Jillian Harmon led all scorers with 19 points as Le Mura Lucca beat arch rivals Familia Schio 65-50 on Sunday in front of their home fans to clinch the Italian Championship.

Lucca won the Grand Final series 3-1 clinching the title with a game to spare.

Having split the opening two games at Schio, Lucca capitalised on home court advantage at the weekend winning 74-68 on Friday (Harmon also scored 19 points in that game) before clinching a first championship on Sunday.

The win was sweet revenge for Lucca having lost the 2016 grand final series to the same opponents 3-0.

The Tall Ferns forward has had an outstanding season for Lucca, her second with the club and seventh overall in Italy, averaging 17.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

Her 17.2 points per game placed her third on the Italian League scoring list thi seasob.

Also enjoying great success are Sunbury Jets in the Big V League. The Melbourne club, pioted by Tall Ferns coach Kennedy Kereama, has made a perfect start to the season winning nine straight games. Tall Ferns centre Josie Stockill had a huge double double of 25 points (10/18FG, 4/4FT) and 11 rebounds as the Jets soared past second on the table Knox Raiders 63-48.

After recently getting married Toni Edmondson returned to the court for Perry Lakes Hawks against South West Slammers in the Western Australia State League (SBL). The Hawks were far too good for the Slammers winning 62-37 with Edmondson notching 6 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Like the Sunbury Jets the Hawks are unbeaten in the opening weeks of the season.

Also in WA the Perth Redbacks beat Rockingham Flames 62-37 with forward Lisa Wallbutton producing 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals as the Flames improved to 5-3 in sixth place on the ladder.

Back in Melbourne and Jess Bygate had 10 points and 7 rebounds, including 4 of the offensive variety, as Sandringham Sabres beat Melbourne Tigers 81-59 in the SEABL competition.

Micaela Cocks and Chevannah Paalvast made successful debuts in the Queensland Basketball League (QBL) for Mackay Meteorettes. The Meteorettes beat Rockhampton 80-61 and Gladstone 87-49 in a double-header weekend. Cocks averaged 17.5 points and Paalvast 11 points across the two games

It was not such good news for the Tall Blacks in Europe.

Isaac Fotu produced 7 points and 4 rebounds as Zaragoza went down 98-78 to Real Madrid in the Spanish Liga Endesa.

In Turkey Tom Abercrombie has played just one game for Demir IBB in the last six weeks. Signed as injury cover for an American import in March the Breakers swingman has played just six games for Demir who sit 12th on the sixteen team Turkish League ladder.

Purcell spreads her wings

Good news that Tall Fern Kalani Purcell has been signed to a training camp contract with WNBA franchise Dallas Wings.

“We look forward to Kalani and Kelsey joining a highly competitive training camp,” Wings President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Bibb stated. “We are excited to open camp on April 23 with a deep and talented roster.”

It is unclear how long the contract is for but it could be anticipated that it is at least until the Wings tip-off their regular season home opener on May 20 against three-time WNBA champions Minnesota Lynx – hopefully longer.

Purcell’s addition takes the Wings current roster, including Australian guard Erin Phillips, to 18 players – this number has to be eventually trimmed to 12.

Purcell, a 6-2 forward, joins the Wings after a stellar career at BYU Provo. In her two seasons with the Cougars she was named to the All-West Coast Conference First Team (2016 & 2017) where she ranked as the top rebounder.

A transfer from Hutchinson Community College, Purcell became BYU’s single-season record holder in total rebounds with 416 boards (12.6 average), and was named 2015-16 WCC Newcomer of the Year. This past season she once again led the Cougars and the conference in rebounds and finished her senior campaign averaging 12.7 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per contest, earning the 2016-17 WCC Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Year award.

Good news also for Jillian Harmon in Europe. Her club Le Mura Lucca eased past Venezia in the opening game of the Italian League semi-final series. The teams won one game apiece when they met in the regular season but Lucca drew first blood in the best of three series winning 77-61 on Easter Monday to move within one victory of a return to the grand final.

Harmon led all scorers with 19 points (6/9Fg, 7/9FT) and added 7 rebounds and an assist for good measure.

Mixed fortunes for Rooney and Harmon

Our two Tall Ferns playing in Europe enjoyed mixed fortunes in recent play-off action.

Erin Rooney’s club Artego Bydgoszcz was defeated 3-1 in the best of five semi-final series against Wisla Can in the Polish League play-off’s. Artego won the first game 68-65 but were beaten 81-66 in the second encounter, 68-63 in game three and 68-60 in the eliminator.

The Cantabrian guard averaged 18 minutes, 4 points, 3 rebounds and two assists across the four games.

Normally you would expect the season to be over following a play-off defeat but unusually Artego will play a 3rd/4th series against the other semi-final losers CCC Polkowice.

There was no such trouble for Jillian Harmon, the other Tall Fern playing in Europe. Her club Le Mura Lucca easily accounted for Pallacanestro Broni in the best of three Italian League quarter-final series. Lucca won 2-0 on the back of 69-39 and 85-35 score lines more reminiscent of a rep game mismatch than those normally associated with the professional game.

Harmon top scored with 16 points in the second game – Lucca now moving on to face Venezia in the semi-final series. The teams won one game apiece when they met in the regular season.

Edmondson to remain in Perth

Not too much to report from Australia as the majority of State Leagues in Australia are taking a break over Easter weekend.

However one piece of good news to emerge last week was that Toni Edmondson has re-signed with Perth Lynx for the 2017-18 WNBL season.

The 29-year old enjoyed an outstanding 2016/17 season, starting all 27 games for the Lynx averaging 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per outing.

“I can’t wait for the new season to start,” said Edmondson who is currently playing the WNBL off-season for Perry Lakes Hawks in the Western Australian State League.

“I’ve been here for five years now so WA definitely feels like home,” added Edmondson who has played 211 games in her nine seasons in the League.

The Cantabrian debuted in the WNBL back in 2007 when she suited for her hometown team Christchurch Sirens in its only season in the competition. From there she linked with Dandenong Rangers, Bendigo Spirit and Adelaide Lightning before settling in Perth.

A key member of the Tall Ferns, Edmondson looks set to continue her international career when the New Zealand team travels to India to contest the FIBA Asia Cup for the first time. The tournament will begin late July in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru (formerly known as Bangalore).

Mixed bag for the Tall Ferns at the weekend

Lisa Wallbutton

Former North Harbour star Lisa Wallbutton

Our Tall Ferns in Australia came out on the right side of the ledger at the weekend but only just – wins for Edmondson, Wallbutton and Stockill but losses for Hunter and Bygate.

It was a more than useful 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists from Toni Edmondson that helped Perry Lakes Hawks win an exciting encounter against Willetton Tigers 81-79 in the State League over in Western Australia. The Hawks, with four straight wins, are top of the table.

Also in the State League Perth Redbacks beat East Perth Eagles 72-56. Lisa Wallbutton contributed 4 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks as the Redbacks won for the second straight week.

Sunbury Jets are now five from five in the Big V League after beating Waverley Falcons 80-66 on Sunday. Josie Stockill made 10 points and added 4 rebounds and a steal in this latest Jets victory.

Sandringham Sabres had a disastrous weekend in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL). Jess Bygate put in a couple of good shifts but the Sabres were cut to bits on Friday by Bendigo Braves (85-56) and again on Saturday by Dandenong Rangers (83-39).

The former Nelson power forward contributed 11 points, 5 rebounds, a steal and a block against Bendigo and backed that up with 10 points and 4 rebounds 24 hours later.

Jordan Hunter scored 4 points in her second game for Sturt Sabres in the South Australian Premier League as Sturt fell 75-69 at Forestville Eagles.

Mixed fortunes in Spain for Fotu and Karena plus Rooney into semi-finals

CAI-SPI_Fotu contra

With Tom Abercrombie and Jillian Harmon inactive only three Kiwis were in action last weekend in Europe.

Erin Rooney and Artego Bydgoszcz are locked at 1-1 with Wisla Can in the Polish League semi-final play-off series. Artego won the first game 68-65 on Saturday but were beaten 81-66 in the second encounter on Sunday. Rooney played just 5 minutes on Saturday but was reinstated to a starting role 24 hours later and contributed 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

The other Tall Fern in Europe Jillian Harmon enjoyed a weekend off. Her club Le Mura Lucca had a break ahead of an Italian League quarter-final series against Pallacanestro Broni.

Zaragoza is now in last but one spot on the Spanish League ladder after falling 65-54 at Iberostar Tenerife. Tall Blacks forward Isaac Fotu scored 7 points and claimed 5 rebounds in the not unexpected result – Tenerife are top of the table. It doesn’t get any easier for Zaragoza next week visiting powerhouse FC Barcelona.

Sammic ISB improved to 21-6 at the top of the Spanish LEB Silver League table with a comprehensive 94-65 victory against the deliciously named Torrons Vicens L’Hospitalet on Saturday.

Mike Karena helped ensure Sammic were not the casualties of an upset by claiming 14 points and 7 rebounds in this one. Sammic face a tougher task next week against third placed Granada.

In Turkey Tom Abercrombie missed Demir IBB breaking a ten game losing streak against Ted Kolejliler Ankara. Demir beat the bottom of the table TKA 96-73.

Good performances from Bygate, Edmondson, Wallbutton, Hunter & Stockill

There were a number of commendable performances from Kiwis in Australian State League competitions over the weekend including a fine double double from Jess Bygate at a facility known to many Kiwi basketball players.

Bygate scored a game high 19 points for Sandringham Sabres in the South East Australian Basketball league (SEABL) but the Melbourne team went down heavily at Albury Wodonga losing 89-59. Bygate also corralled 11 rebounds in a game played at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre, a facility well known to the many young Kiwi players that have represented New Zealand Koru teams.

Jordan Hunter notched 7 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists on debut for Sturt Sabres in the South Australian Premier League on Saturday. The Sabres only scored 30 points in the first three periods against Southern Tigers but came home on a wet sail winning the last quarter 31-18 and the game 61-59.

Toni Edmondson top scored with 16 points (6/14FG) and claimed 4 rebounds as Perry Lakes Hawks defeated Cockburn Cougars 66-61 in the Western Australian State League. A decisive 20-11 second quarter did the trick for the Hawks that remain unbeaten after three rounds.

Also in WA Lisa Wallbutton was in good form for Perth Redbacks. Wallbutton led the game in rebounds (11) and blocks (4) as the Redbacks comfortably beat Kalamunda Eastern Suns 80-54. The former North Harbour forward added 7 points and 3 assists for good measure.

Sunbury Jets made it four wins in four outings in the Big V League after defeating Bulleen Boomers 68-58 on Sunday. Josie Stockill, in her first season out of college basketball scored 10 points and added 6 rebounds, a block and a steal for the Kennedy Kereama coached Jets.

Erin Rooney into Polish League semi-finals

The starters played the bulk of the minutes but Erin Rooney still chipped in for ten minutes off the bench as Artego Bydgoszcz won an epic five game series in Polish League quarter-final action. With the series locked at 2-2 Artego beat Energa Torun 86-80 on the road in the decisive fifth game on Wednesday.

Rooney dished off one of the team’s 26 assists but otherwise had a quiet night statistically.

The Tall Ferns point guard is working her way back to full fitness after an injury ravaged 2015. Since joining Artego in January the Cantabrian has played 15 games averaging 20 minutes of court time and accruing 3.4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal per game.

Artego begin a semi-final series at the weekend against TS Wisla. When the teams met in the regular season Wisla won both encounters although the margins were just 6 points and 7 points.

Rooney in a tussle, Fotu and Abbo in sticky situations.

Tom Abercrombie and Isaac Fotu are fighting rearguard actions in Europe but it is better news for Erin Rooney, Jillian Harmon and Mike Karena.

Erin Rooney and Artego Bydgoszcz are locked at 2-2 in a five game dual in the Polish League quarter-final play-off series – Artego beat Energa Torun 61-60 in an exciting game three. Rooney played a steady hand scoring 7 points on 3 from 5 shooting in 26 minutes.

Torun bounced back in game four on Sunday to win 65-55 – Rooney had a quiet night in that one getting just 3 rebounds and a steal.

Le Mura Lucca relinquished top spot on the Italian League ladder in the very last game of the regular season going down 70-65 at fourth placed San Martino on Sunday. Jillian Harmon was busy with 18 points, 4 rebounds and a brace of steals but Lucca’s opening quarter of just 5 points proved to be their undoing.

Lucca will now face the winner of the Ubertide v Broni tie at home in the quarter-finals.

Zaragoza are having a tough time in the lower reaches of the Spanish League but a home loss by 45 points must be the low point of the season. Defeated 102-57 by sixth placed Gran Canaria, Zaragoza slipped one place to 15th on the 17 team Liga Endesa table. Tall Blacks forward Isaac Fotu was used sparingly scoring just 6 points in 18 minutes of action.

Mike Karena stacked the stats sheet with 14 points (4/11FG), 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals as Sammic ISB beat Valladolid 88-84 to remain at the top of the LEB Silver league table – the Spanish third division. Sammic appeared to be cruising at the three-quarter mark leading 77-61 but were given a scare by their mid table rivals in the fourth period before securing a sixth straight win

In Turkey it’s now 10 straight defeats for Demir IBB and Tom Abercrombie has been involved in half of the losses since arriving in Istanbul. At the weekend Abercrombie managed 9 points (3/6FG) and 3 rebounds as Demir fell 84-67 to third placed Besiktas.

A mixed bag in Europe this week

Despite a change of coach a couple of games ago Zaragoza, with another loss, are flirting with the Liga Endesa relegation zone after a 100-92 loss at Andorra. Former Rangitoto College favourite Isaac Fotu finished the game with 10 points (5/8FG) and 5 rebounds. Zaragoza now has an 8-16 record, just one win above the drop zone.

In contrast Mike Karena and Sammic ISB are flying high. Sammic head the LEB Silver ladder, the Spanish third division, with a 19-6 record. Karena put together another strong performance nabbing 21 points (8/12FG) and 6 rebounds in the latest Sammic success – an 89-82 win against mid-table Zornotza.

In Turkey Thomas Abercrombie’s club Demir IBB continue to struggle slipping to a ninth straight league defeat. Up against defending champions Fenerbache in Istanbul Demir was well beaten 89-68.

In his fourth game for Demir Abercrombie scored 7 points (3/8FG) and also totaled 3 rebounds and a block.

Erin Rooney scored 9 points for Artego Bydgoszcz in Polish League quarter-finals play-off action. Artego went down 75-61 at Energa Torun in the first game in the best of three tie on Saturday.

48 hours later Artego leveled the series with a nail biting 68-67 victory in game two. Rooney enjoyed 30 minutes of court time in that one producing 5 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal.

The deciding game is on Saturday.

In Italy top of the table Le Mura Lucca thumped Umbertide 87-46 to improve to 18-3 for the season. Starting forward Jillian Harmon was only required for 18 minutes but still scored 17 points on 8 from 9 shooting. Harmon has amassed 352 points this season averaging 17.6 points per game.
