Harmon and Lucca lose important game

5

Le Mura Lucca are in danger of relinquishing top spot on the Italian League table after suffering a 74-61 defeat at the hands of defending champions Famila Schio on Wednesday night. Lucca lost to Schio in the Italian Cup final last month and a win against their arch rivals would have secured the regular season title for Lucca. However they trailed at every interval in the game falling to just their third league defeat of the season.

Jillian Harmon was forced to spend time on the bench in the second half after picking up a fourth foul but still mustered 20 points, 8 points and a brace of assists in 31 minutes.

The Tall Ferns forward was one of just two Lucca players in double figures on the night.

The top four teams will play each other at the weekend in the final regular season fixtures. Lucca (18-3) will travel to fourth placed San Martino (15-6) whilst Schio (17-4) entertain Venezia who have the same (17-4) win/loss record.

The top three spots are still up for grabs ahead of the play-offs. By my reckoning Lucca hold the head to head over Venezia but not Schio. Therefore they need to topple San Martino at the weekend and hope Venezia can overturn Schio in order to take the number one ranking into the play-offs.

Kenny and ‘Cats’ keep title

Jarrod Kenny was the last Kiwi standing in Australia after Perth Wildcats emphasised their play-off supremacy to sweep Illawarra Hawks 3-0 in the best of five NBL Grand Final series. Perth retained its title with a 95-86 victory on Sunday on the back of a stunning 45 points from import Bryce Cotton. The win extends Perth’s record number of championships to eight.

Kenny joins a select band of Kiwis that have won two Australian NBL titles. The former Westlake Boys stand out doesn’t produce stunning numbers for the Wildcats, he scored just two points in game three, but he fills his role as back up to captain Damian Martin in style. An unselfish facilitator and resilient defender Kenny is the perfect foil to the ‘Cats’ talisman and has played a significant part in Perth’s success over the past two seasons.

Perth Lynx were unable to duplicate the men’s success as they exited the Women’s National Basketball League play-offs at the semi-final stage in a tie also played on Sunday

Having levelled the three game series in Perth on Friday the Lynx were looking to return to the final having finished runners-up last season. It was not to be as they were defeated 81-63 by Dandenong Rangers.

Tall Ferns guard Toni Edmondson again had the ice cold shooting hand, going zero from four – having shot 2 of 12 on Friday. The Cantabrian did accumulate 6 rebounds but the Lynx will now have to lick their wounds and prepare for the 2017/18 season, as Dandenong go on the face Sydney University Flames in the Grand Final.

Harmon goes down in Italian Cup Final and Abercrombie debuts in Turkey

A day after arriving in Turkey Thomas Abercrombie took the court for his new club Demir IBB – which is a lot quicker to write than Demir Insaat Buyukcekmece Basketball club. The Tall Blacks and Breakers swingman shook off some of his jet lag by coming off the bench to score 7 points (3/4FG) in 13 minutes of action but Demir, 13th on the Turkish League ladder, were comfortably beaten by 4th placed Banvit BK 89-65.

Also beaten at home by higher placed opposition was Zaragoza in the Spanish League. Isaac Fotu produced his third double double of the season and his highest rebound tally – 17 points / 12 rebounds – but it wasn’t enough to prevent Zaragoza going down 99-88 to Baskonia. Zaragoza with a 7-14 record is slipping towards a relegation battle after this latest defeat.

In the Spanish third division Sammic ISB jumped back to the top of the table with a 72-67 victory against Zamorano. Canterbury Rams forward Mike Karena continued his good form with 12 points and 9 rebounds for Sammic that now boast a 16-6 record.

In Italy Le Mura Lucca was defeated by rivals Famila Schio 88-60 in the Italian Women’s Cup Final played in Venice at the weekend.

Lucca trailed by just a point at half-time 31-30 and the same margin at the end of the third (53-52) but with free scoring Tall Ferns forward Jillian Harmon held to just 6 points it was blitzed 35-8 in the last quarter.

The two teams meet again in a fortnight in league action.

Erin Rooney has averaged 20 minutes a game across her first 7 appearances for Artego Bydgoszcz in the Polish League. Artego are 6-1 since the Cantabrian’s arrival in early January and now sit 5th on the league table with a 13-7 record after their latest victory, a nail biting 85-83 win against close rivals Gorzow Wielkopoiski. Artego dished an impressive 22 assists in the encounter with Rooney contributing 4 of those as well as 4 points.

Then there were Four

And then there were four!

Four Kiwis remain active in the Australian National Basketball leagues, men’s and women’s, – two in Perth and two in Townsville. Jarrod Kenny and Toni Edmondson are flying the flag out west whilst Micaela Cocks and Chevannah Paalvast are doing the same in North Queensland.

Jarrod Kenny will be the sole Kiwi representative in Australian NBL play-off basketball. The Tall Blacks guard played an important part in Perth’s two victories over the weekend. In the pivotal game on Sunday Kenny scored 8 points, including a couple of long threes, as the defending champions accounted for Melbourne 96-94 and in the process eliminated the Breakers.

Neither Reuben Te Rangi nor Dion Prewster, the two other Kiwis with Australian clubs, will be in play-off action as Brisbane and Sydney failed to finish in the top four. Prewster, in what has been a disappointing season for the Nelson Giants bound guard, scored two points, as Sydney Kings were thumped 101- 74 in Perth.

Te Rangi managed 4 points, a rebound and three assists but the injury ravaged Bullets were no match for Illawarra Hawks going down 106-79. Te Rangi will now return to NZ and link up with the Southland Sharks.

The WNBL play-off race is down to five teams with one round of the regular season remaining next weekend.

It took overtime but Perth Lynx are certain of a play-offs spot after beating Melbourne Boomers 87-81 on Sunday and improving to 15-7. Toni Edmondson fouled out with 1:40 left in regulation after contributing 9 points, 3 rebounds and a steal to the Lynx cause.

Micaela Cocks also scored 9 points as Townsville Fire downed Dandenong Rangers for the second consecutive weekend although fellow Tall Fern Chev Paalvast didn’t take the floor. The victory means the Fire have a 2-1 winning split on Dandenong that may be enough, depending on the results of the final round of games next week, to carry them to third spot on the WNBL ladder.

However nothing is certain as fifth placed Canberra, who visit Townsville on Saturday, hold the series advantage over the defending champions.

Jess Bygate (Melbourne Boomers) and Jordan Hunter (Adelaide Lightning) will conclude their seasons next week with their teams filling the last two places on the ladder.

usa-today-8946868-0

Jack Salt and Tai Webster headlined the performances by Tall Blacks overseas this week.

Salt, having appeared to cement a spot in the Cavaliers starting frame, scored a career high 10 points as Virginia pasted Robert Morris 79-39. Reportedly eight of Jack’s family is heading to LA this week to see the 13th ranked Cavaliers take on University of California, Berkley.

Webster breezed to a team high 17 points but it was not enough as Nebraska Huskers fell 70-62 to Gardner Webb. The Tall Blacks point guard also posted 5 rebounds and 4 assists but will be disappointed with 7 turnovers.

In the ANBL Reuben Te Rangi put in a strong shift for Brisbane Bullets as they headed Melbourne United 100-90 on Saturday. Te Rangi scored 7 points and impressed with his 18 minutes of endeavor at the defensive end matching up on the likes of Chris Goulding and Casper Ware.

In Spain Isaac Fotu converted all four scoring attempts on his way to 8 points and 5 rebounds as Zaragoza improved to 5-7 with a convincing 90-74 victory against Andorra. The win moves Zaragoza up to 10th on the Liga Endesa table.

Sammic ISB slipped to 4th on the lower tier LEB Silver table after a 78-56 thumping by Granada. Mike Karena returned 9 points (4/10FG) to compliment 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

One of the standout performers for the Junior Tall Blacks last week in Fiji at the FIBA U18 Oceania Champs Waardenburg had 13 points and 7 rebounds as Breakers Development went down 114-91 in the final of the Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam on Saturday. The Junior Tall Ferns progressed to the FIBA Under 18 Oceania Championships Grand Final by defeating Samoa 108-25 in the semi-final played in Suva on Friday afternoon.

The JTF’s made a perfect start as Akiene Reed converted a lay-up on the opening play and Tiarna Clarke landed a sideline three on the next possession.

New Zealand scored the first 9 points of the game before Samoa opened their account with an inside basket.

Aliyah Dunn finished strong in the paint, Charlisse Leger-Walker landed a jump shot and followed with a steal and lay-up to take the JTB’s to a comfortable 25-4 quarter time advantage.

Samoa opened the scoring in the second quarter but seven straight points opened the JTF’s advantage to 32-8.

The JTF’s were dominating the paint and inside baskets from Dunn, Charlotte Whittaker and Esra McGoldrick increased the Ferns lead to 44-10 at the mid point in the stanza.

A three from Alyssa Hirawani capped a strong first half from the JTF’s as they led 56-14 at the interval – a balanced scoring effort led by McKenna Dale (8pts).

Leger-Walker knocked down a corner three off a no look Clarke pass, Clarke landed a brace of triples of her own as New Zealand scored 15 straight points before Samoa replied.

Samoa, with a number of Kiwi based players, never gave up and enjoyed a brief scoring burst before Kendell Heremaia landed a jump shot to help the JTF’s to an 83-23 lead at the last break.

Whittaker continued to trouble Samoa with her inside presence and earned herself a couple of trips to the foul line. Jayden Fuiava and Reed scored from beyond the arc and it was another triple, this time from Leger-Walker that brought up the JTF’s ton.

New Zealand coach Brent Matehaere was content to share the playing time amongst his full playing group ahead of a tougher examination against Australia in the final.

The Junior Tall Ferns will face Australia in the final at 4pm on Saturday for a place at the FIBA Under 19 World Championships in Cairo next year. Earlier Australia hammered New Caledonia 137-8 in the first semi-final.

Rusbatch and Tait in fine form

The opening game of round three of the Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam Men’s competition on Saturday featured The Birdmen and Breakers Development.

The Breakers were bolstered by the inclusion of Shea Ili – the point guard working his way back to full fitness as he recovers from a stress fracture in the lower back.

Some sloppy Breakers ball retention was seized on by Justin Bailey for the Birdmen before Ethan Rusbatch landed a couple of long threes and Thomas Whyte a reverse lay-up to take the Breakers to a 20-16 lead at quarter time.

The Breakers soon took their advantage into double figures and beyond as SKYCITY Breakers Number 91, Derone Raukawa racked up nine straight points – Raukawa debuted for the senior team the night before.Ili and Jaylen Gerrand exchanged threes but the Breakers lead was 53-36 by the half.

Only six players made up the Birdman flock in this one and those depleted numbers began to tell in the second half. Bailey, Tipene Friday and Brandon Lucas, the former East Central University Tiger guard soldiered on, but the youthful Breakers wave led by Dan Fotu and Kruz Perrott-Hunt prevailed.

Final score;

Breakers Development 112 – Rusbatch 23, Raukawa 21, Fotu 18, Perrott-Hunt 14, Ili 10, Whyte 7.

Birdmen 78 – Lucas 23, Bailey 18, Gerrand 17, Friday 9, Sampson Aruwa 8

In the second game Hayden Allen, making his first appearance of the season, was inserted into 68a Nelson Street’s starting lineup. He joined two other former Tall Blacks Dillon Boucher and Lindsay Tait in a potent squad.

Mai FM 88 Sixers also boasted a couple of former TB’s with Brook Ruscoe and Josh Bloxham bossing their backcourt. Both were prominent in a first quarter edged by Nelson St 26-25.

Nick Barrow and Johnny Fesolai were prominent in the Sixers front court and with Chris McIntosh knocking down a couple of threes in the shadows of half-time they trailed by just a half dozen, 56-50 at half-time.

A triple from Liam Thornton and regular forays into the key by Tait, Allen and Marco Alexander kept Nelson St ahead but a fine shooting display from Ruscoe (6 from 11 threes) kept the Sixers in contention – 83-74 down at half-time.

More threes from Bloxham and Ruscoe threatened an upset but Boucher set up Linus Jakzst and Hyrum Harris for inside opportunities to help inflict the first defeat of the season on the Sixers.

Final score;

68a Nelson St 119 – Tait 31, Allen 24, Harris 20, Alexander 17, Jakszt 8

Mai FM 88 Sixers 109 – Ruscoe 27, Haku 16, Bloxham 15, Fesolai 13, Barrow 12, Will Heather 12
