Unknown

Quinn Clinton amassed 34 points, 16 rebounds and 9 assists as he led Canterbury to the Under 19 National title on Tuesday. On the eve of the Tall Ferns Selection Camp taking place in Auckland during the coming week a number of those selected appear in good form judging by their performances in the various Australian State Leagues at the weekend.

Paalvast scored 16 points, including 4 from 6 threes, whilst Cocks landed 8 points and a team high 5 assists.

Out west Perry Lakes Hawks are also unbeaten in the WA State League. Boasting a 14-0 record they were way too strong for East Perth Eagles winning 80-51. Toni Farnworth (nee Edmondson) came up with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the Hawks.

Entering the weekend Sunbury Jets, coached by Tall Ferns coach Kennedy Kereama, boasted an 11-0 record in the Big V League. That record took a dent on Sunday when the Jets went down to Hume City Broncos losing 70-67.

Team-pic_-lacey-lowdown

Saturday was a good day for Canterbury Women’s basketball.

Not only did the Canterbury Women’s  team win both games at Under 19 Nationals but the Wildcats registered a win also.

A couple of weeks ago the Wildcats were upset by Harbour Breeze but on Saturday they had no trouble disposing of Taranaki Thunder.

This week marked the start of Divisional play in the McDonald’s Whelan Trophy, with nine teams competing in Division I, and six in Division II.

The Avonside Lady Eagles had their first win of the season against Hillmorton High. The game was locked at 23-23 just before halftime before Avonside went on a 14-0 run. The Lady Eagles just held on as Hillmorton closed the gap to two points (54-52) near the end of the game, before Molly Cockburn scored the final four points to ice the game for Avonside 58-52.

Bella Digby led the winners with 17p, and Molly Cockburn had 14p. Hillmorton’s Michelle Scott had 19p, and Holly Iafeta had 10p.

In Division I, Middleton Grange continued their strong play, accounting for Ashburton College 81-58 in a game that gradually got further and further away for the visitors, who were only down 38-27 just before half time. Canterbury Wildcat Lauryn Hippolite led all scorers with 23p, and fellow Wildcat Aimee Book had 19p. Ashburton’s Sophie Adams had 19p and Samantha Arnold 10p in the loss.

Hillmorton doubled up Hornby High School 124-62, with a 22-0 run in the middle of the game being too much for Hornby to overcome.
