Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam round one action

The Shea Ili match up with Kevin Braswell was interesting

The Shea Ili match up with Kevin Braswell was interesting

The 2015 Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam began at Atlas Place, headquarters of the New Zealand Breakers, on Saturday. The competition features four men’s teams and four women’s teams and takes place every Saturday through until December 20.

In the Men’s competition The Birdmen opened proceedings against Breakers Development with a couple of veteran v apprentice matchups catching the eye. Casey Frank enjoyed (I think) his battle with Tai Wynyard and the tussle between former Southland Sharks teammates Kevin Braswell and Shea Ili was a delight to behold.

The Birdmen will be without Marco Alexander for the majority of this season as the shooting guard has suffered a broken bone in the foot.

Jordan Ngatai with a tip in after strong work from Wynyard opened the scoring for the Breakers, Braswell replying for the Birdmen. The first quarter highlight was a Wynyard dunk from an Ili lob pass as the Breakers held a slender 25-21 lead.

Quarter two belonged to Brook Ruscoe the shooting guard helping himself to 18 points in the period. A four-point play is something of a rarity but Ruscoe managed it twice in 5 minutes as he helped the Birdmen to a 54-48 advantage.

The experienced Ngatai and Ili stood up in the third period and aided by Sam Waardenburg the Breakers regained the initiative to take an 81-77 lead into the final break.

The Breakers led by 10 points with 4 minutes remaining but a three fCasey Frank plus free throws from the veteran centre and guard Chris Duthie threatened a comeback. However the young Breakers squad held their nerve on the back of athletic plays from Ili, Wynyard and Brayden Inger to record a first up win in a highly entertaining game.

Final score;

Breakers Development 111 – Wynyard 29p/17r, Ili 23, Waardenburg 22, Ngatai 12, Dan Fotu 11

Birdmen 100 – Ruscoe 24, Braswell 18, Frank 17, Duthie 13, Robson Tavita 12, Isaac Davidson 10

The second game was less competitive as the Mai FM6ers, minus the services of Hayden Allen and Tall Black Duane Bailey, were out scored 126-99 by 68 Nelson Street (formerly Youthtown).

Houston O’Riley scored 7 quick points and Nick Barrow added a couple of put backs to give Mai an early 11-2 lead but that advantage was hauled in by quarter time. 68NS led by Dillon Boucher, Lindsay Tait and Ana Haku quickened the pace in the second quarter and their transition game was too much for the 6ers who trailed 68-44 at half time.

O’Riley began the second half in the same fashion as the first with a long three and when Anthony Jones hit back to back triples, a revival was on the cards. This was quickly snuffed out by the two Matt’s, Freeman and Lacey, and aided by threes from Daniel Green, 68NS held an unassailable 94-76 threequarter time advantage.

Final score;

68 Nelson St 126 – Tait 26, Haku 24, Green 24, Freeman 20, Lacey 14.

MaiFM 6ers 99 – O’Riley 31, Barrow 27, Jones 19, Adam Dunstan 12

Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam – Women’s comp underway

34 points from Jordan Hunter

34 points from Jordan Hunter

The inaugural Mexicali Fresh Summer Jam Women’s competition began with The Suns rising over The Sparks 71-42.

Early exchanges were even before Breeze Leonard, with a buzzer beater, gave Suns a 14-8 quarter time lead.

Leonard along with 10 points apiece from Bronwyn Kjestrup and Tauranga City forward Kelcy Ballantyne gave the Suns a 34-18 half time lead. Rangitoto College standout Rebecca Hughes (7 points) was the best of the Sparks scorers.

Former Tall Fern Jody Cameron, still possessing great awareness and passing skills, was prominent in the second half as she set up numerous scoring opportunities for forwards Ballantyne and Kjestrup to stretch the Suns lead to 55-34 by three quarter time.

The tireless Stevie Theyers and Hailey Purcell battled away for the Sparks but they were unable to do much to cloud the Suns winning glow.

Final score;

Suns 71 – Leonard 18, Kjestrup 16, Ballantyne 10, Tiarna Clarke 10

Sparks 42 – Hughes 12, Purcell 9, Theyers 9

Game two was a much closer affair as team Sky edged the Storm 84-79 in a high scoring game despite 34 points from Tall Ferns point guard Jordan Hunter.

Sky began the game with a 7-0 run but that lead was reduced to 4 points by quarter time, 24-20, with Storm seizing the initiative in the second period to lead 41-39 at half time – Millie Nathan and Milomilo Nanai finding holes in the opposition defence with regularity.

Fortunes fluctuated in the second half as Westlake High School guard Zara Jillings and Hunter went toe for toe on the perimeter and Deena Franklin, Annabelle Jenkins and Katelin Noyer battled for inside supremacy with the ‘MN’s’ Nanai and Nathan.

The scores were locked 69 apiece with 6 minutes remaining before team Sky opted for the perimeter game to achieve success. Jess Nicholson, Georgia Henare and Zara Jillings (4/7 3PG) all made triples for team Sky, just enough to hold off the efforts of the impressive Hunter (7/14 3PG).

Final score;

Sky 84 – Jillings 20, Franklin 19, Jenkins 16, Henare 10

Storm 79 – Jordan 34, Nathan 16, Nanai 16, Hannah Turton 8

Webster and Wesley work wonders

corey-webster-photosport

It is not often that two players enjoy a personal best scoring night but that is what happened during the Breakers 90-67 victory against Cairns Taipans at Vector Arena on Wednesday night.

Tai Wesley scored 26 points, his previous best being 23 points in Sydney on Boxing Day last year.

Corey Webster scored 35 points easily surpassing his previous best of 27 points against Perth late last season.

The 35 points haul was the highest points haul in an NBL game at Vector Arena and the highest anywhere by a Breakers player since Kirk Penney’s memorable 38 points outburst in the 2011 semi-final win in Perth against the Wildcats.

The victory against Cairns was the 132nd win enjoyed by Tom Abercrombie in a Breakers singlet. Only Mika Vukona has won more games.

Breakers all time ‘winningest’ players:

Wins Games % W’s
Mika Vukona 155 272 57.0
Tom Abercrombie 132 198 66.7
Dillon Boucher 131 220 59.5
CJ Bruton 120 179 67.0
Paul Henare 113 250 45.2
Alex Pledger 112 154 72.7
Corey Webster 92 130 70.8
Cedric Jackson 78 103 75.7
Kirk Penney 68 110 61.8
Daryl Corletto 63 92 68.5

News for students wanting US College Scholarships

A prominent United States basketball scout will be returning to New Zealand next week on a talent drive offering young basketball players exposure to colleges in the U.S.

Shane Howard, Chief Executive of Custom College Recruiting, specialises in recruiting athletes outside the U.S. Last year Custom College Recruiting partnered with Basketball New Zealand to help 13 New Zealand players receive basketball scholarships at U.S. colleges. Another 14 are in talks about offers for 2016. Mr Howard says that number should more than double in the coming year or two, as New Zealand produce basketball athletes that fit well with U.S. colleges across all basketball divisions.

“New Zealand fosters smart and talented basketballers. The sport is increasing in popularity there and Kiwis are starting to realise that basketball offers great opportunities for them in the U.S. Our business is helping those players to get noticed by college coaches, which often leads to scholarships at colleges that suit their ability,” says Mr Howard.

During the free seminars, Mr Howard will cover the traps that people can fall into when chasing scholarships. He says players need to be careful when they enlist private operators to help, particularly if there are guarantees or promises that might seem too good to be true.

“There’s lots of private academies out there that charge the earth for a trip to play in scouting tournaments in the States. Many people don’t realise that those tournaments can have hundreds of teams participating, and they can end up being a small fish in an ocean of players. Also college coaches will most likely have no idea that the player is there, or who that player is, so people can depart U.S. shores feeling disappointed and dismissed.

“There are never any guarantees with the college recruiting process, but if players and their families are armed with the right information, they can navigate the process well. We will give them the facts about what opportunities are available in the U.S. and the truth about what they should stay away from.”

Basketball New Zealand Chief Executive Iain Potter says U.S. based colleges are increasingly interested in New Zealand talent, and he agrees that players and their families need to be careful about how they chase that dream. Mr Potter says it is for this reason Basketball New Zealand invited Custom College Recruiting to New Zealand.

“We endorse Custom College Recruiting because they are upfront about what people should expect and they know what U.S. colleges are looking for.

“Custom College Recruiting are experts in assessing the talent of our players, and they know the academic requirements that players need to meet. They can then reach out through their extensive contacts to approach colleges that are the right fit for those young basketballers. Best of all, it doesn’t require players and their families to invest heavily. Custom College Recruiting negate other privateers that can run-up expectations by over-promising, but then under-delivering,” says Mr Potter.

Custom College Recruiting has a network of over 7000 college coaches from every level throughout the U.S. and Canada. They’ve helped aspiring college athletes from about 30 different countries connect with these coaches and, in the process, helped provide almost $40 million in college scholarship opportunities.

Useful contribution off the bench from Chevannah Paalvast

For the second week running Townsville Fire posted a century of points in the Australian WNBL this week demolishing Adelaide Lightning 101-41. The Lightning were outplayed in all facets of the game, they trailed 57-24 at half time and never looked like threatening the defending champions. The Lightning’s cause was not helped when Jess Bygate fouled out in 13 minutes with just two rebounds to her name. Continue reading

The good news was that Corey Webster was back the not such good news was that the Breakers turnovers trouble continues. The headline act amongst the Tall Blacks overseas this week has to belong to Kirk Penney. The former Breakers shooting guard, who still holds the club’s all time scoring record, scored 36 points for the Illawarra Hawks as they beat the defending champions 96-75 on Wednesday. He shot a perfect 9 from 9 free throws to back up 10 from 24 from the field (7/12 3PG), repeatedly knocking down open shots, to sink his former team. Continue reading
