Wallbutton and Edmondson rebound in style

Basketball - Tall Ferns v Japan, 27 August 2009

Toni Edmondson

Tall Ferns Lisa Wallbutton and Toni Edmondson demonstrated their rebounding capabilities by collecting a combined 38 boards at the weekend in State League action in Perth.

Edmondson combined 13 rebounds with 12 points as Perry Lakes Hawks secured an impressive 75-62 victory against highflying Rockingham Flames 75-62.

The Hawks moved to 14-7 and 4th place on the ladder with the win, the Flames dropping from first to second.

Lisa Wallbutton had a double figure rebounding count in both Perth Redbacks games. On Friday the Redbacks were well beaten 80-53 by the highly rated Joondalup Wolves with Wallbutton snaring a game high 13 rebounds.

There was better news for the Redbacks on Saturday as they eased to a 69-42 win against Lakeside Lightning to maintain seventh spot and a likely spot place in play-off action with just one game in the regular season remaining.

Wallbutton had 4 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals in the win.

Townsville Flames moved up to third on the Queensland Basketball League table with a 77-60 victory at Cairns Dolphins on Saturday.

Chevannah Paalvast posted 11 points and 5 rebounds as the Flames recovered from a 39-37 half-time deficit. A 25-9 third quarter did the trick and carried Townsville to their 11th win of the campaign.

The Kennedy Kereama coached Sunbury Jets moved to 18-0 in the Big V First Division with a 97-41 demolition of Werribee Devils.

Forward Jess Bygate returned to the Jets lineup and posted an efficient 13 points.

The former Nelson forward made all four shots from the field as well as 5 from 7 free throws.

Duane Bailey scored 12 points and collected 8 rebounds as Brisbane Spartans protected home court advantage as they accounted for the Australian Centre of Excellence 101-92 in the SEABL Eastern Division.

The C of E is largely made up of the Australian Under 17 team that finished fifth at the recent FIBA Under 17 World Championships.

In other news from Australia former Breakers guard Rhys Carter has signed with Plymouth Raiders for the 2016-2017 British Basketball League season. The Raiders are coached by another former Breaker Daryl Corletto and had Duane Bailey on their books last season.

Double double for Chevannah Paalvast

Overall it was a good weekend for the New Zealand international players based in Australia.

Duane Bailey, obviously making progress from the calf tear he recently suffered, logged 25 minutes for Brisbane Spartans in his fifth game since joining the club at the conclusion of the Southland Sharks season.

The Spartans won a high scoring affair 112-101 against Ballarat Miners in a SEABL Eastern Division tie. Bailey scored 11 points (5/7FG) and added 4 rebounds as the Spartans consolidated second place with a 12-7 record.

Tall Fern Chevannah Paalvast is also based in Queensland playing for Townsville Flames in the Queensland Basketball League.

The Flames split a double-header road trip beating Gladstone Power 88-78 on Friday but then got blown away by Rockhampton Cyclones, 106-91, on Saturday.

The Flames are fourth on the ladder with a 10-4 record.

Ironically Paalvast was relatively quiet in the win on Friday (4pts, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) but close to her best against the Cyclones breezing to a double double of 23 points (10/16FG) and 10 rebounds.

Former Tall Fern Charmian Mellars (nee Purcell) is still getting it done for Gladstone. She produced a team high 20 points plus 11 rebounds.

Lisa Wallbutton was also in good scoring touch for Perth Redbacks as they hammered South West Slammers 100-59 in the Western Australian State League on Saturday.

Wallbutton accumulated 16 points (6/11FG) and gathered 9 rebounds as the Redbacks squeezed back into the top eight with the win.

Sunbury Jets were without Jess Bygate for their visit to Latrobe City but the Kennedy Kereama coached outfit just rolled out another win to remain top of the Big V First Division. The Jets beat Latrobe 78-53 and have now won 17 straight and are yet to be beaten in the current campaign.

Duane Bailey struggling with a calf injuy

Over in Australia the State Leagues are in full swing and a number of New Zealand internationals are featuring strongly.

Duane Bailey participated in something of a SKYCITY Breakers reunion on Saturday in Melbourne.

The Brisbane Spartans duo of Bailey and coach CJ Bruton visited the Melbourne Tigers in a SEABL Eastern Division tie. Melbourne have former Breakers Rhys Carter and Darryl Corletto in their lineup.

The former Tall Black, playing just his fourth game for the Spartans only played the first 85 seconds as his team disposed of the Tigers 87-69 to remain second on the ladder with an 11-7 record. Bailey, recovering from a calf tear (ouch!), left the court early, only started in order to log enough appearances to be eligible for play-off action later in the season.

For the record Corletto (9 points) and Carter (7 points) shot a collective 6 from 24 from the field as the Tigers continue to struggle.

Tall Fern Chevannah Paalvast is playing in the Queensland Basketball League for Townsville Flames.

The Flames had a successful double header road trip at the weekend beating Gold Coast Rollers 105-80 on Friday and South West Metro Pirates 92-72 on Saturday.

Paalvast was in sparkling form on Saturday scoring a game high 29 points (10/20FG) to add to 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.

On Friday she had scored 16 points as the Flames improved to 9-3 for the season.

Further south the Kennedy Kereama coached Sunbury Jets improved their record to 16-0 at the top of the Victorian Big V First Division.

Sunbury soared away from Chelsea Gulls winning 93-47 with Tall Fern forward Jess Bygate notching a double double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Over in the State League in Western Australia Lisa Wallbutton is suiting for Perth Redbacks. The Redbacks are currently seventh, just inside the top eight play-off bracket but slipped to a disappointing 88-79 loss to eleventh placed Lakeside Lightning on Saturday.

Wallbutton had 5points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 3steals and 2blocks as the Redbacks slip to a 9 win-9 loss record.

After a double header last weekend Toni Edmondson and her Perry Lakes Hawks side were without a fixture at the weekend. Edmonson is averaging 16 points per game for the Hawks who are sitting fourth on the SBL ladder with a 12-7 record.

Tall Ferns Back in Action

QBQ8NiEkQk6JuXfWDDptfQ.jpg

The Olympic Qualifying Tournament only ended ten days ago but a trio of players that were in action for the Tall Ferns in France suited for their club sides in Australia at the weekend.

Chevannah Paalvast showed good form for Townsville Flames in the Queensland Basketball League. The Kiwi guard scored 20 points for the Flames but they were doused 94-67 by Mackay Meteorettes (not sure about that name). Townsville were just ten down at three-quarter time but were dominated 28-5 in the final period as they slip to a 5-3 record.

The Perth based pair of Lisa Wallbutton and Toni Edmondson had contrasting fortunes. Edmondson put up an impressive stats line of 23 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals as Perry Lakes Hawks (12-6) cemented a place in the top four of the State League with a 91-57 mauling of Cockburn Cougars. The Hawks set up the win with a dominant 29-9 second quarter.

Lisa Wallbutton found points hard to come by making just one of ten shots from the field as the Perth Redbacks were bitten 70-55 by Willeton Tigers. Wallbutton only managed three points but she did top the Redbacks rebounding count with 10 boards.

Samara Gallaher withdrew from Tall Ferns consideration due to injury but she has made a comeback recently for Hume City Broncos in the Victorian Big V League.

On Saturday the Broncos (13/1) had a top of the table clash with Ringwood Hawks (14/2) and in a possible Grand final preview Hume came out on top 78-63. Gallaher didn’t score any points but did contribute 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in the win.

The Sunbury Jets have continued to dominate Division One of the Big V League. Whilst Kennedy Kereama was away on Tall Ferns duty assistant Lisa Townsend took up the coaching reins and she ensured the Jets unbeaten run was maintained.

Kereama was back on board on Sunday as the Jets soared away from Western Port winning 89-41 and now boast a 13-0 record. Tall Fern forward Jess Bygate followed contributed 12 points to Sunbury’s latest success.

Tall Black forward Duane Bailey has recently joined the CJ Bruton coached Brisbane Spartans. The Spartans sit second on the SEABL Eastern Conference table with a 10-6 record after defeating Dandenong Rangers 98-73 on Saturday.

Bailey, playing his second game for the Spartans, had 10 points (4/8FG) and 6 rebounds in 22 minutes of action.

Fotu’s Zaragoza win in bizarre circumstances

Isaac Fotu

On Sunday Rob Loe, Tom Abercrombie and Isaac Fotu were each involved in European fixtures for there respective clubs . For Fotu and Abercrombie it proved to be their last outing before linking up with the Tall Blacks.

Fotu’s Zaragoza club played its thirty fourth and final regular season game of the Spanish League season, finishing on a positive note by winning 73-72 in Bilbao in unlikely circumstances.

With time almost up Zaragoza’s Joan Sastre launched a desperate heave from inside his own half at the basket with his team two points down. As his shot reached it’s apex the full time hooter sounded, a fraction of a second later the ball entered the hoop via the backboard. Not only had Zaragoza snatched a one point win but they had also denied the hosts a play-off spot.

He will return to his club Zaragoza next season for the third term of his three-year contract but for now he heads back to Auckland for a few days before linking with the Tall Blacks.

Tom Abercrombie is also Auckland bound after he and his club Pinar Karsiyaka were eliminated in the Turkish league play-offs.

It was looking good for Karsiyaka after it won the opening game of the quarter-final series in Istanbul with a 74-67 victory against Galatasaray last Wednesday.

The victory appeared to have set Karsiyaka up for an upset win in the best of three series. Unfortunately they missed a golden opportunity to progress by losing at home 65-62 in game two fourty eight hours later.

Galatasaray won the deciding game on Sunday decisively. They took the opening period 22-17 going on to win every quarter to take the game 77-62 and the tie 2-1.

Tom Abercrombie scored double figures in the first two fixtures (11 points followed by 12) and ended with 7 points in the third and decisive game.

In Belgium Rob Loe is keeping the Kiwi flag flying in Europe but only just.

Following Limburg United’s 78-64 loss against Oostende on Sunday the best of five Scooore League semi- final series stands 2-1 in favour of Oostende.

Limburg took game two 89-83 after being thrashed 91-62 in the opening exchange.

Loe nailed 10 points, 4 rebounds and three blocks in game two after a more subdued 3 points and 3 rebounds in the first game. His contribution in game three was limited to 4 points and 3 rebounds after getting into foul trouble, pinged four times in just 12 minutes.

The fourth game is on Wednesday with a fifth, if required, scheduled for next Saturday.

Fotu has fond memories of his visits to Bilbao as it is the city where he came of age as an international player displaying outstanding form for the Tall Blacks at the 2014 FIBA World Cup averaging 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Jillian Harmon in fine form in Italy

In a week when our Tall Blacks players in Europe had rather quiet performances it was Tall Ferns forward Jillian Harmon that grabbed the headlines.

Harmon had plenty to celebrate as her Italian club Le Murra Lucca progressed to a second Championship Final, in their sixth year in the top flight SerieA Italian League, where they will take on arch rivals Familia Schio.

Amazingly the second game of Lucca’s semi-final series followed the same pattern as the first by going to overtime.

As in game one the outcome was the same with Le Murra Lucca prevailing 68-64 against Venezia after it was locked 58 points apiece at the end of regular time.

There were no more than two points separating the teams at the end of each quarter. Harmon nailed 17 points, including a game clinching free throw with 16 seconds left in normal time, to give Lucca a match winning four points buffer.

All the other overseas based Tall Ferns were back in the country at the weekend trying out for the national team.

The trials were held on Saturday and Sunday with the selected players remaining in camp on Monday and Tuesday before departing for a tour of China and Europe on Wednesday.

 Europe –Men

On Sunday Zaragoza visited Fuenlabrada in Spanish League action. Fuenlabrada sitting 7th on the Liga Endesa ladder and with more to play for than the mid table placed Zaragoza underlined their superiority with an emphatic 105-85 win.

Zaragoza led 21-17 at the end of the first quarter but were overpowered in the remainder of the game. Isaac Fotu recorded 4 rebounds a steal and a block but managed just 3 points (1/4FG) for the visitors.

In Belgium Limburg United went down 82-75 against Telenet Oostende in their final regular season game of the Scooore League. Just 4 points, 2 rebounds and an assist for Rob Loe in that game.

The Tall Blacks centre and his Limburg colleagues face a hectic week as they take on Port of Antwerp Giants in a best of three quarter final series. The players face three games in five days beginning on Tuesday.

Pinar Karsiyaka are having a busy road trip in the final few days of the Turkish Spor Toto Basketbol Ligi regular season.

On Thursday they travelled to Buyukcekmece and came away with an exciting 100-99 win, Tom Abercrombie contributing 11 points, 5 rebound and 2 assists.

They then faced recently crowned Eurocup winners Fenerbache and came off second best losing 74-67, with Abercrombie managing just three points.

With Fenerbache looking likely runners-up and Karsiyaka currently seventh on the ladder the two teams are on course for a best of three quarter-final clash beginning later this week.

In other news from Turkey twelve of the 16 clubs that play in Turkey’s top flight Spor Toto Basketbol Ligi on Friday confirmed their registration for the Basketball Champions League.

Pinar Karsiyaka, Banvit Basketbol, Besiktas Sompo Japan, Akin Corap Yesilgiresun BLD, Demir Insaat Buyukcekmece, Istanbul BBSK, Muratbey Usak Sportif, Ronesans Ted Ankara Kolejliler, Royal Hali Gaziantep, Torku Konya Spor, Trabzonspor Medicalpark and Turk Telekom have all registered to be a part of the innovative 50-50 joint partnership between FIBA and 10 top European leagues that will tip off its inaugural season in September 2016.

Tall Ferns in good form ahead of international season

Jillian Harmon

A number of our international players are in good form ahead of the naming of the Tall Ferns squad next week. The squad to tour China and Europe ahead of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in France will be announced on Monda

The performance of the week came from Tall Ferns forward Jillian Harmon. She scored 28 points as Le Murra Lucca opened their best of three Italian Championship semi-final series with a win. It was tough going for Lucca who were taken to overtime by Venezia before winning 77-73. Harmon played all 45 minutes for the regular season champions and added 5 rebounds to her points haul as Lucca protected their home court.

Game two is set down for Wednesday in Venice and game three if required back in Lucca on Saturday.

Australia

Tall Ferns Head coach Kennedy Kereama, along with the majority of the Australian based Kiwi internationals, will be heading to Auckland later this week in preparation for the Tall Ferns trial. Before that they had some club commitments to fulfill.

In Big V League Division 1 action it was first versus second as Sunbury Jets entertained Western Port. The Jets, coached by Kereama, held a commanding 58-42 three-quarter time advantage before easing to a 71-60 victory to improve to 7-0 on the season and consolidate top spot.

It wasn’t a game to remember for Jess Bygate; the former Nelson forward scored just 4 points for the Jets as she fouled out in less than thirteen minutes.

It was round one in the Queensland Basketball League and Chevannah Paalvast is suiting up for Townsville Flames for this season. She contributed 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists as Townsville defeated Cairns 79-73.

In Western Australia Toni Edmondson is in good form ahead of the Tall Ferns campaign. Edmondson followed up her 14pts/12rebs display last week with 21 points for Perry Lakes Hawks against East Perth Eagles on Friday in the State Basketball League. The Hawks won 80-44 against the lowly Eagles and improved to 6-1 for the season.

It wasn’t such good news for Lisa Wallbutton and the Perth Redbacks as they were beaten 75-71 in a tight encounter by Cockburn Cougars. Wallbutton came up with an impressive 14 points and 11 rebounds but the Redbacks gave up a five points three-quarter time advantage to slip to 3-3 for the campaign.

US College

Josie Stockill, about to graduate from Colgate University, was this week recognised as Colgate’s female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

A neuroscience major, Stockill was one of five named to the Women’s Basketball Academic All-Patriot League Team for her efforts in the classroom during the 2015-16 season. The Napier product was a three-time member of both the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and Colgate’s Raider Academic Honor Roll. On the court, Stockill ended her collegiate career as the programme’s career leader for blocked shots in a game (13), season (105) and career (241).

Edmondson and Wallbutton head overseas performances

315421-toni-edmondson

A double double for Toni Edmondson

The performances of the week amongst our international basketball players overseas belonged to the two Western Australian based Tall Ferns, Toni Edmondson and Lisa Wallbutton.

Playing for Perry Lakes Hawks in the Western Australian State League Edmondson produced 14 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots as the Hawks beat Mandurah Magic 66-56 on Friday.

It was a tight first half but Perry Lakes, now 5-1 for the season, broke the game open in the third quarter with 21 points to 9 to set up the win despite a strong fourth period from Mandurah.

Perth Redbacks had lost two games on the trot but bounced back on ANZAC Day to defeat East Perth Eagles 76-59. Lisa Wallbutton also recorded a double double notching 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Redbacks improve to 4-2 on the season holding fifth spot on the State League ladder a couple of places behind the 5-1 Hawks.

In Melbourne Tall Ferns Head coach Kennedy Kereama’s Sunbury Jets moved to 6-0 for the season in Big V League Division one action.

On Saturday the Jets were far too strong for Hawthorn cruising to a 67-38 one-sided win

Tall Ferns forward Jess Bygate had 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist in 16 minutes for the Jets as she eases back towards full fitness.

Europe – Women

After winning the Serie A regular season title a couple of weeks ago Le Murra Lucca opened their play-off campaign with a comfortable 85-62 quarter final victory over Napoli on Wednesday.

Played at the Pala Tagliate Lucca opened an 8-0 lead and were never threatened. Jillian Harmon (15 points) was one of five Lucca players in double figures.

Game two was played in Naples on Sunday. That was a lower scoring affair, although the result was the same, Lucca winning 68-47 with Harmon contributing 8 points as they progress to a semi-final meeting with Venezia next weekend.

Europe –Men

Zaragoza moved to equal 14th on the Liga Endesa table after defeating bottom placed Gipuzkoa in San Sebastian 84-75 on Sunday. Isaac Fotu had a relatively quiet game scoring 8 points (converting four from eight shots) and also securing a couple of rebounds.

Next week Zaragoza will entertain Fotu’s former club Manresa, both sides holding an identical 10-19 record for the season.

Rob Loe only played 18 minutes for Limburg United in the Belgium Scooore League fixture with Proximus Spirou on Sunday but it was long enough for him to grab a game high 7 rebounds. The former Westlake Boys centre also produced 4 points and an assist, steal and block as Limburg lost 90-76.

United are now tied for fourth place with Port of Antwerp Giants in the Scooore League. The two teams meet next week at Limburg with just a couple of rounds remaining before play-off action. With the current standing unlikely to alter in the last two rounds the game is a likely precursor to a quarter-final match up between the two teams.

Tom Abercrombie’s club Pinar Karsiyaka had its scheduled game against Galatasaray deferred for a couple of weeks. Galatasaray are in the midst of a two game Eurocup Final series against Strasbourg trailing 66-62 from the first leg. Game two is in Istanbul on Wednesday.S

Bailey heading home, Cocks staying put

DB01

Duane Bailey should be back in Sharks colours this week

The major news involving Kiwi international players overseas this week is that Duane Bailey is about to depart London bound for Invercargill and Tall Ferns star Micaela Cocks has re signed for Townsville Fire for a further two seasons.

Duane Bailey came close to a triple double for Plymouth Raiders against Glasgow Rocks on Wednesday but it was virtually his last offering in the British Basketball League season.

At the beginning of the week the Raiders shared eighth spot with Leeds Force and had to match the Force record in the final two games of the regular season to make the play-offs. Leeds had the far easier schedule playing the two bottom placed teams, Manchester and Surrey.

However Plymouth were defeated 87-77 on the road at Glasgow Rocks on Wednesday where Bailey had an impressive stat line of 12pts, 10rebs, 7assists, 2 blocks and a steal.

The loss opened the door for Leeds who duly won their final two games and condemned Plymouth to ninth spot despite the Raiders winning their last game, 84-76, at home to Sheffield on Sunday (Bailey, 8 points and 5 rebounds).

Bailey has confirmed that he expects to be back in time to play for Southland Sharks in the New Zealand NBL this week. The Sharks have a tough three games in five days road trip beginning with a visit to Nelson on Thursday. It may be more realistic for Bailey to target the game in Taranaki on Friday. Southland round out the tri-trip against the Saints in Wellington next Monday.

Plymouth finished with a 13-20 record, one win and one place outside the play-off picture.

In other news from Europe Zaragoza was only 6 points behind visitors Gran Canaria at three-quarter time on Sunday but could make little headway in reducing the lead eventually falling 96-87. Isaac Fotu had an efficient shooting night on his way to 14 points and 4 rebounds. The former Rangitoto College standout converted both of his free throws as well as 6 from 9 field goals.

Zaragoza remain 15th on the Liga Endesa table with a 9-19 record but must beat bottom placed Gipuzkoa in San Sebastian next week to avoid becoming embroiled in the relegation battle.

Tom Abercrombie’s club Pinar Karsiyaka had a comfortable 82-60 win against Torku Konyaspor in Turkish League action on Saturday. Abercrombie had 11 points, 2 rebounds a pair of steals and an assist as Karsiyaka consolidate sixth place in the TBL with a 15-11 record. Four rounds remain in the regular season.

Limburg United had a bye in the Belgium League this week giving Rob Loe and his team a weekend off.

Micaela Cocks staying with Townsville Fire

In a week when the Tall Ferns 23 player training squad was named it was also announced that Micaela Cocks has signed on for a further two years with Townsville Fire.

The WNBL Grand Final MVP has enjoyed tremendous success at Townsville, the Fire not missing the play-offs in her five years with the club. Cocks has made 129 appearances for the defending champions and is looking forward to further triumphs with the Queensland club.

“I have really enjoyed contributing to the success of the Fire over the past five years and I could think of nothing better than winning a third championship for Townsville and all of our wonderful fans,” Cocks said.

“Townsville is my home away from home now and I’m looking forward to the season ahead. It should be another great year.”

Before that Cocks has the Tall Ferns Olympic Qualifying Tournament to look forward to.

On the court a number of the Tall Ferns training squad were in action at the weekend.

In Western Australia it wasn’t a weekend to remember for the two Tall Ferns playing in the State League.

The Perth Redbacks (3-2) suffered a second successive loss going down 76-68 to Stirling Senators. Lisa Wallbutton finished with a massive 15 rebounds to go with 9 points and a brace of assists. Other than free throws (5 out of 8) it wasn’t the best of shooting nights for the former Harbour forward connecting with just 2 from 13 attempts from the field.

Toni Edmondson also had a shooting night to forget managing a paltry 3 from 15 attempts. The swingman finished with 6 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists as Perry Lakes (4-1) lost its first game of the season going down in a tight one, 68-67 to Joondalup Wolves.

In Melbourne Tall Ferns Head coach Kennedy Kereama’s Sunbury Jets embarrassed two opponents in Big V League Division one action.

The Jets accounted for Weribee Devils 108-45 on Saturday and Craigieburn Eagles 95-40 on Sunday.

The victories were achieved without much contribution from Jess Bygate who is still nursing an injury.

Europe – Women

Neither Jillian Harmon or Erin Rooney were in action for their respective clubs at the weekend.

Harmon’s Le Murra Lucca await the outcome of the Torino versus Napoli three game series ahead of their Italian League quarter-final tie on April 21.

Rooney’s club Calais had a bye in the French League although it is unclear when the guard will return to action having not played since mid February due to injury.

Junior Tall Ferns swept by China

012_4871

China too strong for the Junior Tall Ferns again

Both the Junior Tall Ferns and China were coming off defeats when they met in Weng’an on Tuesday in the penultimate fixture of the Ferns 12 game tour of China.

Unfortunately the Ferns slipped to a third straight loss to the Chinese FIBA Under 17 World Championships bound team 75-67.

Once again the JTF’s were well in the hunt with 10 minutes to play trailing 55-52 but couldn’t find enough scoring punch to snatch a win.

Report from Brent Matehaere (Junior Tall Ferns head coach).

Unfortunately, there will be no repeat of two years ago when the JTF’s beat China; but the games have all been all within 10 points. At no time have we been out of the contests, which is in marked contrast to the previous tours.

The game started out as a low scoring affair with the score at 3 – 2 after 5 minutes of play. China were the first to get their offense going before the JTF’s finally got into their stride finishing the quarter with a flourish ahead 15-14.  The second quarter will be one the JTF’s will not wish to remember as China went on a 16 -2 run in the last 3 minutes of the period.

It was a gap the JTF’s would close to within 3 by the end of the third quarter.  In the fourth quarter baskets were traded throughout but it was the locals who got the bounce of the ball down the stretch and the JTF’s were unable to pull this one out of the bag.

I have been really happy with the focus and heart that these players have shown on this tour.  With only one game remaining we take on the Polish team who beat the Chinese on Monday and ran the USA select team close tonight losing 80-71. Polish coach Rafal Czyszpak will be looking to have his team ready to take us on in the last game in China.

Top scorers were Tiarna Clarke with 16 points (7/13FG) and Nicole Ruske, 13 points (4/7FG) who came off the bench with another strong performance. Ruske and Zara Jillings led the rebounding count with six each.

The game aside, the memories and experiences that the girls have been been exposed to will remain with them forever.  Nothing can quite prepare you for a trip to China.  The amazing hospitality that is shown, the screaming school students as they try to gain your attention during school visits, the food, the interesting aromas that waft up when you least expect it, the amazing facilities we have the chance to play in and the people that fill them each night. How can the girls comprehend that in a town the size of Christchurch we have the local Police as an escort and officers on every intersection to stop traffic for the buses.

It will be tough when they are home to remember to take their plates from the table, make their beds in the morning, clean up their rooms and find their transport from place to place.  I am sure however they are really looking forward to home cooked meals, the comfort of their own beds and a nice crisp autumn morning with the sun warming their faces.

Final Score;

China 75

JTF’s 67 – Clarke 16pts/2rebs/2assists,  Ruske 13/3/3/1stl, Jillings 8/6/1/1stl, Whittaker 6/2/3stls, Diakaby 6/4, Leger-Walker 6/6, Dunn 5, Finnigan 3/1/1stl, Hirwani 2/1/1/2stls, Penese 2/4, Baudry 0/1/1stl

American basketball correspondent Chris Denker has reported that the USA Select and Junior Tall Ferns have interacted really well during the four nations tour of China on http://netscoutsbasketball.com

Denker comments, “the teams have bonded very well with one another off the court throughout the tour and hope to continue those relationships well beyond the tour.”
