rangitoto College.

A couple of baskets from Tamsin McAsey helped Rangitoto keep pace with the visitors in the first quarter.

The trio of Ritorya Tamilo, Lilly Parke and Harriet Burrell scored 6 points apiece in the second quarter as Baradene moved to a 48-29 half-time lead.

Aroha Riley and Kellie Tawhaio scored all of Rangitoto’s 17 points in the third quarter with all but one basket made from beyond the arc.

Baradene didn’t need to fire from three-point land – 10 points in the third from Tamilo extended the visitors lead to almost thirty and win number 10 was in the bag.

Mt Albert Grammar put together a strong second half display to record a 79-51 road win at Carmel College.

It was 13 points each after the first period and still even at 22 apiece four minutes into the second.

Hannah Bellett gave Carmel the lead but it was extinguished just prior to the half-time break as captain Tiger-Lily Coker-Lemalie scored six points on the bounce to take MAGS to a 36-32 half-time lead.

Katie Linstrom and Jemma Cammell scored on the resumption before MAGS went on to dominate the remainder of the third. Waimanu Clarken scored some eye catching baskets, Zara Pitovao and Danae Tait pitched in with a couple of buckets apiece, and suddenly MAGS were 59-44 to the good.

Ruby Railton gave the home fans something to cheer in the fourth but Clarken worked her way to a game high 25 points to help seal the win.

Four days earlier Epsom Girls had recorded an 11-point win but on Friday Massey High turned the tables to record a 99-94 away victory in a remarkably high scoring game.

Two players stood out as they amassed a collective 94 points!

Flo Dallow scored 45 points in a losing cause while Allyah Leusogi-Ape amassed 49 points for Massey. 

If spectators thought the first half was high scoring – Massey led 45-34 – carnage followed.

Maya Taingahue scored 14 points in the third period as Massey looked home and hosed with a 72-55 lead at three-quarter time.

The hosts mounted a massive rear-guard effort scoring 39 points in the final 10 minutes as Dallow, Sarah-Joy Aruwa, Maya Fowler and Draun Forbes piled in the points.

With 3:22 to play Epsom had almost erased the 17-point deficit trailing by just 4 points (88-84) and a massive comeback victory looked a possibility.

However Leusogi-Ape was proving almost unstoppable and with Erima Tuita making a couple of crucial scores Massey held on for an important win as they fight for Premier League survival.

Epsom will look to regroup in order to confirm a semi-final berth when the final three rounds of the regular season resume after the school holidays.
