Top of the Blocks

New Zealand Breakers centre Ekene Ibekwe has had his impressive shot blocking record improved further.

It has recently come to light that back in round 5 of the NBL season there was a major discrepancy in an element of the game stats from the Cairns Taipans versus Sky City Breakers game.

NBL Operations Manager Guy Neville has informed Lacey Lowdown that the Breakers coaching staff asked for a review of the game played on November 7th.

The official box score from the game credits Ekene Ibekwe with 2 blocked shots and still shows as such on the NBL website. The Breakers appealed this stat, the result of which is that Ibekwe’s number of blocks was adjusted to 7! That’s right from 2 to 7.

Missing 5 blocked shots for one player suggests incompetence or the need for new specs on the part of the stats crew at the game.

Either way it means that Ibekwe’s effort sets a new Breakers record for the most blocks effected by a player in a single game.

It also moves his tally for the season to 46, level with Alex Pledger for the most blocks by a Breakers player in a single season.

UnknownThat record could fall solely into the hands of the Nigerian international in the game against Perth Wildcats on Sunday night.
