Rusbatch nets 36 points but Breakers went down in latest Mexicali Fresh action

unknown

Round four of the 2016 Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam saw wins for Mai FM 88 Sixers and 68a Nelson St on Saturday.

Breakers Development had just five players suited for their game against Mai FM 88 Sixers – Jordan Ngatai, Derone Raukawa, Ethan Rusbatch, Kruz Perrott-Hunt and James Moors.

Early on they were equal to the task trailing by just three points at quarter time 25-22 and still in contention, 49-44 down at half-time

Rusbatch opened the second half with a three, Moors finished with a dunk, Perrott-Hunt landed a triple and when Raukawa converted in transition the Breakers were ahead 57-56.

But that was as close as it got for the Breakers.

A hook shot followed by triple from Will Heather restored the Sixers advantage and soon after Perrott-Hunt made the Breakers task more difficult after picking up his fifth foul.

The numerical disadvantage took its toll on the Breakers in the fourth. Ana Haku, Brook Ruscoe and Josh Bloxham helped the Sixers stretch out to a 98-81 lead with three minutes to play before eventually winning 109-84.

Final score;

Breakers Development 84 – Rusbatch 36, Raukawa 27, Ngatai 11

Mai FM 88 Sixers 109 – Haku 25, Ruscoe 20, Manny Matambanadzo 15, Heather 14

The highlight of the opening quarter of the encounter between The Birdmen and 68A Nelson Street was a drive and dunk in traffic from Liam Thornton helping Nelson Street forge a 28-24 lead.

Tipene Friday drew the Birdmen within a point, 34-33 after a Sam Aruwa steal however a late Nelson Street surge led by Lindsay Tait and Hyrum Harris propelled them to a 62-48 half-time lead.

Late in the third another Thornton dunk off a classic Tait steal and Boucher assist kept Nelson Street in the ascendancy 87-74.

Regular scoring contributions from Justin Bailey, Brandon Lucas and Jaylen Gerrand kept the Birdmen in contention but Stu McEwan brought up the century for Nelson St (101-86) with six minutes to play.

A Lucas jump shot cut the arrears but back-to-back buckets from Harris including an And-1 play stretched the lead to 106-92.

Youngsters Linus Jakszt and Thornton added the finishing touches for Nelson Street.

Final score;

68a Nelson St 115 – Harris 23, Tait 22, Thornton 19, Jakszt 17, McEwan 13

The Birdmen 104 – Bailey 28, Lucas 20, Gerrand 20, Friday 19

Ashleigh Kelman-Poto was the star of the second round of the Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam Women’s competition on Saturday.

The former Mount Albert Grammar standout was in an unstoppable mood scoring 36 points to lead the Sparks to a 63-51 victory against Team Sky.

Renee Johnston scored an early three for Team Sky but a couple of baskets each from Kaitlin Burgess and Kazia Kelly opened an early lead for Sparks that stretched to 31-21 at half-time

Sharne Pupuke-Robati and Rhyannon Poto, both current MAGS students, did their best to keep Sky in the hunt but Kelman-Poto was in irresistible form scoring 13 straight points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

36 points was a career high for the 24 year old forward who graduated from East Central University, Oklahoma earlier this year.

Final score;

Sparks 63 – Kelman-Poto 36, Burgess 9, Tangiariki 6

Sky 51 – Pupuke-Robati 11, Poto 10, Manase 8, S Herewini 6

In game two Team Storm won for the second time coming from behind to beat The Suns in a close one 62-59.

The scores were locked 31 apiece at half- time with Safena TeNana-Williams nabbing 10 points for Storm, Anna Lacey and Mikayla Blair leading the way for The Suns.

Both teams were deprived of players early in the second half. Suns guard Shauna Povey was forced out with an ankle injury and Storm forward Keeley Tini followed her to the sideline soon after.

The Suns shone in the third producing a dominating 17-8 surge as Kat Leslie, and the Jenkins duo Annabelle and Tabitha Jenkins cut loose.

The Suns still led by double figures with six minutes to play but were run down by Zara Jillings and Georgie Henare in the closing minutes, the pair scoring a collective 19 points in the fourth.

In an exciting finish Annabelle Jenkins had kept the Suns ahead with a minute to play but a Jillings drive leveled proceedings. A strong inside move from Jazz Kailahi gave the advantage to The Storm only for Blair once again to tie the scores with 30 seconds to play.

Following a timeout Henare nailed a sideline triple – The Suns unable to find an open shot to force overtime in the remaining 11 seconds.

Final score;

Storm 79 – Jillings 19, TeNana-Williams 11, Henare 7, Tini 6

Suns 59 – A Jenkins 11, T Jenkins 9, Lacey 8, Blair 7

Rusbatch and Tait in fine form

The opening game of round three of the Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam Men’s competition on Saturday featured The Birdmen and Breakers Development.

The Breakers were bolstered by the inclusion of Shea Ili – the point guard working his way back to full fitness as he recovers from a stress fracture in the lower back.

Some sloppy Breakers ball retention was seized on by Justin Bailey for the Birdmen before Ethan Rusbatch landed a couple of long threes and Thomas Whyte a reverse lay-up to take the Breakers to a 20-16 lead at quarter time.

The Breakers soon took their advantage into double figures and beyond as SKYCITY Breakers Number 91, Derone Raukawa racked up nine straight points – Raukawa debuted for the senior team the night before.Ili and Jaylen Gerrand exchanged threes but the Breakers lead was 53-36 by the half.

Only six players made up the Birdman flock in this one and those depleted numbers began to tell in the second half. Bailey, Tipene Friday and Brandon Lucas, the former East Central University Tiger guard soldiered on, but the youthful Breakers wave led by Dan Fotu and Kruz Perrott-Hunt prevailed.

Final score;

Breakers Development 112 – Rusbatch 23, Raukawa 21, Fotu 18, Perrott-Hunt 14, Ili 10, Whyte 7.

Birdmen 78 – Lucas 23, Bailey 18, Gerrand 17, Friday 9, Sampson Aruwa 8

In the second game Hayden Allen, making his first appearance of the season, was inserted into 68a Nelson Street’s starting lineup. He joined two other former Tall Blacks Dillon Boucher and Lindsay Tait in a potent squad.

Mai FM 88 Sixers also boasted a couple of former TB’s with Brook Ruscoe and Josh Bloxham bossing their backcourt. Both were prominent in a first quarter edged by Nelson St 26-25.

Nick Barrow and Johnny Fesolai were prominent in the Sixers front court and with Chris McIntosh knocking down a couple of threes in the shadows of half-time they trailed by just a half dozen, 56-50 at half-time.

A triple from Liam Thornton and regular forays into the key by Tait, Allen and Marco Alexander kept Nelson St ahead but a fine shooting display from Ruscoe (6 from 11 threes) kept the Sixers in contention – 83-74 down at half-time.

More threes from Bloxham and Ruscoe threatened an upset but Boucher set up Linus Jakzst and Hyrum Harris for inside opportunities to help inflict the first defeat of the season on the Sixers.

Final score;

68a Nelson St 119 – Tait 31, Allen 24, Harris 20, Alexander 17, Jakszt 8

Mai FM 88 Sixers 109 – Ruscoe 27, Haku 16, Bloxham 15, Fesolai 13, Barrow 12, Will Heather 12

The 2016 Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam Women’s competition began on Saturday with some of the best age group players in Auckland demonstrating their abilities.

In the opening game The Suns were too good for The Sparks winning 62-53 on the back of a combined 25 points from the Jenkins sisters Tabitha and Annabelle.

Eight early points from former Tall Fern Amanda Buck and half a dozen from Yzabelle Tevao helped the Sparks to a 26-23 half-time lead. Tabitha Jenkins with 10 points led all scorers at the interval.

Mikayla Blair landed a brace of baskets and Shauna Povey connected with a triple and with the Sparks kept to ten points in the quarter the Suns rose to a 39-36 three-quarter time advantage.

Despite 8 points in the final quarter from Kaitlin Burgess the Sparks were left in the shadows of the Sun down the stretch – threes from Blair, Povey and Sylvia Wierzorek plus eight points from Annabelle Jenkins saw the Suns home.

Final score;

Suns 62 – Blair 16, T Jenkins 15, A Jenkins 10, Wierzorek 8, Povey 7

Sparks 53 – Buck 12, Burgess 11, Theyers 7, Tevao 6, Kelman-Poto 6

In game two Team Storm prevailed against Team Sky 79-70 with Junior Tall Fern Zara Jillings nailing 27 points for Storm.

Storm held a commanding 38-24 advantage at half-time with Jillings and Georgie Henare connecting from long range on a couple of occasion s each.

Team Sky, led by NZ Under 16 standout Sharne Pupuke-Robati, came back strongly in the second half to reduce the deficit. A three from Jordan Maddix and regular contributions from Ngapipi Herewini kept the Sky score ticking along.

However Jillings (five triples in the game), fellow Westlaker Keeley Tini and Under 15 Nationals MVP Jazz Kailahi were in no mood to allow their early advantage to evaporate holding on for the win despite being outscored 24-19 in the last period.

Final score;

Storm 79 – Jillings 27, Jazz Kailahi 13, Tini 11, Henare 11

Sky 70 – Pupuke-Robati 19, N Herewini 12, Maddix 9, Te Huia Taylor 9

Close games were the order of the day in the second round of the Men’s 2016 Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam.

The Breakers Development team included all three SKYCITY Breakers D players Ethan Rusbatch, Sam Waardenburg and Derone Raukawa as well as rostered player Jordan Ngatai for their encounter with Mai FM 88 Sixers.

Raukawa, returning after a 6 week lay off with a badly broken finger, was quickly in the action combining well with Ngatai and knocking down a couple of trade mark jumpers as the Breakers forged a 41-35 advantage

Brook Ruscoe showed touches of class to keep the Sixers in touch as did the double B forward punch of Patrich Bolstad and Nick Barrow.

A couple of typical Manny Matambanadzo slashing penetrative drives were countered by Isaac Letoa and Rusbatch triples.

Johnny Fesolai edged Sixers ahead at half-time 57-55 as they continued to trouble the Breakers on the glass.

The Sixers opened the second half with a 9-2 run but quickly racked up fouls gifting the Breakers opportunities at the foul line, the Breakers drawing level 54 each courtesy of Rusbatch

Thomas Whyte and Kruz Perrott-Hunt sunk threes although a drive and the bonus from Ruscoe kept Sixers 80-77 to the good at three-quarter time.

A Sam Waardenburg put back tied the scores with four minutes to play.

It was 90 apiece with three to play but a couple of Dan Fotu defensive efforts turned the game in favour of the Breakers. On consecutive plays the swingman came up with an athletic block and a key defensive rebound allowing Ngatai the opportunity to score at the offensive end to open a narrow 93-90 lead.

Ana Haku took advantage of some sloppy Breakers defensive work to narrow the gap to a single point but the experienced Tall Blacks pair of Rusbatch and Ngatai sealed a narrow 96-94 win for the Breakers.

Final Score;

Breakers 96 – Ngatai 22, Rusbatch 17, Waardenburg 14, Fotu 11, Perrott-Hunt 9, Raukawa 7, Whyte 7

Nelson Street held a 57-53 advantage with Marco Alexander and Lindsay Tait prominent.

Lucas led all scorers with 19 points at the break, Tait next best with 17 points for Nelson Street.

The in form Jaylen Gerrand and Lucas landed threes but a spinning drive from Liam Thornton and a couple of Joe Webb scores reduced the arrears before James and Bailey added buckets to keep Birdmen ahead at three-quarter time 89-82.

A Gerrand three brought up the 100 for Birdmen necessitating a time by Nelson Street – trailing by ten points with 5:35 to play and without the influential Dillon Boucher (fouled out early in the fourth quarter).

Joe Webb and Linus Jakszt gave Nelson Street some hope but Buck and Sam Aruwa took the advantage, in favour of the Birdmen, to 112-103 entering the last two minutes and that was enough to seal the win.

Gerrand soars as Birdmen beat Sixers

maxresdefault

Jaylen Gerrand

Justin Bailey will lead the Birdmen but due to his Breakers team management commitments he was unavailable for their Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam opening game against Mai FM 88 Sixers on Saturday.

Jaylen Gerrand filled the void in style scoring a week one high 37 points to ease the Sixers to a comfortable 94-86 win against the Birdmen.

Both teams were missing key players but it was the Sixers that started the strongest forging an 18-15 lead.

That was turned around late in the first as Ana Haku landed a couple of corner threes to take Mai FM 88 Sixers to a 23-20 first quarter advantage.

Gerrand had the hot hands in the second scoring inside and out as the Birdmen moved to a 38-29 lead.

Brandon Lucas, a graduate from East Central University, Oklahoma, was also showing some nice scoring touch for the Birdmen and his match up with Haku was interesting to watch.

Guard Chris McIntosh knocked down a jump shot on the half-time buzzer that kept the Sixers in touch, 40-39, behind at the interval. Gerrand led all scorers with 23 points, Haku 19 points for the Sixers.

Forward Alex Schipper threw down a dunk for the Birdmen but a brace of Haku threes and inside baskets from Patrice Bolstad and Johnny Fesolai plus transition points from Manny Matabanadzo took the Sixers to a six point lead before the Birdmen took flight.

The back end of the third was one way traffic in favour of the Birdmen, their scoring surge highlighted by three consecutive threes from Lucas – 71-64 at three-quarter time.

Nick Barrow and Bolstad wheeled away inside for the Sixers but Gerrand and the support cast of Tipene Friday and the Aruwa brothers held all the answers in the fourth.

Final score;

The Birdmen 94 – Gerrand 37, Lucas 22, Sam Aruwa 11, Samson Aruwa 10, Friday 8

Mai FM 88 Sixers 86 – Haku 28, Matabanadzo 17, Bolstad 10, Barrow 9, Lacey 8, McIntosh 8

The Women’s competition begins next Saturday, November 5th.

Tait and Nelson Street prove too strong for Breakers D squad

jordan-ngatai-300x300

Jordan Ngatai led the Breakers scoring

The Breakers Development team ran into a road jam that was 68A Nelson Street in the fourth quarter of the opening game of the 2016 Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam. The Breakers led 76-75 entering the final period but could only muster 15 points in the final ten minutes going down 100-91.

Earlier Jordan Ngatai, the only senior player in the Breakers lineup, scored the first five points for the hosts as they opened an early lead. Lindsay Tait and Marco Alexander began finding holes in the Breakers defence and a typical Tait drive tied the scored at 18 apiece.

Ngatai and Dan Fotu drew fouls late in the period to work their way to the foul line and take Breakers to a 32-22 quarter time lead.

Linus Jakzst in transition and Dillon Boucher in the paint reduced the Breakers advantage. Cruz Perrot-Hunt landed a three but Liam Thornton responded with a trey of his own for Nelson St.

A couple of Hyrum Harris buckets reduced the lead to 41-39 before Waardenburg provided a highlight dunk down the lane.

Tyler Kerlin tied the scores at 45 apiece, Boucher taking Nelson St ahead for the first time in the game although a James Moors bucket gave Breakers a 50-49 half-time lead.

Nelson St opened the second with an 8-0 run – six of them to Jakzst -before Letoa initiated a response from the Breakers.

The Westlake point guard began a threes barrage as he and Thomas Whyte landed from long range for Breakers and Daniel Green and Tait did likewise for Nelson St.

A couple of Fotu baskets edged Breakers to that single figure three-quarter lead before the Nelson St outfit took command in the final period – Thornton and Jakzst combining well with their more experienced colleagues to seal the win.

Final score:

68A Nelson Street 100 – Tait 23, Alexander 18, Thornton 16, Jakzst 14, Harris 10

Breakers Development 91 – Ngatai 22, Waardenburg 18, Fotu 16, Letoa 14, Perrott-Hunt 7, Cam Stone 7

2016 Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam underway on Saturday

Justin Bailey

The 2016 version of the Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam gets underway on Saturday with the traditional mixture of young, not so young and veteran players making up the four Men’s teams.

The Women’s competition begins the following week, November 5th.

Justin Bailey will lead the Birdmen. Bailey a former NBL import is back in New Zealand and managing the SKYCITY Breakers team this season. Bailey won a championship with the Waikato Pistons in 2009 and last played professionally with Harbour Heat in 2012.

The support cast around Bailey will include BJ Anthony, Tipene Friday, Carl Buck and Jaylen Gerrand.

The Mai FM 88 Sixers will also have an American accent running the point with Kevin Braswell in charge. NBL regulars Josh Bloxham, Brook Ruscoe, Ana Haku and Nick Barrow will form the core for the Sixers.

Lindsay Tait will once again lead 68A Nelson Street (for many years the home of Youthtown before sadly closing a couple of years ago).

Tait will have the support of Dillon Boucher and a number of guards including Joe Webb, Tyler Kerlin, Marco Alexander and Dan Green.

The four team competition is rounded out by the Breakers Development squad that boasts senior players Ethan Rusbatch, Derone Raukawa, Finn Delany and Jordan Ngatai. The availability of these players will obviously be dependent on the needs of the senior team.

A strong bunch of Academy players will join the senior quartet including Isaac Letoa, Taki Fahrensohn, Brayden Inger, Dan Fotu and Sam Waardenburg.

It is also possible that the Breakers will be boosted by the inclusion of Shea Ili next month as he continues his recovery after incurring a stress fracture in his back earlier in the year.

The first game on Saturday at Atlas Place will feature Breakers Development v 68A Nelson Street at 2pm followed by The Birdmen v Mai FM 88 Sixers at 4pm. Entry is free.

Nelson Street claim Mexicali Men’s title

Matt Freeman (21pts) makes a jump shot over Josh Bloxham

Despite 39 points from Casey Frank 68 NelsonStreet proved too strong for The Birdmen winning the 2015 Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam Final 111-101.

NelsonStreet welcomed back Dillon Boucher after an injury lay-off but it was The Birdmen that flew out the gate the quickest. Threes from Josh Bloxham and Manny Matambanadzo helped The Birdmen establish a 24-19 quarter time lead.

NelsonStreet gathered the lead with a 7-0 run to open the stanza but five straight points from Casey Frank and three free throws, after being fouled attempting a triple, from Kevin Braswell edged The Birdmen back into a 46-41 lead.

The tail end of the quarter belonged to NelsonStreet as Tait landed a triple and Matt Freeman scored the last 5 points of the half to give NelsonStreet a 55-48 lead at the interval.

An early second half three by Frank was cancelled out by Tait and with BJ Anthony, Johnny Fesolai and Boucher controlling the defensive boards NelsonStreet was able to gather some easy points in transition. In addition Tait, Matt Lacey and Freeman all landed from deep to help extend the advantage at three-quarter time to 88-72.

Frank was terrific for The Birdmen but at times appeared to fighting a loan hand as NelsonStreet moved out to a 96-79 advantage. Freeman, fittingly in his last game in NZ before departing for the University of Oklahoma, brought up the 100 points with just fewer than 5 minutes to play. Chris Duthie and Carl Buck reduced the lead but were unable to seriously threaten the NelsonStreet advantage.

Final score:

68 Nelson Street 111 – Tait 31, Anthony 25, Freeman 21, Haku 9.

The Birdmen 101 – Frank 39, Braswell 21, Duthie 10, Bloxham 8.

Hunter leads Storm to Mexicali title

Jordan-Hunter-1200

31 points for Jordan Hunter

The Grand Final of the inaugural Women’s Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam proved to be a classic with The Storm coming from behind to clinch an exciting 86-84 victory against Team Sky.

Sky had made all the early running as the penetrative drives of Amanda Buck, Ayla Hoeta and Zara Jillings earned a steady stream of points and frequent visits to the foul line.

Sky led 69-55 at three-quarter time and was still in the ascendancy 79-69 with less than 5 minutes to play. It was then that the experienced pair of Jordan Hunter and Kate Lacey took control. Hunter converted an and one play and Lacey knocked down a corner three either side of a Milly Nathan put back and suddenly the Sky lead was just two points.

Buck got to the free throw line for Sky but Lacey then nailed another triple plus a brace of free throws and Storm were ahead for the first time in the game with 2:06 to play.

The Storm’s influential guard Hannah Turton fouled out, as did Tabitha Jenkins shortly after making two important free throws. Hoeta converted the two freebies following the Jenkins foul. – 84-83 in favour of Storm inside the final two minutes.

Jillings snared a steal but could only convert one of two free throws after being fouled on the lay-up – 84 apiece with 36 seconds remaining.

It was fitting that the player of the tournament, Tall Ferns point guard Jordan Hunter, sealed the game for Storm. She converted a free throw on each of Storms final two possessions with Sky unable to convert on its final play.

Earlier Jillings, Buck, Breanna Jones and Coutenay Leauanea had all connected with threes as Sky built a handy 49-40 half time advantage. With Katelin Noyer and Annabelle Jenkins holding their own on the boards against Nathan and Coola Baudry Sky appeared to have one hand on the trophy with a 14 points three quarter time lead.

What followed was a Hunter led Storm!

Final score;

Storm 86 – Hunter 31, Turton 12, Lacey 10, T Jenkins 10, Baudry 9, Nathan 9.

Team Sky 84 – Jillings 24, Buck 13, Noyer 12, Jones 12, A Jenkins 9, Hoeta 9.
