News from Auckland Schools Premier Basketball

Onehunga High School came close to upsetting Westlake Boys High School in the Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Basketball competition last week but on Friday they were always in arrears against Rangitoto College.

The scores were even mid way through the first quarter but when Rangitoto coach Kenny Stone has the luxury of introducing Tai Wynyard, Dan Fotu and Isaac Davidson off the bench you get the impression most teams are going to buckle against such quality.

Onehunga trailed 24-17 at the end of quarter one but the gap had widened to 56-31 at half time. Sam Waardenburg had 11 points at the break and Semisi Tu’ufetua, demonstrating some nice touches close to the basket had 12 points for OHS.

The second half threatened to be one-way traffic but all credit to Onehunga, with a two man bench, Lesae Coe and Tu’ufetua in particular kept the host defenders busy. Zack Te Puni enjoyed some extended court time for Rosmini and responded with a double double of a dozen points and rebounds.

Final Score:

Rangitoto College 90 – Waardenburg 19p/11r, Wynyard 14p/10r, Te Puni 12p/12r, Davidson 8p/6a

Onehunga High School 62 – Coe 20p, Tu’ufetua 16p Marvin Brown 8p

In the earlier game the Rangi girls proved too strong at home for Mount Albert Grammar winning 57-42.

It was fairly even at the main break with Rangitoto just ahead 26-23, Tabatha Jenkins (7pts) displaying a willingness to fight for the rebounds and loose ball.

Gracie Hasler-Ewin was forced to the bench with a fourth foul in the third period but a 16-8 run in the stanza extended the Rangi lead to a comfortable 42-31 with 10 minutes remaining – Casey McFadden slotted in 6 points in the period.

Khyannon Poto kept the scoreline respectable for MAGS, Ivana Botica sealing the deal for Rangitoto with a late flourish, including a step back three, to cap a solid win for the hosts.

Final score:

Rangitoto College 57 – Tessa Gush 14p, Jenkins 9p, Hasler-Ewin 8p, McFadden 8p

MAGS 42 – Poto 15p, Ang Lousi 10p, Trinity Paeu 8p

Elsewhere there were wins for Rosmini at St Kentigern in the Boys competition and a controversial win for Westlake in the Girls League.

It appears Auckland Girls Grammar Coach John Subritzky got ejected from the game after multiple technical fouls with his team 17 points ahead of Westlake.  His behavior resulted in the game being awarded to Westlake 20-0.
